  • More: cameralabs.com/reviews/Olympus... - here's a preview video I filmed about the new Olympus flagship camera, the OMD EM1. This sits above the EM5 in the range and is the official successor to the E5 DSLR, although it is a mirrorless camera based on the Micro Four Thirds standard. In the video I'll go over all the new features, comparing it to the existing OMD EM5. This video is part of an in-depth hands-on preview at cameralabs which you can read at the link at the start of this text. As I get to test a final production sample, I'll update this page with results, before turning it into my final review around October 2013. I filmed this video with a Panasonic G3 and 25mm f1.4 and recorded the audio with a Zoom H2n.

Got the GX1 based on your input and love it but supsect GX7 IQ much better and love the 9 Fn buttons, IS in body and tilt-able viewfinder, 8000 sec shutter etc. Find the new EM1 a bit to large

    Hi Angie, sorry I didn't reply to your earlier message about this. Of the two I'd go for the EM1 over the NEX7. It has the advantages of built-in stabilisation, weatherproofing, Wifi, better viewfinder, faster shutter, and in my view, access to a better selection of lenses. Don't forget to clikc through to Amazon, B&H etc from cameralabs . com if you're buying anything at those places!

    It's great to see you back Gordon! I love your reviews even if I don't end up buying the products LOLS!Im very interested in this camera,I know its expensive however I think it will fill my gap.Is the body much smaller than a 5D MKIII?Im looking forward to reading your review on Cameralabs.I like good build quality as well & notice lots of metal looking dials.Im ditching the 5D MKIII as I feel disappointed with the soft images,canon should have ditched the low pass filter.

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs  Před 10 lety

    Actually I'm glad you mentioned Canon because they did the same thing with the xxD line. Remember the 20D, 30D, 40D and 50D? Yep, they were Canon's semi-pro bodies. Then Canon repositioned the xxD line into a mid-range body, while the 7D was introduced as a higher-end option. So the 7D came from nowhere and trumped all the xxD models to date. It does happen!

  • @cameralabs

    Great video Gordon. Sounds like you're a fan of the new Oly! (for stills at least). Did you get to try it outdoors in bright sunlight? Just wondering how the new EVF works in harsh light. I found the old VF-3 to be hopeless so I'm hoping this is a big improvement.

    Clanki, you are impossible to please! Just look at all the comments you've left on my videos - always complaining either about me or some camera that you bought! If you are going to buy a camera, it makes sense to check when it came out and if the rumour sites are talking about new ones. Even Olympus said they were going to do a higher-end OMD a long time ago. As for the OMD EM5, I still think it's a fantastic camera, plus it's smaller and cheaper than the EM1. The EM1 does not replace it.

Have already per-ordered one - was infulenced by your GX1 a while back and I love the GX1 but not quite the NEX7 sensor or OMD-5 which I already have but so much more fun to use GX1 than NEX. 9fn buttons on GX7 and tilt-able viewfinder etc. - only thing about M1 is weight - OMD-5 already a bit heavy but very nice camera

  • @sanghera7100
    @sanghera7100 Před 10 lety +1

    Great review Gordon! Which one would you recommend to buy for advanced home shooter, Sony A7 or Olympus EM-1? Does Full frame sensor really make a big difference in DOF as compared to 4/3rd at same aperture value? I have D600 with 24-70F2.8 but do hard to carry it around and thinking to switch. Can you please give some recommendation?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  Před 10 lety

      Hi Kamal Sanghera they're both great choices. I think the EM1 is a better-rounded overall camera, inevitably because it's had a long time to mature and has a great system of lenses behind it, BUT the A7 and A7r are pretty amazing cameras and my top choice if you want full-frame, especially if you have existing lenses from another system. I've made lots of comparisons with the EM1 on my A7 review, so have a look, especially on the verdict page: www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Sony_Alpha_A7/

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs  Před 10 lety

    No, until the 60D came along the xxD line were classed by Canon as semi-pro. And the 7D was a new series for them which didn't replace anything before it.

  • @cameralabs
    @cameralabs  Před 10 lety

    They never say never, but personally I think they won't make any more DSLRs with optical viewfinders. It's all Live View and M4/3 forward. The EM1 is the official successor to the E5 DSLR.

  • @TheBigron42
    @TheBigron42 Před 10 lety

    Gordon. You did such a great review on the Panasonic GX7, I decided to get one. But, I'd like to put the Olympus Pro lens, (the 12-40 f/2.8) on the GX7. I think it's a better lens from all the reviews I've seen, and it's cheaper ($300) than Panasonic's pro 12-35 f/2.8. So, do you know if the GX7 camera and Oly lens are fully compatible in terms of auto focusing, focus peaking in both stills and video modes, etc. while shooting with the GX7? It looks like the electronic contacts of the lens and body would line up all right, but I'm not sure if it would be a perfect match. Can you help?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  Před 10 lety

      The 12-40mm is a Micro Four Thirds lens, so should work fine on the Panasonic bodies! But I've not tried the combination, so can't say if there's any performance or feature compatibility issues. I don't think there are, but you may want to do more research first... sorry!

  • @allgoo19
    @allgoo19 Před 10 lety

    Only time will tell if it'd be the right decision.
    I think it's good, particularly for the Olympus.
    I think OVF will be pushed up to the niche market for the pros, then again I have seen youtube reviews by the pros saying they already dropped their OVF DSLR in favor of EVF.
    It's interesting to see how it'll turn out.

    People seem to miss the point of these larger m43 bodies. Many of us have smaller bodies, such as the Olympus Pen (I have a Pen Mini). A larger m43 body is very useful for better ergonomics and control. Thankfully Panasonic and Olympus both see the benefits of offering larger bodies for those who still want to Use m43 lenses. There's plenty of choice if you still want a smaller body. In fact there's a whole assortment, starting with the tiny EPM1/2

    disappointing that olympus is going the same route as the GH3 bigger is not always better, the reason for MFT's success is small size not sure why they are going the other way. also what is the point of adding a focus pecking, mic jack and no headphone jack and monitoring audio? anyway I like the new lenses but don't see a good reason to upgrade from an EM5. If this approach upsets you so much, then you won't be happy with ANY camera company as guess what, they also bring out newer and better models all the time. What's top of the range this year won't be next year. I just think you like complaining as that's all you ever do on my comments.
