Hyp2rlite VS FT6 Pro Skate Review

  • Hi everyone!! I was fortunate enough to try both of these skates and I didn’t see a review comparing the two, so I made my own! The FT6 Pro really focuses on comfort as a priority this year, where as the Hyp2rlite continues to focus on being lightweight and agile. It was suggested to me that I do commentary… let me know if you like it or not. Thanks for your time!

    I get crazy shin angle / knee bend in the Ft680s. the Jetspeeds tongue is very generous with its forward pitch.
    If you wear your shinguards under your tongue. Jetspeed is a must.
    I love how far back the tendon guard is. Not intrusive at all. Some warm ups I like to do require full mobility, So it's nice to have a skate that doesn't constrict you at all.

    Very helpful head on head comparison. The ankle bend speaks to me. I skate fly-ti now in my ultrasonics and felt like it never dulls (I’m 235lbs+, 1/2” Fire) so it makes me really want to try Black Step steel!
    I wonder about fit options with CCM but since I’m looking to get custom for whichever I’ll def give the FT6pro a hard look. Thanks again!

    AS a long time Bauer guy I wouldn't say a tennis ball of weight is heavy, we use to thing 800g was insanely light. Id actually like to see a boot to boot weight without holders because that's where I think Bauer saved the extra weight this time around. Lets not forget when we went from a lighter Apx skate 734g (size 8) to a heavier Apx2 skate 766g (size 8) due to the holder change and no one complained or even mentioned it (probably never even noticed to be honest). I hate to say it but the CCM FT6 pro is a better skate, plus CCM has a better custom system and options. Ill be moving outta my 1X customs into custom FT6 pros here soon myself. Great vid!

      Hey! Thanks for your comment! Wow, I didn’t know that about the APX and APX2 skates. The APX2s were beautifully designed and I wanted them so bad as a kid, I had the x3.0s from the APX line. Approx. 30 grams isn’t too bad. That’s the weight difference between my pairs of 2x pro and Mach skates. But like 60? That’s very noticeable. I had even been asked why I got FT6 Pros since they were heavier. It comes down to the person and what’s most important to them. To me, it’s comfort which I don’t mind sacrificing for some extra weight. It could be different for you. Trust me, I’d love to weight just the boots but I live far from my LHS so removing the holder, then weighing the boot would be difficult. Best I can do is weigh the holders I have and subtract from the boot+ holder weight. I don’t have the Powerfly weight but the LS Edge size 5 holder is 116.30g and the XS is 115.57g. Weighed those a few months back. Funny enough I think there’s a way to fit the old steel into the new holder so I’ll work on that. Also, if you’re interested, the 2024 tacks lineup was posted on Reddit. Maybe check it out? Thank you!! 😊

      @Chrissy1011  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hey! 😊 I know?! It’s a really tough decision! Well, I’m not the fastest and comfort is more important to me so I’d go with the FT6 Pro. Plus, I couldn’t go back to the Hyp2 after trying the FT6 Pro, it just felt a bit off. Since they didn’t have the tapered fit at PH on release day or even now (would have had to special order it) I got a tapered fit elsewhere and it’s much better. The Hyp2 is still comfortable but that’s not the skate’s main focus, y’know?

    thanks for the review.. been a Bauer guy my entire life and wanted to switch to CCM. Tried the FT6 Pro and felt like I had 0 ankle support. Checked and the boot is about an inch shorter than the Vapor Hyperlites.. makes a huge difference.. also wasn’t the biggest fan of the flex tendon guard.. I prefer a non flex guard. The CCM felt flat footed since the profile is more neutral.. 6:47 Ended up getting the Hyperlite and a pair of True Hzrdus 9.. love both of them..

    • @Chrissy1011
      @Chrissy1011  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Wow, crazy experience there. Are you going to keep both the hyperlite and Hzrdus 9 or keep one/return the other? Yes, all skates with the stock insole feel flat footed until I put in the Speedplates or superfeet. I agree with you, too much flex on the FT6P tendon guard. At least for skates where agility and quickness are the priority, the tendon should have little flex. Just enough so the tendon doesn’t tear (used 1x skates).
      I felt the FT6 Pro was too stiff for me before I broke them in 😂 also both of my pairs are the same height, though the back of the ccm dips down a bit. I’m glad you found skates that you enjoy! 👏

    Hi there, my name is Chris and I'm from the Guitar Slinger Hockey channel. I'm also a collaborator with Justin from the Beer League Bum Hockey Reviews channel. There are extremely few hockey equipment review channels (if any) out there besides our channels that are doing actual reviews and comparisons. I just wanted to say that I think you're onto something with your comparisons and direction of your channel. This video in particular is great at helping adult rec players understand that there's actually significant differences between Bauer and CCM skates, so great job! I'm trying to build a small network of real equipment reviewers and it looks like your channel might be heading in that direction. Let me know if you're interested in any type of collaboration effort or to just bounce ideas off of. Justin and I happen to live relatively close to each other, so we can sometime collaborate on videos, but we could always share ideas. Anyways, keep up the good work and reach out if you're interested, but no pressure.

    I am going to shop this Saturday. I am a bauer guy, I play forward, never tried ccm, I didn't like the hyperlite 2 as my ankle was rubbing against the eyelet stitching when leaning forward and there is nothing I can do about it (no padding and the tongue doesn't cover that area) !!! So it's going to be Bauer Mach or FT6 pro. Are you able to advise me? I am a bit worried the Mach will be too stiff!. Thank you

      Hello! Thank you for your comment😊
      I’m sorry the Hyperlite 2 didn’t work for you. I know what it’s like to want a skate and it just doesn’t fit/ feel comfortable the way you want to. I had a positive experience with the Mach but I’m leaning toward the FT6 Pro. More comfort, more padding, better performance and better steel quality. The only things the Mach has going for it is that it’s lighter and blacked out if you like that look. Idk who said the Mach was very stiff.. I get it’s the top of the line boot but I always thought the ultrasonic and Mach lost some stiffness from the 2s Pro.. if they were stiffer I’d have liked them more. Keep me posted on your decision. Thanks!

      So I went today to the shop and tried the mach in 6.5 fit2 and the ft6 pro in 6.5 tapered. they both felt great. I couldn't make my mind up, the mach in all black look incredible but so does the ft6 pro! I initially went for the ft6 pro as I wanted to try something new ( I never had ccm before) and ask the shop to warm the Oven until I pulled my scale out! 798g for the mach and 890g for the ft6 pro. The hyperlite 2 came at 820g in 6.5. 90g on one foot this is a big difference! maybe wrongly I changed my mind and went for the mach!

    Thanks for the review. Seeing it kind of makes me regret my purchase from yesterday. Was actually looking to get the X5 Pro but surprisingly they were not very comfortable. The store owner suddenly showed me Hyperlite Prototypes. He was not very clear and made it look as if these were Hyperlite 2 but with the old runner. Well, as he does not consider the upgrades in the HL2 as big upgrades maybe this is his point of view. Anyway the Prototypes were way more comfortable than the X5 Pro and have the better overall package. And at least I can still swap to Step Steel. And having these is kind of unique as they look very clean and hence have a nicer Design than the Hyperlites. Allegedly there are not many models out there 😅

      Hey! Thanks for your comment 😊
      I agree with you though, Bauer hasn’t really made their 2nd price point skates super comfortable. The X5 Pro was just reskinned, has a new tendon guard and holder. Plus.. you don’t want that plastic outsole. This is where Bauer cheaped out. For years Bauer used “Pro TPU” for the 2nd price point outsole and now they’re using “digi-comp” in one of the pure hockey review videos.. Bob says that digi comp is worse than pro TPU. So In the prototype you get half carbon fiber (maximum energy transfer/responsiveness) and half hyper flex. Also, the X5 Pro/3X Pro tongues feel cheap/thin and the lacebite guard isn’t very durable. It wasn’t a good idea for the tongue to have a stitch down the middle even though it may fold better. If you look at the 2015 1x 1.0 tongue, that was one of the best full felt tongues I’ve seen on a skate. It was a great design that should have been kept for the 2nd price point skates. I digress. I’m glad you chose the prototypes over the X5 Pro. The sales guy should have been clear with you. They aren’t big upgrades but the tech has been refined.. so I think the hyp2 will hold up longer over time. I’m actually working on a hyperlite vs Hyp2rlite video right now. Im going to go over EVERY difference I see. Thanks for your time!

      @@Chrissy1011 thank you for thoughts on that! It is a pity Bauer took these bad decisions. Stepping back in technology while selling the new models at much higher prices. The HL2 were actually a bit too expensive for me, though I kind of wanted them. Too bad the CCM were not in stock. I really like the big jump they made for the first and second price points in case of the new Jetspeed line.
      But for my purposes I guess the HL prototypes are not a bad choice at all.
      Looking forward to your HL vs HL2 review 😉

    Did you bake the FT6 Pro skates or just used them right of the box? If so, did you notice any additional volume in the boots after baking? The reason I ask is because I know they have that "game ready" fit. I wasn't sure if it meant they are kind if pre-broken in. I have the FT6 Pros that are borderline too snug. I went a half size smaller than normal because they felt noticably bigger than the FT4 Pro volume-wise (went from a 8w to 7.5w). I am hoping that baking will add a tiny bit more volume to the FT6 Pro.

