    MOT due so I was concerned about potential failure on beam pattern. A very useful video, thank you. I was pleasantly surprised by the results and the car looks much improved. I went in harder with a 250 grit wet n dry as the covers were badly clouded. Once the yellow residue went, I moved onto the restoration kit. I used a wide plastic insulation tape as I found masking tape not robust enough. Also opened the bonnet and used a dust sheet for protection. The polish sprays everywhere!!

    • @TheParrottBros
      @TheParrottBros  Před 5 měsíci

      Great work, & i think your right to use a stronger tape the masking take doesnt always hold up when wet or you go wide when sanding! some headlights ive seen over the years do look like they would need some seriously course paper to get the clouding out.... Good luck with the MOT 😎

I bought that kit for my own headlight units when i first got the car....it worked to a point but i had issues on inside too and bugs!!! in the end I swapped out light units for a new pair. On my TT I pulled the headlights out and sanded them with 600grit. It took time to get through the factory coating on the outer edges.
    Then I used a DuPont 2K clear that I had left over from painting my Escort Mk1.
    The lights look so opaque after 600grit, but the instant the 2K clear coat touches the plastic it pops clear.
    The plus side too modern 2k automotive clear is the UV stabilisation. I’m now one year later here in South Australia 🇦🇺 and it still looks perfect.
    Another plus is 2k clear can be Sanded and flow coated, and buffed an polished.

    Wet sanding will help keep the polycarbonate lenses from melting onto the abrasive paper and minimize the risk of crazing that can happen so easily. Acetone vapor is probably the coolest method of restoration once you’ve achieved the even frosted glass lookin finish. I'm gonna try it here in a couple days hopefully.

    Hey Dom, thanks for sharing this. I got my '99 TT 225 coupe back in October 2023 and got the restoring kit and ceramic coat you recommend here. If the weather here in NL is nice this weekend, I'll take a shot at restoring the headlights, that are probably still untouched since '99 haha.
    The question I have is, can this also be done with the taillights? Is it worth it? I do have that "sticker" in the taillight that I've seen on other's TT, and I don't know what's it for. I was planning maybe on removing the stickers and give it a good restoration with this, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea or if it even would work, given the taillights are red and not clear as the headlights.
    Thanks again and keep up the amazing content coming! Cheers!

    I just got my 02 mk1 1.8 tt 5 speed quattro "non 225". Previous owner let car sit for about 8 months in his garage , told me the battery is shot but it will jump start. Long story short , new battery i charged it as well , but still have to start it with a jump pack . I used a multi meter and car off it sits at 4.8v-5.2v with terminals connected.... if i disconnect the battery and check just the battery i can watch the voltage SLOWLY go up on multi-meter every few seconds the battery will show 4.8v ... 4.9v ... 5.0v .... 5.2v.... "you get it" lol . Are there any common issue's i should look for before i trace every ground wire known to man , i dont know if it makes a difference but after jump start still seems to have major voltage drop like if you roll a window down lights dim , had an alternator test done and done my own shop said its fine he didnt give me any voltage specs and my charger / jumpbox/ alt testor just shows its good my testor just gives me a check mark as in its good .

    • @TheParrottBros
      @TheParrottBros  Před 6 měsíci

      It sounds like high resistance on your cabling, I reckon you may need to replace the look between the battery and starter. It’s common for getting corroded and causing all sorts of issues
      You can check it at both ends and pull back some of the insulation and see what the copper looks like
      Alternatively you could have a circuit drawing far too much current, a battery shouldn’t show less than 12v even with something connected until is being discharged / has been discharged.
