Rep. Katie Porter says the State Dept. is sitting on memos of human rights violations by Israel

- The U.S. is still considering providing aid to an Israeli military unit after determining it was credibly implicated in gross human rights violations against Palestinians prior to October 7th. Rep. Katie Porter, who received a rare individual briefing from the State Department, says she has major questions about why this is happening. "The law is clear here. What is not clear is what has happened at the State Department and who, if anyone, besides Secretary Blinken may be implicated in this decision."

The aid package works out to $2,700 for each U.S. taxpayer. It is very disturbing.

Not really. Her dog and pony show with CEOs was entirely performative, to make it look like congress is doing something while in reality it was doing absolutely nothing. And she couldn’t even call for a cease fire in Israel. She is probably not the worst person in congress, but wouldn’t say we’re gonna miss any law, initiative, or even a voice of conscience. If anything, she is finding one only now.

She sits on the National Security and Foreign Affairs Committees and she just revealed in the last week that Blinken has had reports on his desk about human rights violations which he WITHHELD from the committee. I have consistent principles and have no difficulty answering that question.

So, does America have a special process for aid to Israel as a workaround for the human rights crimes they are committing? If we make receiving aid contingent on individual military units, then Israel only needs to keep some units in compliance in order to receive aid as a country. This sounds like a huge loophole designed to allow US military contractors and the government to continue the big business of selling weapons.
So wild! Couldn't a country restructure military units smaller and smaller to escape accountability?

Protests matter. Rules against aid to units that violate human rights stem directly from protests against the military's School of the Americas led by Martin Sheen, Susan Sarandon and others.
Continued aid to a country committing genocide is an appalling policy failure. Now we hear it's also illegal to aid human rights violations, as it should be. This will come back to bite Biden.

Stalling by sitting on memos doesn't undo the violations of the Leahy Act (or other relevant laws), it just ups the number of violations committed before the root causes can be corrected.
I so appreciate her not giving her opinion of whether the aid should flow, but stating it is not legal for the aid to flow based on this law. Interviewers try to get people to give their opinions, but she sticks to the rule of law! Much more effective!

Saying that there is a procedure the us has in how they give military aid to countries that cover making sure human rights violations or war crimes are not committed but that Israel has some other "special different" process in getting aid from the us. All she is saying is that THEY DONT GET CHECKED. That there is no conditions and they are given aid unconditionally whenever they are at battle period 🙄
