    Richie, Just recently getting into your lessons due to my criminally delayed exposure to Woody. A true genius. Thanks for sharing his lessons with the rest of us. I find his playing to be very symmetrical but in an unexpected way. The fourth and fifth intervals are so present in his playing, and that’s part of what sets him apart. It’s so difficult to play the way he does purely as a technical matter, not to mention in a way that sounds musical. It’s likes he’s dancing around the basic notes. These exercises you’re sharing really help demonstrate how he arrived at his unique sound.

    These four note motifs were first shown to me by the Grammy award-winning trumpeter Brian Lynch. He referred to them as 'pentatonic pairs'. Thanks for sharing Mr. Vitale, time to shed!!

      Seems strange to refer to someone as 'Grammy award-winning' outside of Wikipedia article or an news article or interview.

      A trumpet friend of mine, John Eckert said, "I've never seen anyone think that fast!" Woody wasn't just naturally gifted with talent, technique and a unique sound, but he practiced incessantly and knew the trumpet in and out.

    May I ask what you think of the Yamaha Bobby Shew Jazz mouthpiece?

    • @RichieVitale
      @RichieVitale  Před rokem

      I liked it, but I used to think if a used Hubbard's mouthpiece I'd sound like Freddie, or Shew's mouthpiece and I'd sound like Shew. It's a GREAT mouthpiece but finding my mouthpiece was a bit of trial and error 🙂

    Hey Richie, over the years I've heard folks say to slur everything and noticed that you are tonguing these exercises. Can you share your thoughts on why you articulate each note and the benefit of doing so? Do you ever slur these, or only tongue?

    • @RichieVitale
      @RichieVitale  Před 4 lety +1

      First of all, let me apologize for not responding more quickly...I had over 130 comments there were held for "approval" I wasn't aware of.
      When I'm playing quick 8th notes, or 16th notes, I slur every other note...but NOT starting the slur on the 1st to 2nd notes...but rather, the 2nd to 3rd, then 4th to 5th, etc.
      Of course, that's just a general rule I break when notes aren't linear.

      Hi David, the opening song is called "To the Beat of a Different Drummer" and the PDF's are really from my book called "A Lyrical Approach to Jazz Improvising and both are available on my website here:
      www.richievitale.com/store
      I tell people they are also free to stop a video and study it at any time and some people take screenshots of the video.
      Hope that helps!

      Anyone who joins my recently started Patreon page at any level ($2, $5 and $10) can request a chart or PDF. So many people have asked for PDFs of my lessons, it would have taken away the time for the lessons here on CZcams and the money allows me to purchase video equipment and apps like Logic. The page is here:
