  • While the Metro-North New Haven Line runs mostly along Connecticut's urban coast, three branches venture off of it to more rural communities. And David and I are just silly enough to ride them all in one day.

Love the reference to John Oliver's roast of Danbury! I love how it led to a sewage plant being named after Oliver! Danbury had to reconstruct their plant due to it being in violation of the Clean Water Act and a 2008 order from the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection because Danbury's sewage system removed 90 percent of phosphorus instead of the 98 percent required. They contested but failed. Construction began for it in 2019. Basically in response to John calling out Danbury in 2020, the mayor said they'd name the sewage plant after Oliver because it was "full of crap, just like you John", though he later told the press that it was just a joke.
Oliver doubled down and said Danbury had their best idea in the city's history and chickened out. He proceeded to offer Danbury $55,000 to local charities as well as $25,000 to the Connecticut Food Bank, in exchange for the plant to be named after him. He threatened to give it to other CT places like Waterbury if they declined. The mayor accepted on the condition that Oliver attended the ribbon-cutting, which he did in October 2020 and said "This place takes the worst that humanity can produce, and transforms it into something that we can live with. And now more than ever, there's something inspirational in that, because at the end of this awful, awful year, what could be more important than evidence that, if we want to, we can come together, overcome our differences and sort our sh!t out".

Great video! I believe there must be some sort of record for making this speedrun (ask the MTA in a tweet or email). I've always wanted to do something like this with all of the LIRR branches, which I heard is also some sort of scheduling exercise for new LIRR employees. I would say this is one of your greatest videos yet.

The reason why the train left Bridgeport is that most Waterbury, Danbury, and New Canaan trains run express to GCT. After the regular last stop they stop in Stamford, Harlem 125th, then GCT

Actually the Waterbury line has no direct service to downtown

Thanks for posting - I enjoyed it. A whistle-stop tour of some less familiar bits of Connecticut's rail system, amidst some nice scenery. I enjoyed the music too - a good match for the mood of the video.

This was excellent timing as this premiere started at 2200 over here. We are very impressed with the quality of the cars used on these trains and they pass through varied scenery. Thank you for the time you both put into this.

Thanks for the video of all three of the old New Haven branches. I got to ride the first branch you took several years ago.I was in Bridgeport got an ice skating competition and being a rail fan, transit enthusiast when I had some time off from the skating events I rode the branch. At that time the line had not been upgraded and had less service but I was able to get a mid day round trip in. It was a nice ride I got to see some of the old New England industries that had been abandoned and most likely generated some freight traffic for the line. But now this line is basically for commuters. It does have some nice scenery on parts of the line. One nice addition for my ride was the engine used was an old FL-9 that was in the old New Haven paint scheme. I look forward to your future adventures.

In addition to the Danbury Railroad Museum, Danbury is also the birthplace of the one and only Charles Ives. Go listen to some of his music, it's... unique, to say the least
