This must've been a crazy amount of work! It's probably going to be a valuable resource for many. Thanks for sharing!
READ ME! (Editor's notes):
- Please listen on proper speakers, monitors or headphones to truly appreciate the unique sonic characteristics of each of the amplifiers!
- Isolated guitars edition coming soon!
- What was the idea behind this video?
In short: I wanted to make a video very similar to my 'One Riff, 22 Amps!' video from a couple of years ago. However, this time I wanted to use more amps (41 to be precise) and I also wanted to contruct a riff that would demonstrate various tonal textures of the amps. I wanted the riff to groove and most of all to not become boring too soon, so with many changes and different patterns. If someone were to watch this entire video, the riff should not become boring too fast. Hopefully I succeeded at least to some degree haha! I'll let you be the judge of that...
- Why do all the amps sound so similar/the same?
I don't think the amps sound the same at all but I do get these comments from time to time with these types of videos. Considering that you are indeed listening on good speakers, monitors or headphones (and NOT on an Iphone speaker or something similar): what you are hearing in this video is the same performance reamped 41 times over again through different amplifiers. What's not changing in between each 'take' are things like the player, the actual performance, the guitar, the pickups, the strings, the pick, the cables, the signal flow etc. This takes away a lot of variables that can also have a huge impact on a guitar tone. Take this into account. You're only hearing the amps and cabs change, not all those other things as they stay the same. Of course it will sound very similar in some ways each time you listen again. Try to listen for distortion character, overall EQ balance etc.
- Which one is your favorite? / If you could only pick one, which one would it be?
Well, the beauty of having such a large collection is that I don't have to choose. That's the whole point! Every amp does it's own thing as you hopefully can hear. Some amps work better with certain guitars and other with others. It's kind of like having a real life Axe Fx. Having said that, if I had to pick one amp to tour with, an amp that 'does it all'. The Peavey Invective 120 would be a good contender!
- Why didn't you use the same IR for each amp?
Maybe look a this as more of an amp showcase rather than a comparison. I want to emphasize each amp's character more and also showcase it with a cab sound that is fitting for the amp. Everyone uses different cabs and speakers anyway. Also, people will otherwise complain that 'all the amps sound the same'. If I used a Mesa people would complain that I should use something else. If I used a Marshall people would complain that I neede to use a Mesa etc. In this way hopefully a lot of different cab owners/users will be represented and it should make the entire listening experience more enjoyable. Plus, you'll get to hear each amp shine more in its own way.
Jon
I think that to fully understand the subtleties of each amp, a seinheiser or sm57 on a real cab would be more meaningful than digital simulation. But that's just my opinion.
How did you record sound?
It’s an excellent vid my dude, and the playing kicked ass. My fave is the mesa mark v 35
Jon, cool stuff
Why no Hiwatt?
I was about to choose between the Engl Ironball and the Laney Ironheart. Now I have to choose between 41 amps??? Well thanks! 🤣
Hahaha! You can do it!
@@SonicDriveStudio Great comparison, Jon. Loved it and got one step closer to chosing my new amp. Definitely a lot to choose from. But I think I'm falling in love with the Ironheart. :-) In my (small) homestudio the Ironheart Studio (rackversion) would fit in best (because of size) but will I be missing a lot in comparison to the IRT60H? I really like the heavy sounds, so I am not sure. Maybe you (or anybody else here) have some advice on this one. Thanks once again for your absolutely fantastic videos. Cheers!
@@jofuhren the IRT60H and IRT studio sound pretty close as you can hear. The 60 just has a little bit more oomph but for the studio I think the IRT will do just fine
🤣🤣🤣
@@jofuhren Hi Jo, as a fresh owner of a Laney IRT Studio I can suggest this amp for you in your small studio. In my ears there are not much differences between the IRT 60H head and the IRT Studio. The IRT 120H head is much more different. Did you compare the Peavey Invective 120 with the IRT Studio? That's why I choose the IRT studio for me against a Peavey Invective MH. Greetings from Germany.
Confirmed that EVH 5150 III EL34 is the best option to my ears. I own this amp 2 years ago and my sound is so badaaaass
I dunno man. I've been craving this amp (5150 EL34) for a year now, but Peavey Invective 120 is so thick, creamy, warm, saturated I'm having second
thoughts...
Thanks for putting in all the work towards this killer demo! My favorites are any of the Peavey 5150/6505/Variants, the Mesa Rectifiers/Mark V, and the ENGLs.. Always a fan of the bigger amps for headroom, but the MH's were all captured in a way that sounded wonderful.
insane amount of work! well done, this is so useful as a reference. the dsl50 really speaks to me, you make it sound great
These videos have helped me both learn a lot and source what I need without spending a fortune lol, fortunate to have 3 of those and one other not present, I'd feel extatic to own any of those, awesome quality work as always👊🤘
Thanks John, great job on matching the ir's per each amp...I have to say I really like the Friedman for its clarity, but still have to listen to all of them
Love these videos man, thanks so much for putting them together for us! Blown away every time you do a video, it's nuts dude. :)
Thanks mate!
