I’ll tell you exactly how Stevie felt about being called the greatest guitar player in the world. He was saying to me how envious he was of me because I was an artist, a photographer and I worked with abused children. I said, “But you’re the greatest guitar player in the world!” He shook his head “no,” then said said, head down, “But I only do ONE thing.” He was finally sober, and wanted to learn to find balance in his life. He was as humble as he was talented.

He always seemed so humble. I've heard stories about his generosity. He is not just a king, but a gentleman.
"it's like he's making love to it" Bro.. I have been saying that for so long. Jimi, SRV and Prince all had that "making love" to their guitar special quality.
Eric Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, and many other contemporaries of Stevie, said "it was like he was channeling the blues, an unending. aggressive straight line from drums and bass right through him.". Stevie was the best player ever (Hendrix was a better composer, but not a better player)_ He used the heaviest gauge strings for tone and to build his hand strength. Like a runner wearing ankle weights, he built up more and more speed with every thousand hours he played. And there was more than 30,000 hours of relentless scales and practice even though he had no idea how to read music. "It was all feel, I don't know what to play until the band warms up and then I just play what comes to mind."
He never played it the same way once!
In my opinion, Hendrix was not a better composer maybe as good. Just look at Stevie Ray’s work. “ ain’t gonna give up on love, life without you, pride and joy, love, struck, baby, riviera, Paradise, Lenny. I know there are others that I can’t think of at the moment, but then he was only 35 when he was tragically killed. Who knows what other music he would’ve given us had he lived. I think you do him a great disservice by not acknowledging his composing ability as well as his guitar playing and his amazing singing.

His band was called Double Trouble. He was supporting Eric Clapton on tour when he died, getting a last minute flight on a helicopter that crashed. RIP
My brother saw the 2nd to last SRV show in Michigan. He was really broken up when he learned that Stevie had died just a day or two later.
NO, he was a guest player at the Crossroads festival when he died. Stevie never "toured" with Clapton

@@nihil000 kinda, the producers and his manager wanted him to go ahead and record but Bowie wanted him to go on the road but SRV chose to record. It was all just a matter of the timing otherwise he would have finished that tour with Bowie.
As a sidenote, Jackson Brown heard him and offered the use of his studio whenever he was ready to record.

Throughout various interviews, SRV has credited Jimi Hendrix, Santana, and his brother as better guitar players he aspired to become. The man was truly better than he gave himself credit for.
Stevie also gave much credit to Lonnie Mack's guitar playing. They recorded together.

Was lucky enough to see SRV and Lonnie Mack share a stage at the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA. Always made sure to get tickets to see Stevie whenever he came to the Bay Area.

Yeah, every performance I saw he gave 100%. The only way to improve on the show was to get a better seat..
He also played with 13 Guage strings. Incredible finger strength.
Eric Clapton, who is often on lists of great guitar players, once said that he considered quitting guitar after seeing SRV play because he didn't know what he could do to keep up with him. He was amazing.
He also said the first time he heard SRV playing, it was in his car while he was driving. He said he had to pull over and stop do he could listen. When the song was over he said he had to find out who it was, nothing else that day was more important than knowing who was playing.

Another great and very underappreciated blues guitar player playing Texas blues is Johnny Winter, who we lost not long ago. The first white guy ever inducted into the blues hall of fame.
Take a listen to Johnny Winter playing "Be careful with a fool" Live in London in 1971 or "Third degree" .. And if you look close you will see a very young 25 yr old Tommy Shannon who later played Bass for Stevie Ray Vaughan in double trouble in his live videos including this one.

True... but, like Hendrix, he also tuned down a half step so that loosened up the strings a bit. As others have said, it probably saved him a lot of broken strings during his performances.

I'm a HUGE SRV fan, and I love the Look at Little Sister jam with Jeff Healey, but it is the only video of SRV I've seen where I feel like he gets outplayed. Jeff just has such emotion and energy. SRV is no slouch, but Jeff wins out for me in that one. Cheers!

Slash shouldn't EVER be mentioned in any list SRV is in...it's a huge disrespect to SRV. SRV is certainly the GOAT, hands down, and Slash shouldn't ever break the top 100 of any list...unless it's a list of extremely overrated guitar players, of which he should be at the top.

