I love providing solutions that improve women's health and quality of life. For example, if you have a woman who has an estrogen sensitive breast cancer and she can't take hormone therapy and she has these debilitating hot flashes and night sweats. I love being able to come up with non hormone therapy options that work, and it's incredibly exciting to be part of advancing the field of women's health.
I am Joann Pinkerton. I'm a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UVA Health. I am the emeritus director and past president of the Menopause Society, and I direct a large midlife division where we provide care for women 40 and above. And most importantly, I'm a clinical researcher, and I'm active in trying to find new therapies to treat hot flashes, to prevent bone loss, prevent fractures, or to treat vaginal changes.
There are 55 million menopausal women, and all women go through menopause about 80% have hot flashes, 25% of debilitating, but they cause loss of work time productivity. And my research is really looking to try to improve their quality of life and their health. Currently researching a non hormone that treats hot flushes and the top-line data just released showed an improvement in hot flashes and frequency and severity as well as sleep and mood. And it's not an estrogen. And it can be taken by women who can't or don't want to take estrogen.