Great song, amazing intro with that beast of JJ junior.... it sounds just great with my favourite guitar mate!!! Thanks for this amazing comparison!!!
I have an SD-JB in the bridge of a Les Paul played through a rev G dual rectifier. So, the dual rec. Sounded so familiar to my ears.🤘 Great vid. Thanks!
One thing people overlook is how well the Boogie Mark V 35 sits in a dense band mix. These amps are voiced to cut and elevate into their own audio space onstage.
I’ve owned one and it’s definitely a fantastic amp. The versatility alone is worthy of a nod. I find some who try it don’t have the patience to really dial in a tone their ear likes. It’s not a beginners amp for sure.
I really like how clean you kept the tone on every amp. Good to know there’s so much more gain headroom
Great video as always, i was amazed how good the micro dark sounds
It's a cool little amp! :)
GEEZ. This Video is amazing...I've owned many amps my self....I still do...and this is just great to compare other amps to I've thought about buying. It really illustrates the gain textures very well to help decide what kind you might go for! Some of these amps I used to own or currently own..and the audio REALLY did very well at getting the representative character on my computer speakers. Not many may know how much of a feat that really is! Crazy good studio work!
Great video!! Every amp sounded awesome, but my favorite was the JVM. I felt it had the most “urgent” tone while sitting perfectly in the mix without being too boomie. The recto...I guess there’s a reason it’s most likely been tracked the most out of all of these amps. Thank you for this video!!
Thank you very much for this video! Almost no one on CZcams does this kind amp shootout video anymore. Most of the ones I find are 6 to 10 years old and don’t have any current models.
Thank you for this video! This is such a great opportunity to be able to compare so many different amps, so get a feel for their differences. These amps are great in their own ways, so I think it really comes down to personal preference, and perhaps the kind of music you're into.
The standouts for me were really the Friedman JJ Jr. and the Orange Rockerverb. There's just something really wild and untamed about their distorted growls that feels really "rock n roll" to me (not the genre, but the attitude), yet they retain their clarity and sound dynamically very rich and mid focused. I was surprised that I also really liked the Peavey Invective 120 for pretty much the opposite reasons I liked the previous 2 amps. The Peavey's distortion sounded super controlled and tight, yet also had a lot of clarity... there's something really clean and controlled yet powerful sounding about that amps gain. That's not to say that I didn't like the other amps too, but these just stood out to me.
Video Is IMPRESSIVE! Great work! Thank you SO much!
Amazing work! Just wow! From the intro riff it's easy to tell how some of them are insanely tight (6505..) some are really muddy (Oranges... ok not the th30) BUT to me I got into the music with Marshall DSL20HR or the TH30 with the specific mix I hear in this video. These made it more of a one coherent mix/story! Others were super close too. Nothing few mix touches can't make them sit even better. Great work man. Hats off!
Awesome comparison, thanks so much!
Awesome comparison and playing!!! Really liked your solo, a bit Randy Rhoads-y! 😁 Thank you for including the Micro Dark and Terror, they are cool amps for the price!
What a star for doing this fantastic video. Your effort is appreciated
Cheers!
Huge video, huge sound, huge work and huge quality, you are huge man!!! Another goto video you gave us to listen over and over again, thank you man!
Thanks man!
All the Peavey amps evh and the Mesa boogies
Huge work! Amazing!
This video is great!!! Awesome guitar skills! 😎
Man do I love that sv20 tone. Killer job.
Love your riffs!
From what I hear-they're all great and useful 👍
Simply Awesome Brother. I love your work Man, Stay Blessed
Awesome video! Thanks for it man! Awesome riffs by the way 😎👍🏻
Cheers!
@@SonicDriveStudio this rockerverb is brutal 😅
Always delivering quality content. I love you man.
Haha love you too bro
OMG, that's brilliant work!
Blow me away dude! F yeah! Very cool video!
Good work! On the intro I was thinking "oh no, this is going to be terrible...." then the filter started to lift and I got it! Then the actual fun begins.... great effort sir :)
Amazing ! Great riff!
Great video!! For me the best were Friedman and Dual Terror. Hughes & Kettner sounded good too.
This is the best guitar amp channel. The way the riff starts with just the guitar without other instruments is very helpful to quickly make a decision on which amp sounds best!
The music sounds great and has the different parts to test the amps in different ways. It's perfect!
