Hmmm, always learn something new. Your cook chamber lid edge gives you a map of the leaks. Cool that your ash pan fits perfect as a tuning plate. Waiting to see the biscuit test!!
As soon as he said... I am hank hill, I have a gas grill for that... I couldn't ignore him trying to tell me how to use a box store version of a real smoker anymore...
Have you done any other mods? A couple of other nice mods is extending your exhaust stack to get more airflow through your cook chamber, anytime you add tuning plates in the cook chamber it slows down the airflow pretty good. Second mod is adding a threaded ball grease valve so you can use your cook chamber to hold water for longer cooks. Lastly my only issue with using a mason jar for spice shaker is you don't have a great way to keep the spices dry. I live in a very humid environment so spice tend to clump up very fast. I prefer to re-use my old spice bottles instead of throwing them away. I really enjoy making my own rubs for different flavor profiles. Again just my .02
My wife bought some filets for me to cook on the grill. I was going to season it and cook the filets for our anniversary, but the rains kept me from being able to do that. I know, I’m in the desert and it never rains here in Phoenix, but we got hit, twice so far this winter, and it’s been damn cold and damp. We’re wearing layers of clothing to stay warn, when you guys might be breaking out the sweaters, might be. Some of you would be wearing shorts. But after 40 yrs of desert heat your body changes and 55 is cold to us, and the low 40’s is freezing. Heck the way it’s going we may see snow this year. When that happens you see it falling and melt as soon as it hits the ground, no accumulation like back east. Anyway, now that I have a break in the weather it’s off to Home Depot. So I have to ask, is there. Pattern for your charcoal basket! It’s the nicest one I’ve seen!
On this pit there is a baffle installed from the factory at the entry that deflects the heat downwards upon entry to the cooking chamber. The tuning plate he used still sets above where that baffle ends, so it should work just fine.
Ash tray pan as tuning plate, 🤯 genius! Thanks for the video!

👍🏾👍🏾
Did you record how you made the basket? Nice video
Thanks. No I did not make a video of the basket. Need to do one though.
Great vid. Love the Team Jesus shirt. #stayblessed
Thank you brother! You too
You can use bailing wire to hold your wood basket together....but you don’t have too. Ahhhhh, what other options do you have? 😂
Garden wire, just make sure any pvc or galvanising is removed, rebar ties also work.
Why you call me out like that. I have a Mason jar with a handle. Any guess where I'm from?
Damn you just saved me lots of money on not buying tuning plates.
Glad we could help

Sorry it took so long for me to respond. No I have no set pattern. I just kinda laid it out and it came together
Go Armstrong cabinets!
Can you use expanded metal to replace rusted cooking grates?
Sure can
Your "tuning plate" is below the area where the heat and smoke enter the cook chamber from the firebox. How is that supposed to work?
On this pit there is a baffle installed from the factory at the entry that deflects the heat downwards upon entry to the cooking chamber. The tuning plate he used still sets above where that baffle ends, so it should work just fine.
Could I use sheet metal sheets for tuning plates?
As long as you make sure they are not galvanized and just straight steel. You should be able to.
What’s the size on that expanded metal basket ???
Daniel thanks for asking. Its 10 inches wide at the top, 4 1/2 at the bottom, 8 tall and 12 deep.
3 BQ Thanks!! Is that size still working fine? I just got my Wrangler last Thursday 😁👍👍
Far cheaper at steel supplier locally
Zinc not nickel
