Cracking video as ever G, but I can't share the enthusiasm over Standard Premium - this is for a number of reasons:
1 - The at seat ordering, wi-fi and media are all in Standard Class too. In fact, LNER do a better at-seat order offer, the site works better and is more reliable. Avanti didn't have coffee on the at-seat order site for some of their services until recently, which was a bit daft
2 - The upgrade to Standard Premium only really offers you the same bigger seat as if you were in first class (and the seats are the same with just different anti-maccasars). Eventually, coach G on 11 car Pendos will become standard for an extra standard carriage, and coach H (on 11 and 9 car Pendos) will be the standard premium
3 - The upgrade cost is the same as what the Weekend First upgrade used to be, without any of the complimentary snacks or drinks. So it's less for the money.
4 - Those of you who do Seatfrog upgrades (as I did Euston to Manch Picc recently) can often get a cheaper upgrade to first class. I did that for £10 and that was £15 less than what Standard Premium would have cost.
5 - Trenitalia (who part-own Avanti) do Standard Premium on their Frecciarossa high speed trains. Complimentary coffee and snacks in morning, complimentary prosecco and snacks in evening when I travelled from Naples-Rome and back. So as a direct comparison, we get less over here.
The fact you had coach G (LovesTrains) all to yourself probably shows either not everyone is aware of the product yet, or they've deemed it not good enough value
2:32 think it where they put the onboard trolley but it's got a pretty rare service because Avanti West Coast don't really do Birmingham to Manchester but strange workings do happen when it is a bank holiday weekend. Brilliant Video and also pretty clever to do this video because no one has covered this. I to take my hat off for this.

Standard prem is just basically a comfier seat to standard but 15-30 quid for it is a rip off the other day i did the last southbound avanti from glasgow with a FC upgrade of 12 quid where i got served food and enough beer to make me have a moment that the cleaners of the toilet will wanna forget about and also having 2 cars of a 11 car of Standard prem makes first class pretty rammed when there is about 4 people in 2 carriages

Great vid G. Loved it. I call it Birminghell as it can get busy and make ya day hell. The interior of them looks great. I always look now to see if the Northern Trains have USB on them. Oh, they could do a Mcdelivery type service for standard premium or they do it just for you. Looking forward to the next one.

You miss have not got a direct train from Birmingham NS to Piccadilly, the only services that run on that route are the Cross Country Voyager’s. Did you change at Crewe?

Basically it's an unique working, not sure why Avanti did it, as the 9S54 service normally goes to Edinburgh from Euston on weekends. Looked into it and it seems that only that train went to Manchester instead of Edinburgh. The other services carried on.
G in coach G, drinking her tea, looks fine to me, my dear. Toilet smells nice, what a surprise, now she's brim
full of cheer. G's the best by a mile, yes she travels in style and her knickers aren't too frilly but do not despair,
she'll buy a new pair when she arrives at Piccadilly😁

6:02 that console used to be used for the Virgin media service previously offered on the Pendolinos. The system was eventually replaced by wifi but they didn't bother to get rid of them. Despite the fact they're Avanti Pendolinos, they're still Virgin in my mind. I wonder whether Standard Premium will survive when Avanti is absorbed into GBR's North West and Central region.
Geeky fact: those white hanky / doily things are called antimacassars - so called because it was stop Victorian and Edwardian men’s oily hair (which they used to oil up with Macassar oil) staining the seats! Why trains still have them, who knows!

Its First Class minus the lounge and alcohol by the looks of it.
I regularly travel First Class, I don't mind paying extra for it in exchange for hot meals and wines, hope it makes a return after Covid restrictions are lifted

Excellent video! Think for what your paying it’s mostly just paying for a wider seat and in most cases (as you can only upgrade on the train) it’s usually empty. So £15 for just a wider seat and a carriage to yourself isn’t worth it in my opinion, you should’ve got that tea included in the price I think, maybe a tea and a biscuit as complimentary. I have a feeling that if it proves popular they’ll increase such service but atm it’s not worth it.

In all honesty you are paying up to £35 per person for a slightly wider seat. No extra perks or freebies.

Another interesting, informative and well produced vlog. I imagine there will be times / certain journeys when a First Advance ticket will work out cheaper than a Standard Advance ticket with Standard Premium upgrade, such is the bizarre minefield of National Rail ticketing and that's before you factor in the value of the complimentary food & drink in First.
Have you realised that the coach formation in 11-car Pendos is 'FU G' - how rude of Virgin / Avanti.

As Avanti West Coast have refurbished most of the Class 390 Pendolinos aka (PendoLEANos) and Class 221 Voyagers. With the Class 221 are to be replaced by the Class 805 & Class 807 IETs in few years. I would think that Crosscountry should inherit the Class 221 from Avanti West Coast to increase longer journeys they operate on. Mind you the Class 390 "PendoLEANo" are incredible trains and people don't realise that they do tilt. And LNER Class 800 & Class 801 Azumas used on the ECML that don't tilt.

@@jacobporrett haha well it's in a cracking coach number, and has fancy headrest coverings so I was happy in there! 😀
@@GLovesTrains Fair enough G. Guess I will have to try it out at some point and give my own opinion on it.
The seats are essentially the First Class seats that Virgin used, which are much wider, more padded and are much more ergonomically designed which makes them far more comfortable than most other UK train seats apart from the intercity 125 First Class (rip) of course .
Upgrade to Standard Premium is ok for the journey itself, however I prefer the full First Class package which also gives you the use of the First Class lounges with free coffee and nibbles on tap, comfortable seats, TV and in some a bar serving beer and wine which is extra but on trains itself is free.

What time service was that? as I never knew avanti did a direct service from new street to piccadilly
It was at 10:15, I think it may have been because it was a bank holiday, coz I did think myself it was a bit odd

@@GLovesTrains diversions I think. Whenever there are engineering works on the WCML Avanti have been known do divert trains via Manchester and Bolton. I could be wrong though
There was works so all of Avanti services were terminating at Carlisle and all affected services were going to Manchester as they couldn't go to Warrington Bank Quay. The 9S54 service for some reason was to only go to Manchester (and not go any further).
I should imagine these trains were built by the Italians.
Ironically, Trenitalia has an experience of operating Pendolinos for over 40 years.
Pendolinos are Italian made.
