- Saga mandolin kit construction. A good video for us beginners! Was very happy with the kit and Saga’s customer service after finding out the neck was damaged after looking over the parts. Saga sent out a replacement neck the next week. Thanks Tom! Sunburst finish video to follow.
I have been planing on building a mandolin kit, sanding with that big piece of sand paper on the work bench to keep everything flush was a great idea, thanks for the video.

I bought one and used it as a pattern to build a mold. Used a lot better flamed maple with a triple A spruce top. I used the same book Roger Smirnoff as you have for graduations directions. Turned out well. I put mine together with hot hide glue.
aren't there any soundbars on your soundboard? I can see pencil lines on the back indicating bar positions. Haven't they sent them to you? The bars should have been placed, before the soundboard is glued to the frame.
Hi and thanks for viewing. Are you referring to "tone bars"? Yes, they are in there. I forget if the video showed me putting them in or not. But they are there, glued to the back. I still can't believe the sound quality that comes from this kit. Maybe it was the extra time and step I put in sanding the top of it to the correct thickness in the different areas. Strongly suggest researching that step if you build one. Good luck!!!!!!!!

What kind of glue do you use for the lining about the main body at the beginning???
Hi BulbaBill! I used cyanoacrylate (crazy glue) for the very beginning and last because it dries so fast and then the rest of it, in between, I used what they recommended which is Duco Cement. the two ends will want to pop up because of the plastic being so stiff. That really did the trick. You can see me hold the two ends down with my fingers for just a short amount of time. Then the tape to hold down the rest. Good Luck!! I play mine all the time, it really is rewarding to play something you made.

I want some info on these kits ... I would like to know if they use plywood on the sides or top .... I have some quarter sawn Appalachian red spruce I wouldnlike to make a top out of... but I need to know what wood they use on the sides and back ... I believe that I could make a mandolin that will sing if the sides and back are of halfway decent wood ..
Hi and thanks for viewing. I believe the sides are plywood and the top is not. The top is a solid piece which is important for it to resonate. That sounds like a great project you have planned! Best of luck to you!!!!

How do you know what thickness to graduate.
Hi and thanks for the great question! There is different thicknesses everywhere on both the soundboard and the backboard. It would be hard to describe it in a couple of sentences. The best way would be to by The Ultimate Bluegrass Mandolin Construction Manual but it’s not a cheep book. I could take pictures of the two pages but in a nut shell the soundboard center is .200” and tapers to .187” on the outer edge and the backboard center is 250” and tapers to .187” on the outer edges. The idea is like a drum, you want the wood to move and the best way to do that is to have the outer edge thinner. There is a spot close to the outer edge that is a little thicker but that’s getting way to detailed. Thanks for the interest and good luck!
