How to Cook Navy Beans with Ham Hocks 👨‍🍳🍖🍲

  • Learning how to cook navy beans is easy! When simmered with a ham hock and homemade vegetable broth, these navy beans are full of flavor, especially after the addition of a secret ingredient (as inspired by a fellow CZcamsr). Along with a pan of skillet cornbread or a bowl of rice, a pot of beans is a complete meal. Although this recipe is great as is, it would also be a good base for a navy bean soup with vegetables and ham.
The first step in cooking navy beans with ham hocks is making the ham broth. I boiled the ham hock on the stove in homemade vegetable stock, softening the meat and infusing the flavor into the liquid. Once the ham hock stock was made, I then added the navy beans, along with some chopped onion and garlic. The navy beans had been soaking off to the side, but I did not drain the water: that is why it is important to not add too much water to the pot in which you boil the ham hock since adding beans may cause the pot to boil over.
I simmered the navy beans over medium heat, adding some leftover ham that I had in the refrigerator as the beans neared completion. I then also added spices, along with the secret ingredient. With a little more cooking, the beans were done.
Learning how to cook navy beans with ham hocks on the stove is not difficult, so if you want to see how I made this recipe step by step, be sure to watch the video!👨‍🍳🍖🍲

This is a timeless classic. Difficulty level #1. Anyone can do it. Which is why this is a military style dish. Probably 200 years old or more.

      Hi, Jay!
I totally agree. I read that navy beans got their name because the US Navy fed them to soldiers. They were also planted in Australia in WWII in order to feed to US soldiers. I wrote about the history a bit in the article on my website.

Ham hock definitely gives beans a great, smoky flavor, so the ham made this pot of navy beans very delicious.
Although soaking beans is not necessary, I feel like it cuts down on cook time by about 30 minutes. About 2 hours vs. 1.5 hours, approximately.
