Nov. 22: Hot Doe on the Ridge - Shooter Buck in the Chase | Bowhunting Whitetails w/ Bill Winke

  • On Wednesday morning I headed back to the same stand where I shot the buck on November 9 and almost had a repeat performance. There was a hot doe fawn that pulled every buck in the area (eight bucks in the chase line). I also talk about an alternate strategy for approaching morning stands when it is dead still out. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. We hope you are enjoying this great holiday.

      Great strategy going in. Better than the alternative earlier. That's a big, smart doe. Probably smarter than all the bucks. Bottom of the bell curve is a best case scenario. I wonder where the bucks ended up?😮

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci +2

      We wondered that too Joseph. I am guessing eventually that doe fawn got tired out and one of the bucks fought off the others for breeding rights. There was only one mature buck in the chase (the one I wanted to shoot) so maybe he ended up with her. I just wish that last run through had been about 30 to 40 yards closer to the stand. Would be have been a much better ending for me! Good luck.

      Man, they were on her. We weren't able to show the first time we saw her. She ran past the stand on the same lane those first couple bucks came by on - at a dead run. No time to even get the camera on her. I wish she had come back that way because we likely would have gotten that 10 pointer. The chase was about 40 yards too far away. Have a great day.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Agreed. I remember some very frustrating trips to my stands in the dark spooking tons of deer. Then out of desperation I decided to wait until I could see. That really worked for me. I think it is a combination of things (more day winds, more animal movement, being able to see, the deer are moving more, etc.) All adds up to them not noticing my passing. Good luck.

    Bill, could you cover what you do for scent control as far as washing your clothes, air dry vs dryer sheet, do u use bins vs scent free bag or both, just leave them in their natural or add acorns or scent wafers, etc. looks like not scent loc or scent blocker layers. Curious what your routine is?
    Thx,
    Matt

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Matt, I don't do much now because it is nearly impossible to be scent free with two guys and all gear we have to carry to the tree to film. When I hunted by myself I could beat a lot of the deer wearing a scent containing suit I work on with Ev Tarrell at Cabela's (back then). Ev is the guy who owns the Code of Silence line now. We have talked about making another suit. I could write a book about what I have learned about scent control in the process of designing that thing, but these comment sections aren't long enough. I will produce an off-season episode about it this spring. I know how to beat all the deer all the time, but you have to go to very great extremes. I did it one whole season, never had a deer raise its nose at me even when my wind floaters hit them in the face. It can be done, but not using conventional methods (in my experience). Keeping really clean will allow you to beat some of the deer some of the time, but not a lot better than that. Still worth doing, but not 100% effective. Sometime I will go over what I did and what I learned. I think you will get a kick out of it. Good luck.

    Bill, I’m always so worried about intruding on the deer that I think I’m to cautious. I’ve seen in some of your other videos you walk in after shooting light. Now riding atv in to get the deer and letting the dogs roam. What are your thoughts on this or maybe do an episode after soon on this subject

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci +2

      You can run them out with the 4 wheeler and they forgive that much faster than getting caught walking through. Also, I don't plan to hunt back there anymore this year as I don't want to burn it out. The rest of the season will be on the food plots. Almost got him, so it was worth the try. Also, it is important to note that the dogs and the 4 wheeler have been back in there at least 10 times during the summer and into September. So, it is not a huge deal for the deer to hear us or see us coming through. Again, they will run off, but they forgive that very quickly. Good luck.

    Bill how do you think leaving gut piles affects the other deer? I have a 100 acre parcel in a heavily hunted area. I try to gut the doe I shoot back at the barn instead of leaving them near a bedding area. Typically coyotes clean them up within a couple days so maybe that is unnecasary? What do you think?

  • @takurghar1621
    @takurghar1621 Před 9 měsíci

    Good footage of the chase and that doe seemed nice and fat. Should be good eating. Any thoughts on what two rubs close together like that tells a person? Just that the buck(s) frequent the area?

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks. I think rubs are only useful shortly after they are made. Rubs are usually not visited often Ike scrapes are. They can be a great indicator of where to hunt in early October but not as useful after that.

    New and still learning. Are you not concerned about the dog scent all up in the bedding area? I have tried really hard at keeping my dogs away from my hunting area. Interested on your take there.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci

      Deer aren't really afraid of the dogs. I am running the deer out myself with the 4 wheeler so the only exposure the deer get to the dogs is ground scent. I am sure that is not a big deal to them. As long as dogs don't chase the deer the deer don't pay them a ton of attention. In southern Iowa our dogs were free range. They roamed about a 10 to 20 acre area near our house. One of my best stands was in that area. I believe as long as the dogs aren't in there often and aren't chasing deer it is not overly damaging.

      Good solution. My spot was about 1/4 mile up through the draw, all uphill. In my current shape (or lack thereof), I would have made it about 100 yards! I have a friend in Kansas who hunts little creeks and he does what you found. He runs to the tree making all kinds of noise and then quickly gets up into it because if there is a buck nearby he says it will come and check it out right away.

      I’ve done that already ,a few years ago. I think it does work. A guy I hunted with said he likes to try to sound like a squirrel on his way in . A few quick short steps followed by a short silence. I think we’re kinda heavy to actually replicate a squirrel but maybe the “ rhythm “ could fool a deer on the periphery of your zone. Who knows?

    Would field dressing it where the doe was found ruin the area?

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Před 9 měsíci

      I have not ever seen that. Many times I have hunted a stand where I gutted a doe the day before and the activity was still very good.

      We have county quotas so as long as the quota has not been met you can keep buying doe tags.

      You are right. That would have made it much easier. In the end, what worked best for us was me pulling the handle and Carsen pulling on one of her front legs. We made good time when we switched to that method. Didn't show it because we were too busy pulling! Have a great day and thanks for the comment.

      He took out her vitals and was in open timber with camera footage to mark her leaving. Even if he had no blood trail at all that deer isn't going to take 3 minutes to find.