    • @Chrissy1011
      @Chrissy1011  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Oooh. Good question and interesting situation you have going on there. So I definitely baked these in the store when I got them. I wanted to try that game ready fit but it was too wide and I didn’t want to drive all the way back to the store for just a bake lol. The regular width felt SO wide so I hoped baking would tighten it up, have the boot form to my foot more… and it did but it wasn’t enough 😭 after a month of skating I decided to get the tapered fit, which I did get to try the game ready fit in! I wouldn’t say it feel broken in.. just that the eyelets seem closer to your ankle, like a stock ankle wrap. It felt good on the ice but I immediately thought “I want these baked, a few spots feel weird.”
      Ever since I baked my MX3s in 2019 I’ve been skeptical about baking.. personally I think the boot softens and cures to the shape of your foot but it may or may not retain the stiffness it had before the baking process. Because of this, I didn’t bake my skates for years until this FT6 pro. It’s definitely a good idea to do so, especially for boots with a higher level of stiffness.
      I’m curious how things turned out. Please, share an update 😊

    • @andersborum9267
      @andersborum9267 Před 8 měsíci +1

      I went from a size 10,5 in AS3 Pro (E, i.e. wide) to 10,0 in FT6 Pro (regular) and agree that the FT6 Pro is quite a snug boot. Don't forget that after a couple of weeks worth of breaking in the skate, the liner is expected to reduce a bit in size and thus provide a bit extra volume, especially in the width, if that's your concern. I used the AS3 Pro skates on average about 5 hours a week, each week, for about 3½ years and if it wasn't for the bottom of the carbon above the heel section of the holder getting soft, I would still have used them today - and if a replacement pair of AS3 Pro were available, I'd opt for that .. f.. amazing skates.
      The FT6 Pro are heavier, but also more comfortable. I attribute part of the extra weight to the STEP blades, which to me is a significant challenge to adapt to, at least with the standard curve from the factory. I'll need to get another profile on the STEPs as there's too much of a difference from the old black steel XSI blades.
      I'll also mention that most carbon skates require significant time to break in, even though they're "game ready" from the factory like the FT6 Pros. I'll need to have a spot on the inside of the right boot punched a bit, which was somewhat expected, and I have to be honest that I'm looking forward to the skates being completely broken in a couple of months down the road, but I'm expecting to use them for 3½ years just like the AS3 Pros and as such, it should be well worth the effort.

      @@Chrissy1011 Hi Crissy. Thanks for the response. Sorry for my late reply. So I ended up baking the 7.5W and it definitely widened a bit more and felt good overall. However, the only thing I noticed (compared to my Ribcor 100k's in 8W) is that I am not getting as much upper ankle wrap from the boot. I think it is because the boot is a half size smaller so it has slightly less depth. So it makes me wonder if maybe I should just go back up to an 8 but in regular.
      You mentioned that when you got your skates they felt too wide so baking helped tighten them? Was this noticeable? The only reason I ask is because when I tried on the 8R, it felt good but there was slight side to side wobble, very slight. So it makes me wonder if I bake them and break them in more that it will wrap more around my foot and then "tighten up", and then having that bit of extra depth in the boot as well at the upper ankle area.
      Lastly, I know you've been testing the Hyperlite 2's as well. Which skate did you end up with in the end?
      Thanks! Happy Holidays!

I felt faster in FT6 Pro because I was able to dig in and push whereas I was slipping on the same cut in the hyp2rlites. On the other hand, the Hyp2 has a more forward pitch and it’s lighter so others may feel faster in that over the FT6 Pro. The foot wrap on the True is definitely more then you get with Bauer. The CCM is a 1 piece boot so its more similar to the VH/True. Pro tip, when you bake your new skate, custom or stock doesn't matter, take an Ace bandage or something like it and quickly after you tie the skate wrap the bandage super super tight everywhere around the boot. It will insure a better wrap around your foot. :)

The added weight, in some ways, is for the skater’s benefit. Bauer hasn’t matched this kind of fit.. who knows if they will 🤷‍♀️ thanks for your comment, I enjoyed reading your thoughts! 😊
