Isuzu D-Max review - is it finally a Ford Ranger rival? | batchreviews (James Batchelor)

  • The pick-up market has been popular in the UK for around two decades, with carmakers scrabbling to offer blinged-up, workhorse pick-ups for the lifestyle market.
Their appeal is easy to see - pick-up truck owners can take advantage of low taxation and no VAT payments on a vehicle that's almost like an SUV in style and equipment levels.
In the last couple of years, however, the sector has started to shrink with Nissan, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi all exiting. It leaves few choices for the pick-up buyer now which is why Isuzu thinks it has a chance with its new D-Max.
The 2022 D-Max is packed with safety equipment, tech and a plush interior to tempt buyers away from Ford, SsangYong and Toyota. Has the firm succeeded? I find out.

Is there any way to reduce the engine noise? I test drove one and it's extremely noisy, the salesman said it may be quieter if i let it warm up first is it true? It's also very rough i was being thrown around a lot, is there a solution for this?

@@Ali-qg6sv try cleaning the intake manifold and throttle body as well, or check the timing chain tensioner, lever and guide, or the chain itself it might need replacing. And have it adjust the valve clearance. My isuzu dmax 3L. Has less rattle and vibration when idle, it also lessen the engine noise. You can barely hear the engine when driving too.

Isuzu specialise in trucks and heavy cargo transport vehicles therefore their pickups are solid and more reliable than a Toyota. They chassis uses 3.5mm steel whereas most pickups use 2.5mm. Their background explains the solid build, high safety rating, heavy load suspension tuning and off-roading abilities. Glad to see they’ve worked on refining the interior. Unlikely to stay at a low price point as their reputation grows.

They are way worse in reliability, and with this toy 1.9 it is for sure

I bought a DL20 as my daily driver, family hauler, and fun off-roader. I like it a lot, it's comfy and drives nicely much like a traditional body-on-frame SUV. My only criticism is the engine which is agricultural and down on power compared to other offerings, particularly when you consider the world market overall. That's not to say it is a bad truck, it isn't! It's great value for money and a great off-roader and practical daily driver.
Isuzu needs to bring the 3.0 engine to Europe or they need to hurry up with the electrification, additional power will make it a class leader.