Thank you!
Awesome Vid!
Absolutely EPIC !!! 🤘🏻🎸👏🏻
Molt bona feina, felicitats!!
Amazing Work! Great Tones! As Always!
I would say: ENGL all the way! But the EVHs are also great.
Mesa Mark 5 sounds good too and i am also positively surprised about the Peaveys and the PRS Lunchbox :)
@Sonic Drive Studio love your comparison video. They are best on CZcams. Love you bro.
Love you too bro!
Awesome🔥🔥🔥You got a new subscriber.
Thanks for your hardwork
Thank you! One Guitar, 53 Amps will come out tomorrow by the way! Hope you check it out :)
Great job! Thanks!
Excellent video, my preferred amps are Orange you have to try it with PRs Custom 24 USA made, blows your mind!
damn, this is like a definitive amp shootout video! bravo!
Thanks!
Your videos r very useful, thx a lot buddy
Going to listen to this in the background while I work and record the times at which I like the sound the best so I don't get biased by the amp names. I've got my 8" JBL monitors at a decent level, but not so loud as to get ear fatigue. Having the raw track for download would be really cool so I could compare my amp sims and cabinet choices with the set here.
Really interesting listen! Boogie Mk V 35 is the cream of the crop for me. LOVE that Boogie tone!
Now that was fun! That lick that riff sounded best through the Marshalls in my opinion and as a little surprised that the evh's didn't bring out the color very well sounded flat..
Top 3 for my ears
1. Invective 120
2. 6505
3. Mesa Mark V 35
Thanks for putting all that together! Holy smokes that's a sweet collection of amps!
Amazing video. To me, nearly every one of these amps I'd find awesome in a recording, live, etc. When we A/B/C/D/etc them all then you can hear the slight differences, but these amps are all way more alike than they are different. Good player, good riff/song, good recording technique and the amp choice matters less and less.
I Love your playing!
Awesome!! you rule man!!!
So great!!!! man that Friedman kicks ass, totally surprised me
It's a really solid amp!
Impressive video !
Amazing!
Holy shit, thank you for this video
I think it was very well done as well. I love to buy from Prymaxe or Rouge. Fre shipping & NO TAX as it should be by law. Prymaxe gives reward points. I love that feature.
Invaluable comparison! My favorite is the 5150III LBX. Worked better in the mix. Very well balanced tone. Dual rectifier sounded incredible too.
This guitar shines like you man. Your playability is sooo smooth and "right to the target". Also the tone I love.
One day I will have enough money to buy these OwnHammer IRs.
Write your email and I will buy you the Ownhammer Heavy Hitters collections 1 & 2.
@@WillVRam Have fun!
More than anything this video shows how well you can set the amp to the song and bring out the best in each amp. Also shows you care about the signal throughout recording and mix. Everything sounds great and completely highlights the character of each amp. I dont have to read to pick out the marshalls. Or the oranges, the 5150. Every amp sounds great. But some of the amps I've disregarded definitely showed they can hold their own.
Hands down! Best guitar amp channel!
Thank you! :)
Dont mind me, just posting timestamps to I can check out the amps I'm considering buying lol

Amazing ❤️ the Or15 is so close like rockerverb 50
same genes if i'm not mistaken. the or is the dirty channel from the rocker with tweaks. lovely amp!
own a fireball 100 and want to get a 5150 in addition, this video approved my choices, great vid, thx for sharing!
Sweet! Both are tight and fierce!
this guys the best, everytime i hear a metal amp comparison, its always people playing thrash metal. i want to hear those string mute/pops on the open string, like this guy does at the start of the riff. from that, the ENGL fireball has a greeeeaaattt tone for those open string pops, for some djenty riffs.
Would have been cool to see how a diezel sounded side my side these amps. Excellent vid nonetheless!! Thanks a lot man
Diezel VH4 is high on my wishlist!
Hi Jon, this a really a great comparison of amps with one riff. I forwarded this video to my friends. Just would like to know if you have ideas to make such video and comparison with a baritone guitar?
No ideas yet but who knows
Hey John, I love your videos and tunes man. Have you ever recorded anything with the Mesa Triple Crown 50/100? Would love to hear your thoughts or see one of your fantastic videos/tracks about it. Thank you!
Awesome video Jon!
Doing a "blind listening" since I'm well aware of my favourites. All amps sound really nice and are different flavours offcourse.
My favvs:
1. Freidman JJ Junior
2: Engl FB 25
3. PRS MT15
I have owend the Engl Fireball 60 E625 (the old one) and I loved it, so i think I would choose Engl FB 25...
Cheers!
Very solid choices indeed!
I can agree with you. Your favorites sounds surprisingly good.
