Everyone saying they prefer conor, I'm sure the guy doing conors part here prefers him too lol that's what happens with cameo vocals
people saying anything about Ethan Gruska vocals aren't as good, just stop. He engineered the whole record, understands this part wasn't written by him, and this version is incredible on it's own. I'm pissed I saw all these comments years after smh.
Damn, this young lady has got it. Fantastic.
this is heartbreaking and beautiful
my favorite song
meilleure version !! superbe ❤
Nice sweater 👍 beautiful song
I really, really love this performance, possibly more than the original.
I love her country way
Badass
Great version, but I prefer Conor Oberst on the vocals. His voice cuts into the soul of her vocals in a way that really strikes out and enhances the meaning IMO. Would love to hear Phoebe do a version of Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.
Eye Films Ltd I second all of that!
this needs to happen
Doesn't help that the guy sounds like a woman
goosebumps
AMO AMO AMO AMO
I may be in the minority, but I think this guy's vocals blows conor's away (at least in every live performance of this song CZcams has to offer)
Yeah, this is Ethan Gruska. He’s a great singer and definitely no slouch
Agreed
Great performance but as others have said Conors matured voice cuts and gives a lot of soul when it come in.
😂😂😂😂 I went to find that recording 🙄🙄🙄 dude. That guy is atrocious. Is Conor her brother?
@@TheRoadLessChosen u not fr fr right
@@nicolasandrade7142 I’ve been singing since I was about 10. I can play 3 instruments. I have 2 degrees in voice. I’ve sung all around the world and was a soloist on a Grammy nominated cd. I can sing rnb rock or country amongst other things. Yes. I’m fr fr right. They are both bad but the original singer is straight dog shit. Fr fr
@@TheRoadLessChosenthat's a whole lotta text brotha, i was more baffled by the fact you didn't know who Conor Oberst is instead of trying to defend his backing vocals but you do you
@@nicolasandrade7142 lmao. The fact that anyone knows who that guy is says more about the people listening. You can’t hear.
Ethan! 🔥
She's mesmerizing. Her range and that subtle vibrato she does is breathtaking. It pains me to say though that often when I'm hypnotized by one of her songs something hits me like a speedbump. In this video its the rando backup singer, in "Motion Sickness" its the way "and WhY do you sing.. accent" hits, in "Smoke Signals" recording it's the way she doesn't slow and deepen when singing "trash out on the beach" the way she does in live versions, which is a cue to me that she is a good songwriter and has had issues in production work. Shes new enough she probably hasn't had a decent enough producer. She's my favorite person to listen to these days, such talent. I just feel like some back luck in recording/ backup musicians is holding her from being Really famous.
I totally agree. Even though it takes you out of the moment sometimes, it does feel real.
The rando backup singer (not the same contrast as the Conor Oberst vocals, but hey) is Ethan Gruska. Give him a listen :)
Interesting, I find the album exquisitely produced, in my opinion it brings out all her vocal qualities and the amazing subtleties of her songwriting. The good news is that she managed put together an awesome band too, so the live rendition of the songs is granted to be spot on. I wouldn't want to see her sounding like a generic top 40 artist, I think she's in for the long run.
Her album is actually really well produced and spot-on/solid. I know a lot of this is preference, but it brings out her good qualities really well.
Explain what you don't like about the way she sings "why do you sing with an english accent?". Is it the way she adds vibrato to "accent" to fade it out? I think it sounds awesome.
I get what you're saying though, but these little "imperfections" is, at least for me, a big part of the experience of listening to "Stranger in the alps". It's the dark, raw moments that provide this mysterious "Twin Peaks" vibe that Phoebe was clearly aiming for. I love how the melodies and harmony are met with a various contrast in certain songs. This is only my opinion ofc, and it hards to determine what's actual flaws in production and what's conscious, experimental details.
I love how the piano does a little edgy, off key thing. She's a fucking jewel.
How funny would it be if someone tired to impersonate Conor’s voice for his parts
thats conor obersts guitar.....ahhh
I think they're a thing now... SCANDALOUS.
Ethereal
"Promising"? Really? Try "Fulfilling"!
That drummer looks so much like Jon LaJoie it's crazy lol
that’s my bae
Ft. Jesse Pinkman
civil ian reserve. I cant do it alone. that's nai not artificial intelligence. I had no choice, I was fourthed two two
i personally wish that Conor Oberst and (I think) Ryan Adams didn't sing on the record. I don't think their voices work well with phoebe's. Their voices are almost too upfront sounding compared to Phoebe's voice that seems to float above. I prefer ethan's voice and i think their vocals work well together. He's on her Tiny Desk Performance and also recorded most of the instruments on the album it seems.
Considering Motion Sickness is about Adams, and the attitude in the song is less-than-friendly, I'm fairly sure he doesn't sing on the album haha. If you're referring to the male vocals on the album version of Killer, it's an uncredited vocalist.
i don't think it's about ryan adams considering the fact that, 1. she's been dating the drummer in this video during the recording of her EP and to my knowledge she was only picked up by ryan adams on his imprint.
but yeah i was referring to killer. through some research i found that the male vocals on killer is "john doe" of the LA punk band "X"
@@A.lee1312 Motion Sickness is about Ryan Adams. She's confirmed this in a couple of interviews.
Alex Lee I guess you won’t like the new album Phoebe and Conor just made together.
Better Oblivion Community Center!
Conners voice is uncomfortable to me. How are so many people disagreeing with that, I think this guy feeding into phoebes soft and dreamy pitches is so much easily to my ears.
🙄 the backup singer? 🙄 uhm. That was just a bit odd. He must not really sing much. I bet he was hesitant
Edit: 😂😂😂😂😂 even more baffling this guy here is light years better than Conor??
nah conor wayyyy better
Wtf