All you have to do is to read about and listen to the all of the rock and blues greats that played with Stevie talk about what they thought of him as an artist and person. Living legend, Eric Clapton said he had never seen a guitarist more at one with his ax than Stevie was. He also said that Stevie channeled the music through his body and out of his hands. Eric went on to say that it was because of that ability why Stevie could play for ridiculously long periods of time.
Eric told the story where he was supposed to make a cameo appearance at a concert and he was follow Stevie after he played and when it came time for him to play he backed out. When asked why, Eric asked, “How do I follow that?”
SRV didn’t read music he played by ear. Genius!! From seven years old! One of my favourite songs now is Mary had a little lamb live in Austin. He is the best ❤️
I saw him play twice with BB King at blues festivals in Dallas, two years in a row. The second time, BB refused to follow him. Some people in the crowd who didn’t know how Stevie played started asking who he thought he was, this local hotshot thinking he could play after the great BB King. Almost as soon as he started his set, Stevie called BB to come play. BB went to the microphone and told the crowd that this was his show, he decided how it went, and how it went is that Stevie played last, and please show him love. They did. It was a beautiful thing.
Stevie Ray is the GOAT. He did not need to see the strings. He just needed to reach them. And the music just flowed through him. Even Clapton says he gets lost in a solo sometimes, but Stevie Ray was never lost.
Just to describe the impact that Stevie Ray Vaughn's skill had on people. The day he died, i was at an Old Time Fiddlers Convntion in Galax Virginia. This is solid bluegrass and old time mountain music competition. Hillbillys, rednecks, and some of the most incredibly talented instrumentalists,alive!! The Country and,Gospel music radio station broadcasting the Convention live made the announcement that Stevie Died in the Helicopter crash. You couldve heard a pin drop. Thousands of people were dead silent in shock. Even in the backwoods and hills of North Carolina and Virginia, people knew his name and his talent. Thanks guys for showing him respect.

Stevie gave all props to his band. When questioned about where he was going to be he said WE are going to be at such and such place. He was very humble for being able to play like that.

SRV. The pride of Dallas (Oak Cliff). He was my first live interview on air. Our station was downtown, just a few miles from his house, and he just showed up one Saturday afternoon cuz he thought i sounded nice. We were both shy. Stayed 2 hours. He was one of the kindest souls ever.

"Let's Dance" is IMO a very under-rated album (and I was amongst those slow to appreciate its value). This would be the first time many of us heard Stevie. I don't think that album showcased the core of his playing and singing preferences but it certainly reflects a versatility that is often overlooked.
Stevie is the greatest musician I have ever seen! The only guy that had me choked up on the verge of losing it at his concert, pure soul like he was channeling from the heaven’s basically is the only way I can attempt to describe how unreal he was!

SRV was part of a three piece band called Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. I was lucky enough to see him in St. Paul MN. roughly a month before his crash on Aug. 27th. My second favorite guitarist (Alex Lifeson's) birthday. Also my sister's birthday. weird but true.
BB King said in an interview for a tribute to Stevie Ray that he had many ways of not only showing he had talent but had the feel of playing blues .
When he put the guitar behind his back,he didn't unplug it. He unhooked his guitar strap,then hooked it back to the guitar. Great reaction
Hendrix had to go to England to get discovered. He was just a back up player for bands until he went to London in 67. This is Stevie, one hour after being revived by Toronto medical personnel from a cocaine induced coma. It took bags of IV fluids and vitamins to "rouse" him for this show. Hence the extra extra sweat and notes on top of notes.
Tommy Shannon, great bass player. He and Stevie would often have little telepathic conversations on stage.

I 100% agree that Stevie Ray Vaughan is the GOAT. However, he was extremely humble about his talent. I don’t know if he admired himself or not, however, there was dozens of other talented musicians he admired. So yes, you are right. He was very humble.

Blues guitarists have been playing behind their back as a part of showmanship for a long time. Charley Patton was doing it in the 1920s, and T-Bone Walker (from Texas) was doing it in the 1940s. T-Bone Walker was a very important figure in making Texas Blues a big thing.

The band was called Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble. Luckily, I got to see him live and in person one time, and it was a mind bending experience. SRV (RIP) was one of THE BEST Guitarists to ever walk the planet, bar none. He is often compared to Jimi Hendrix, but he could hold his own in any situation. And he had that COOL factor going for him as well. A real pro.
He was truly the most humble soul. I remember the day he passed. My heart literally broken and I just sat and cried. The world was so lucky to have him and his AMAZING catalog.
SRV IS THE BLUES!! Texas blues. He brought the Blues back to mainstream when the genre was dying out. He reintroduced the world to the true blues masters. His idol and Godfather was Albert King. There is a great show with him and Albert called In Session

The other guy you want to check out is Jeff Healey - See the Light (night music 1988). He was discovered by SRV. They even played together on stage. The thing about Jeff Healey is he's blind and plays a wicked guitar. And yes, in my opinion SRV is the GOAT
This man was born to do what he did!, you'll NEVER hear a better, cleaner sound, but more than that his steeze was filthy and nasty! A Natural blues soul.
He had many influences but his greatest single inspiration was probably Albert King. And even though Stevie was technically and more proficient guitarist or perhaps more versatile than Albert, there is footage of he and Stevie jamming on a television program I believe in Canada in the late 80s. And Stevie show the proper respect and didn't try it out playing didn't try to smell them, but rather supported overcame and when it came time for Stevie to solo he did so to the best of his abilities and you know what that means. That alone was more than sufficient to submit Albert King's respect for Stevie has a legitimate movement in his eyes. I'm sure that meant the absolute world to Stevie Ray.?

