My primary modes of transportation are walking, driving, and light rail. If I can walk double the distance in a single day on my urban hikes, it will be worth it. I usually power walk 10 miles in a single day at 4.5 mph speed, but I would love to travel 20 miles at something like 5.5 mph speed in a single day.

    Five seconds faster with the exoskeleton AND it was your third overall attempt too! That's impressive... The applications for such a device - especially as the technology improves are far and wide - from the military, to police foot pursuits (and the criminals!), physical rehab, resistance training, and on and on! Where's the American counterpart?

      @@theexpierow8951 Thanks for the reply. Been thinking about this a lot and I am really concerned about the differential stress this will cause. I mean you now have super powered quads attached at your lower back. What about the calf muscles, ligaments, tendons of the knee for example? Rotational forces placed on the lower back and hips. IF you were poor trained, I am pretty sure this would really mess you up. Running that much faster with a body not used to it will create massively different forces AND impacts throughout the entire body. I think it is VERY awesome, but I also think there are a LOT of considerations if using this device.

    I don't see the use for me in the summer, when I'm typically doing 10+ mile days backpacking, or 20+ mile days for dayhiking. I think the battery would run out way to early and just be additional weight. BUT, I could see it being extremely helpful in winter, when I'm going shorter distances and I'm carrying more weight because deep snow is challenging and winter requires more gear.

    As an aging runner, hiker, and backpacker my biggest joint problem is in the knees. I suspect that a device like this is only going to decrease my knee longevity. It feels like this would be helpful to those experiencing hip fatigue, but I wouldn't advise if you have or expect knee problems.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Před měsícem +2

      My guess is that a knee version will follow or something that connects together. It makes sense. I know I personally would get more knee pain that hip pain. but it makes sense to start with hips as that's a natural anchor point for the legs.

    An exoskeleton that doesnt touch/impact the ground means you're probably shifting the force to another part of your body, probably your waist. is that safe to do so? more/less risk than strenously hiking/climbing/walking?

      I think it actually partly has a knock on benefit as everything is connected. That was my perception anyway. Didn’t notice anything that felt different.
