    I really appreciate all the content you put out. After listening to the podcast almost religiously for awhile I've changed the way I work, made a couple crappy films, but just recently had my first 2 paid short film DP gigs back to back. I've even sent an email and connected with one of the DP's on your show. Now I feel like for the first time ever I might be able to put a reel together that doesn't look like absolute garbage. I've still got a looooooong way to go but I definitely want to thank you for helping me get started. you the man.

    Thank you thank you thank you! This channel has been a paradigm shift for me. After finding this channel, the way I think of shooting has changed tremendously. I see why I have so little in my reel that actually represents how I want to be perceived. The path to getting the kind of work I want is not a passive one. But a very purposeful proactive approach that requires attention to detail with a vision for the end in mind.

    Good notes. Thanks for sharing! Pretty much everything you said resonates for me. The one thing I had to think about was when you mentioned a reel should be exciting. If you're looking to land high energy action jobs, I can see your point for sure. I wonder if this is true for those looking for slower paced, more moody projects.

    Became an immediate fan when my friend suggested I start listening to your podcast. I look forward to every episode. There's so much I'm learning and trying to take in all at once. It's crazy cool, and now that I'm living in LA trying to work my way to becoming a DP, this podcast is wildly important.

    So glad you are making CZcams videos consistantly now! Keep it up! Also, if you have any specific workflows, folder templates, etc that you use to upload and store your archived reel footage, I'd love to see it.

    It’s all about selling yourself. You sell yourself to a producer, who tries to sell you to the creatives, who then sells you to the client. At least that’s what I saw at Weiden+Kennedy. No, I can’t help anybody get a gig with them. I worked there over ten years ago.

    Loving the recent vids! Question about gathering footage for reels:
    How do you get hold of the footage? Do you get a copy of the final vid and chop shots out? Do you ask the DIT to drop a few clips onto a drive at the end of a shoot? Do you find out who the editor is and ask them to send you some stuff?

    • @cathyye3263
      @cathyye3263 Před 2 lety

      I always bring a hard drive to the shoot and ask DIT to make a copy of all the footage. I did run into one instance recently though, where my hard drive was no fast enough, so the DIT did not have capacity on his computer to make me a copy, what with all his transcodes, data downloads, and making a copy for the director, who had a slow drive.
      In general, it could be worthwhile to bring a faster drive like an SSD for this specific task, so it lessens the load on your DIT. I definitely will do this in the future!

    Great points! Updating the reel sure is something that needs to be done more frequently. I try to update mine every year, but in 2020 I did a Post-Production oriented reel (which can be found as my channel's feature video). Because of Corona of course - so I can show to clients what I can do remotely and what's my skill set on that department alone. I'm a one-man video production unit but I've realized I try to orient myself to post-production gigs more often lately. I want bigger projects but that requires a larger team of professionals so this (post-production orientation) might be a good direction career wise. What do you guys think?