I still regret not going to see him on that particular tour, I can remember thinking that the next time he came around he would be a headliner and that would be a show really worth making an evening of. SRV was FIRE!!!! From my neighborhood!!! I met him once at the mall. Humble dude! The GOAT for sure!
Forgive me if I have told you this before, but lucky to see him 3 times in concert. First time I saw him was warming up for BOSTON. Had never heard of him , but it was one of those "OMFG, who is this guy??" moments. Last time was with his brother Jimmie's band, the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Between sets, Jimmie sat down with a double neck guitar, Stevie walks up behind him, and each takes one neck of the guitar and play at the same time. There are vids of that here.
I was lucky to see Stevie in Denver in 1984, just after his second album came out. We all waited outside for a long time, went in, sat in our seats and Stevie came out and hit the first notes on his guitar and we were on our feet and didn't sit down during the whole thing. The soul connection and vibrations just went right out of him and into you and it is impossible to describe. You said it looked like he was making love to his guitar - I always have this image of Stevie in a hotel room after a gig - and he and the guitar of the evening are in bed, sitting up against the headboard, both smoking cigarettes

This is what I've always thought blues was. Just like how when you 2 started this metal journey you just thought metal was metal and just screams and grunts. We have opened each other's minds to new music. Smokey was in his elements today.

Guys, don't forget to give the flowers to the two guys that are makin' your heads bob up and down during this performance. It takes all three of them; Stevie is just the guy that makes your head twist left and right at the critical points in the track, if you know what I mean. This is "Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble", and he would turn over in his grave to think that his best friends and band mates weren't gettin' the credit they deserve in all these reaction videos. I think that rappers are so up front on their tracks that what's going on in the background may not be as important, but that just ain't the case with blues, during any recent decade. The other artists ARE the sound, as well. IMHO As far as humility, Stevie always said his brother Jimmy was the best guitarist he ever knew. He's good, but watch his vids and you tell me.

One of Stevie's big influences that rarely gets mentioned is Lonnie Mack. There is good videos of them, where Stevie says Lonnie was the best guitarist he played with. They recorded Wham album together. The American Caravan concert is a good one to watch. Lonnie is buried in the same cemetery as my dad. I stop at Lonnie's grave every time I go there. Besides that, he was married to my cousin. Have seen a lot of pics of them together. Never saw Stevie, but did see Lonnie, he came to family reunion one year and played Memphis for us all. If I had only known lol, I was about 10 but still remember it very well.

I grew up in Chicago and saw him play at Buddy Guys place Checker Board lounge a bunch of times...you can't imagine the vibe in the room with him playing, it was like the music flowed thru him...When BB King, Eric Clapton, Albert King say he's the best they've ever seen....GOAT...

Watching Stevie and Jimi play is like watching the birth of a supernova. It awes me while equally makes me want to cry - both happy and sad. The pure beauty of the moments they're in... I lack proper words. FYI - SRV was a HUGE Hendrix fan. Jimi played behind his back, with his teeth... That's where SRV got it. But SRV gave it his style. I love them both, but I was a Hendrix fan first, Jimi did it all first, and as the saying goes, Jimi might not be your favorite guitar player, but he's for sure your favorite guitar player's favorite. Watch Hendrix at Woodstock and/or at Monterey Pop - The Experience's American debut. Jimi literally lit that performance on fire... AFTER Pete Townshend had just smashed his guitar right before Jimi went on. Look for "Wild Thing". You'll dig it.

@@norair1010I completely agree. I was exposed to SRV first, and he's still my favorite. But it's impossible for me to fault anyone who prefers Hendrix. The fact is they're the two at the very top of nearly every discussion about the greatest guitarists of all time, and I don't think there's a wrong answer between the two.
Simply the GOAT. EDIT: Listening to what you were saying at the end, how does it make them feel to be the best? I'm sure others have written this in your comments but, SRV was a very humble person. Hearing him talk, you would never know you were speaking to the best that ever was. In fact, speaking of Hendrix, he was also just as humble. Both of them were not only beyond this planet great at their talents, they were also down to earth humble about it.
Stevie was incredibly humble. Just a super cool guy. Very down to earth and nice. Then he plugs in…….
SRV =Blues Guitar .Double Trouble was his band. To be in the audience was magnificent. The Rolling Stones passed on signing him . Imagine
SRV has an amazing collection of music! Look for his show from Austin City Limits. Any of the recordings from that will have you floored! He has a bunch of instrumentals also. My personal favorite is "Pacific Palisade". Great video this morning guys! Not a bad way to start my morning with some SRV! Have a great day!
I agree Austin City Limits 1989 is golden. (He was also there in 1983). And my favorite song of his is also Riveria Paradise from Austin City Limits 1989.
