Lost Triumphal Arches of New York City (“Temporary” Structures) Victorious Architecture of Manhattan

  • Howdy. Today we will look at three lost (considered temporary) triumphal arches that existed in New York City over one hundred years ago. Each was seemingly modeled after an earlier ancient Roman design, and one of these arches was actually rebuilt and made permanent, and still exists in Manhattan today.
    We will look exclusively at the photographs of the Temporary Victory Arches of New York City, taken in the few short months they existed, including The Washington Arch (temporary structure built 1889, made permanent 1891), The Dewey Arch (built 1899, demolished 1900), and The Victory Arch (built 1918, demolished 1920). We will also cover a brief current narrative summary of each. I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas about these Lost Arches of Manhattan down below!

    Dang, i watched the newest Ghost Busters movie last night. At the end as they exit the "old" firestation. They pass underneath the huge door, the camera pans just enough not to see the brown bricks... it just looks like,(for a split second) they are passing under an arc di triumphe

      You guys should vote…..dramatically better. New York has destroyed so much amazing architecture it’s astounding. And the current female mayor is now I believe trying to make it legal to hold anyone based on a very vague premise indefinitely. At least some art deco is coming back across the country now.

      PS: passing under arch(portal) is a ritual. What is interesting, they always throw back to ancient Rome, which is probably their invention too. Emperor this and Emperor that, while NorAm is supposed to be the "newly discovered" world.
      At this point, I don't believe anything in any of the official accounts.

    I remember searching the web for my birthdate a long time ago and reading a fact about a yearly occurrence event in New York City. It said that the city was built on a grid so the that the sun would shine down the streets perfectly for just this once-a-year sunshine event. I can't see the underside of the arch too well, but it does have an interesting something going on. 0:22 that concrete pilar base is holding up a massive pole of some sort that seems to be hard to find in the other photos. 4:22 the arch has something black on top of it that looks to be giant and missing in the other photos. 6:03 I asked myself, why would they write on the photo like that really and on the front? Well, maybe they wanted a French Admiral named DeweV to sound like a southern gentleman named Dewey. The Y in OLYMPIA clearly shows the font type as well does the V in REVIEW. Admiral

    I worked nearby to the 23rd Street arches, and never knew about them. But somehow I thought that the area right next to Madison Square Park where 5th Ave and Broadway meet was always strange; it's very wide open and has a strange little monument (that obelisk) which I'm assuming is the last little remaining reference to one of these plaster arches. The famous flatiron building was built in 1904, so it was there before the 2nd arch, but the whole landscape must have been so cluttered with those early skyscrapers and those immense arches. Also there was Madison Square Garden nearby, as I understand, and some other fancy restaurants where the famous "crime of the century"; the murder of Stanford White the architect, took place. Yes, a remarkable place 120 years ago.

    Triumphant (Victorious) Arches were always built to commemorate Victories. Those New York arches were no different, and they were built by the previous civilization, not ours, to commemorate victories in battles and wars we have no knowledge on. America was part of the same World as Europe, Asia, or Australia. Will definitely find out who were the saviors, and who were the aggressors.

    • @ComeAlongKay
      @ComeAlongKay Před 13 dny +1

      What are you talking about? They were definitely built by Americans. Also how would we have no knowledge of the victories they were celebrating? Also rather than the woke paradigm of victims vs oppressors or saviors vs aggressors pretty much everyone at one point was a victim and at another was an aggressor. It’s stupidly overly simplistic to define it otherwise. The only reason a group wasn’t an ‘aggressor’ is because they were too weak and not advanced enough to have the power to do so. It’s very unlikely they were just too good and moral to be an ‘aggressor’ as basically everyone who got power used it to get stuff and rule. Native Americans absolutely slaughtered each other for hunting grounds all the time. And they fully murdered I mean children the elderly anyone not of use. Basically every single human group was extremely brutal if they had need to be.
