    So cool! Great job!!!! I’ve got a 22R Toyota that just hit 200K so not touching that baby BUT I’ve been thinking about this with an engine for EV West for a mid 80s 4Runner. This looks even better though I’m just wondering about the brakes. Did y’all do a conversion with that? I’ve heard they can be problematic with conversions.
    Btw I once brought this idea up in an environmental science lecture in 2014 as the speaker was comparing C02 emissions of a brand new Prius (with the whole manufacturing process) to a older gasoline vehicle.
    I curiously said: “why can’t we just take older cars and swap out the gas engines with electric ones?”.
    He said it was impossible, and it would never happen. I was young and naive, now I say f*ck the naysayers - they’ll always exist.

      Reduce reuse recycle. Old car Conversions are awesome. That old steel has plenty of life left in it. For the brakes you need an electric vacuum pump and a reservoir. I used a capped 4" pvc pipe about 2 ft long for a reservoir. It was good for a panic stop and maybe 2 more full presses on the brake before the power assist felt weak. Took about 10 sec to recover vacuum after that. So on the road it felt safe but rock crawling or racing I would have wanted more reservoir capacity or a larger vac pump. If you keep the transmission and clutch and set the motor to "idle" you can use a belt driven vac pump.

      how about gas generator, smal battery, and electric drive? lighter, cheapee to run pprobably. reason why i dont liek electric car is that battery degradation and lack of battery recyling. dendrites that forms from battery degradation is messes with recyalability too. if you look at sandy munroe video caled wjats insize 680 battery, there could be indicator of how much of battery can be recycled by mechnaical seperation vs what chemical process would be needed, woudl it be susntinable process? recycling company called redwood. even if they fix this problem, will they dig through trash to find enviromentally damaged (rust, mud, etc) dead car batteries currently being dumped, and recycle them? in emissions, best hting to do is a ca rof where rear seats face the rear as comcpact 4 seate rreplacing 2+2 seater cars and yaris corolla cars, and rear mid engine small combustion flat 2 cylinder wnith no rotatiing parts to send power to wheels, instead magnets moving back and forth make electricty aand or a little supplemnetary compressed air , to power electric drive and compressed air driver, possibly with no battery or at minimal battery, using supercapacitor etc. single combustion chamber would help preserve heat for optimally low emissions or effeincy, hydrallic switch will push pistons back to position so they can be pushed by combustion.. optimal combustions per second for emissions with electric and mechnaical hybrid turbocharger, sometimes engine will run beyond optimal effiency or emissions levels for unsuually high power demand to protect long term emissiosn and fuel use reduction effetiveness of battery for common lower power use. with limited batterys to use, hybrids are already more effceint effective at reducing emissions, vs using that battery material for fewer cars who are electric cars, becaue most emissions happens in low speed high pushing power sitatuaitons of combustion car, where emissions are most likley to chemicaly harm health of nearby people becaue its usually compact city area with many people nearby. what battery size is best for longevity? see tony hellers climate change videos, maybe somone can make use of suspicious observers videos. mahle says they are developing non magnets motor, so its more recyclable and cheaper.. see aptera owners club video on saftey, unqiue materials they use, lightweight is safer to peopel outsid ethe car but can be safe for people inside car compared to hevaier caar if using right materials, and even safer due to wat type of crash is more likley to happen.. linearly more lighter weight exponentially causes less road wear damage causing less resurces and emissions and road downtimes. ..... the low weight compared to structrual strength and crash energy absorption, makes its safer per costs ,. the weight lower to ground (if that is how its still done) can make it preserve momentum around turns more, which is more energy effceint than relying on regenerative braking, and battery, brakes, lubrication, etc would last longer. tires longveity may not be affected despite higher speed and fun of preserving momentum with minimum g forces . .... in effeincy per functionality, rear seats facing rear in sompact 4 seater woudl make more sense. solarpanel effeincy is only arouund 20 percent and can become lot better if u want lower emissons(whch only helpful for heath of pepe wh send mhme near heavy traffic roads), then using mited batteyr supply for hybrids is lower emson than using the suppply for fewer cars whch are eletric car. big batteyr means exppnentially less effceint, so the more energy going in and out the battery means worse battery degradation, but more parraleles of battery reduce battery degradation... so more battery is not better, theres a balance to be had. see videos by tony heller, and suspicious observers videos on climte change and romanian tvee video called why woke wont go broke and leather aprons clubs video called a parabel on banking... theres a lot of reason to be suspicious and not much way to verify claims that climate change si caused by humans.

      That’s because the hyper9 motor bolts onto the transmission with an adapter plate. Modern EVs don’t have transmissions. You lose some of that power and efficiency by keeping the transmission and driveshaft, versus using the modern axle motors.
      The sound is nice, but getting rid of the transmission and driveshaft makes it possible to cram more batteries inside the frame. And a truck like that makes the perfect platform for Tesla Model 3/Y batteries, which are longer than the S/Y batteries

      Everyone pushing EV’s keeps trying to convince themselves, and everyone else, that most people don’t need to rely on their vehicles for anything but 5 min trips to the store. Cold weather, hills, desert, long range trips etc, are all things that make these things not only unfeasible, but potentially deadly. I haven’t seen a single EV that comes close to its claimed range, with any of the variables mentioned above. Family of 4 or 5? 30% loss. Below 32F? 30-50% loss. Above 100F and live near mountains with 4 in the car? Just forget about it.

I recall seeing someone do a conversion like this with a corvette, leaving the manual transmission in place, and the owner said it was fantastic. The joy of driving manual, plus electric torque and reliability...it's a great thing. Unfortunately, the HV Hyper 9 only makes about 120 HP, so great for this truck, but not so much on a muscle car or sports car. Pumped to see Toyotas kickin ass! As a Toyota based channel... This excites me probably a little more than your average gearhead! We would like to build an all electric FJ40! Good job guys. Thanks or tainting my water hahaha

    very cool, at 4:57 you show all the gauges working could you elaborate on how or what they are talking to on the back end, I assume the OEM speedo still uses the stock transmission output but for example where does the tach get it's signal from and more importantly how does the fuel gauge aka SOC (State of Charge) work, please and thank you

    Very cool, wonder how much the cost was, build time, and if you had to machine any custom parts for the driveline. looks like the original transmission was retained?

    How much were all the parts to make this happen? We've been considering doing a similar swap with our 4x4 pickup truck. Thanks!

    This is how Modern Evs should be made. No computers, no tech just simple. I bet they would be cheaper and have more range.

    Do you need to install an electric vacuum for the brake booster? And did you keep the trans? Or run straight to the transfer box?

    It would be interesting to know how much drive-line losses are affecting range. There are a lot of gears and rotating masses that that motor is pushing.

    The Hilux was popular here in Australia too. Need to get the word out about this one! nice work. Curious though, I assume it could take a larger battery load is that right? It seems a little light on even if you didn't want super long range.

    • @dissrepair
      @dissrepair  Před rokem +13

      It could take more batteries but since it is 144 volt (aka 7 batteries), we would have to jump to 14 batteries (double the packs) to work at the same operating voltage. It’s doable but also would add considerable weight and take up usable space. Thanks for the question.