I like the playing more than anything else, I can listen to that riff an other 100 times. I will try to learn parts of it. Very inspiring as it combines all I would love to be able to play when it comes to metal. I realize I use way too much gain and scooped mids.
It’s crazy how they all sound great in the mix despite there being some pretty huge differences between some of them. I’m surprised how even the lower gain amps actually sounded pretty good in the mix (especially the 800 which sounded kinda weak on its own but when the rest of the music kicked in it sat in the mix so well). So many of those amps sounded killer but if I had to pick, the ENGL Fireball 25 nailed the sound for this riff the best for me. Amazing work though and damn would I love a chance to play around with all those amps!
Thanks! Its a very good for understanding how must the really amps sounding. Amazing reference! Need some guitar DI of this video for trying to get right guitar tone in reamping with soft amps. Its possible? Please...)
Thank you so much for the content. You make everything sound awesome.
I really love most of these amps, but man the Mesa Rectifiers are not for me.
Epic ! Maybe PSA 1.1, Triaxis, ADA MP1 after ? Great Works
I can't wait !
Awesome video and a ton of work, everybody should try a blind listen and you'd be surprised by what catches your ear.
Every time I hear your H&K I'm super impressed with the tone. If I ever went back to a real tube head, that one would be at the top of my list to buy.
Those are awesome!
H and K intro definitely sounded best to me
@@kenthall6584 which one?
@@SonicDriveStudio grand meister
I think I prefer the TubeMeister over the GrandMeister.
Wat een heerlijk uit de hand gelopen hobby! Echt vet.
Oh boy here we go!
Hey Jon you got the Dark Terror! I like mine it's got a cool character to it and it's surprising how many tones you can get out of one channel and 3 knobs
Yeah! I used to have one before but I think it was broken. You can hear it in earlier videos. This one sounds much better!
I love Friedman amps, pedals etc. The versatility of the 2 channel heads are my favorite. I would like to sell my Mesa stuff and buy some of Daves gear. I feel 20 watts, if used properly is all I would ever need. I love the Head/speaker amps. I could live with out a combo. Thats just me. I know many of the great guitarists love combos. If you by a cheap combo, watch out as the speakers are generally on the less desireable side.
Re-Amped I'm assuming ? Still a hell of a lot of work. Superb video.
This is amazing, just being able to compare so many different amps with the same player & setup. Love your riffs too! How's the low-end and volume on the Invective MH when you have the boost off? Hard to compete with the ballsy-ness four big ol' 6L6s, but if it can get even in the same ballpark I'm sold.
On reasonable levels I think it definitely can compete! There is just less headroom
@@SonicDriveStudio Thanks for the reply! That's great to hear. Do you feel it's noticeably different from the 6505 MH?
I owned a Hughes and Kettner triamp mkII. It didn’t seem to have the same cut as some of my other amps in a live setting. I hear some of those same tendencies in the grandmeister and tubemeister lines. It’s probably great for some people, but not my taste. It’s a really fun amp to play with, nonetheless
Three favourites - the Dual Rec, the JVM 410H and the Fireball 100.
wow, lots of work , sounded great. i think the Jvm had the best tone, but so many are so close. even closer if you didn't change the irs probably.
The JVM410H surprised me really. This is a very good amp from Marshall which do not sound like a Marshall in particular.
Forget the amp man, you deserve credit for the riffs you wrote. You have talent! 🤘🏻Top 3 for me,
1- Mark V 35
2- Peavey Invective / Fireball 100
3- JJ junior / Orange OR15
The best sounding one is the Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister Deluxe 40. I love this amp.
It's really good isn't it
Nice video.
Have you tried these at "bedroom" levels, and if so, which sounded the best to you?
Dude... Great video.... nice work.... Also how to do you get the impulses to sounds good. I have some of the exact same ones you used. I'm listening on studio monitors.... and my IR's are hard to get to sound good. Even when I tried one of your presets and noticed you didn't EQ the IR in the helix chain but rather in post processing. Either Way. I struggle with getting to get stock IR's to sound good. I find they aren't mix ready and need to be eq'd heavily.... Either that or..... I just hate bass frequencies in my guitars..... Yours doesn't have that flubby low end. I tried you rectifier setting with other IR's and was parametric eq'ing the crap out of them as well as applying high pass and low pass filters..... are my ears broken...?. how do you get them to sound so good!!!
Instead of being creative....I'm tweaking sounds for hours.
My favorite here is Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister Deluxe 40
That's a solid amp!
What a kick ass comparison! Thanks for all your work. This has to be one of the best demos of these amps period. Thanks again!
Since I'll never own that many amps (mainly for my mental health!) this is extremely useful stuff!
Man that Ironball grit really stands out
