Pocket notebooks! That's the best way to capture all of your best ideas and remember them for later. But pocket notebooks get filled up. So when my pocket notebooks are all full, I abstract out the best ideas and collect them into a thick old Good Idea Compendium. You should try it too!

This is great. Too often people buy these pristine, Instagrammable little beautiful notebooks and organizers and they're too "precious" to use - No way! Use em!
Amen! They're tools.
I recently bought a box of inexpensive pocket notebooks with card stock covers. The idea is for me to not worry about doing it perfect and "wasting" paper. I just burn through them when I need to write something down.
This dudes the jedi master of the notebook industry "do or do not, there is no try" and this guys doing. Much love
Haha this is fantastic! Thank you!
😅
This seems like an awesome system for polymaths. Tasks, lists, lyrics/quotes, projects, drawings/diagrams, etc into the pocket notebook on the fly, then sift and sort out the good stuff later. Love it!
🙌
I like that idea. You carry a notebook on hand, mark down whatever is in it, and then sort it all out at a later date that's pretty great idea. I'll still use my separate super small one with tear out pages to keep on hand, but I'll also add a general notebook to keep on hand. Thank you for the great idea!
So glad you like it!
@ParkerNotes Thank you for making this video. I've been trying to figure out how you'd carry around so many different books to keep your ideas sorted. But man, I'm pretty silly. You keeping one book and sorting it all out at a later date, just awesome. Idk where my head is at some days. So here's my question do you have a favorite pen to write with?
I've started to use a pocket notebook and was wonder how to separate out the good stuff from the rest. Very helpful video that I will definitely use for future reference
Thank you! So glad you liked it
I use field notes / notes app to collect thoughts throughout the week and transfer the best stuff to my main Commonplace book. I still use apps etc for things like todo lists and calendar.
i watched your video about soliloquies a couple days ago, and i noticed that whenever i start writing, i usually start with something depressing or just boring, then out of nowhere my brain start flowing with confidence and joyful ideas, so i started using this as a q for whenever i need a mood shift. i don't know if this makes sense, but i works well for me so i shared.
You’ve helped me so much on my journey to better understanding my mind and capturing my ideas. I have 4 full pocket catch alls so I’m gonna buy an expanded moleskin and start filling it up!! Thanks for another awesome video Parker, keep being the amazing thinker you are!!
Thank you so much! This is incredible to hear! Great work
I sometimes use this method for generating ideas.
I take my old digital notes (I used to have them a lot until going almost all paper)
and then I scramble the lines using online service.
Then I put it into text and speech when I do something mundane, like working out in the morning or going somewhere, or doing house chores, etc.
Yes, the result of scrambling lines sounds like some looney stuff, but sometimes very interesting coincidences happen and it gives me enough spark to create something completely unexpected (at least for myself).
I started using a pocket notebook about 15 months ago, Field Notes specifically, and this video (all of yours really) are the perfect companion to figure out how/what to do with those notes! Thank you for this channel!
Yes! This is so good to hear. Thank you for the encouragement!
I found your channel around three weeks ago and have truly enjoyed your content. Also, and most importantly, I have been able to begin implementing a number of your suggestions for idea gathering, cataloging and implementation. On a personal note: these actions are very important to me as I was fortunate enough to retire in my late 50's and a goal in retirement was to continue to educate myself in the hopes of overcoming the deficiencies of my business school degree. Based on one of your videos I used an AI bot to design a course of study in Classical Greek literature. Keep up the good work, sir. 📓
Thank you for the awesome content man! You got me hooked on both philosophy and theology and I really enjoy them.
Dang, that's so good to hear!! Thanks for passing this along!
I really want to thank you Mr. Park.
since I started watching your videos, my English improved a lot and also, I can see how much I got better on writing everything in my mind on paper and separate them well.
I love that! You're very welcome!
Thank you very much for providing so much clarity !🤗
So glad you found it helpful!!
📔Love the idea of a notebook catchall that acts as a stopgap to be sifted through later and funneled into more specific landing spaces. As a keeper of multiple notebooks at the same time (each one in it's own cover as well), I carry around with me a tote with all my current interest ones (I have many interests) but when an idea arrises I then have to search for the specific notebook that needs to house my idea, which often can take a while. Your system is the complete opposite and requires only one notebook to capture ideas immediately. It's also a bonus that this one notebook to rule them all can be a dumping ground absent of any notion regarding self-imposed aesthetics obligations. The thing is the information itself and not the presentation of the information. Definitely planning to implement this system as an experiment and see how it goes. Thanks for the great content Parker! Your time and attention is really appreciated!
Okay, you completely get it as only a notebook user can! I'm 100% with you! Thanks for this wonderful comment!
Hey Parker, I love your videos. Nothing hypes me up more than seeing there is a new upload. Carry on as before! You changed my life and helped me getting my sh*t done. Thank you.
🙌🙌 thank you!!!
Such a fantastic channel. It’s a breath of fresh air to see some new ideas on how to keep and maintain a pocket notebook. Your video on how to fight boredom has changed how I utilize my own notebook and I thank you for that.
I love this! So glad to help out
I use an Exceed pocket notebook I picked up from Walmart for capturing thoughts and ideas - it's college ruled and I think I want to go with a grid for my next one, but I took what they had haha.
I also pair it with a Field Notes that I've converted in to a weekly planner and the system is working well for me so far!
📓
Thank you for the content you post, its quite inspiring and its leveled up my (and probably a lot of people's) pocket notebook/sketchbook game.
Also, I was watching the 4 types of commonplace notebooks video and thought another name for the "printed" category could be "distilled" (if that helps) anyways, great video, thanks
Distilled is not bad! Thank you!
📓✒️🤓 you're really helping me improve my journaling systems! I use to only journal in one notebook but I found that it wasn't efficient to have to read back through old memories and such just for one idea I remembered writing. Love your videos!
Love these videos and love how you process information. I’ve been using notebooks for years and I’m getting lots of great ideas here. Good work man 📓
Oh man, thanks so much 🫡🫡
Yesterday I found your channel and I'm already addicted to your content.
Binge watching all your content. Thanks for it.
Let's go! So glad you found my stuff. Thanks for this
Love your channel and it’s great to see how much it’s growing and how fast
You’re the best out there with this type of content. Thanks for all your insight. Good tip about bringing a pocket notebook to jiu jitsu in another one of your videos. OSS!
This means a lot! Thank you!
📓 Thanks so much for walking through your process and giving examples!
🫡🫡 my pleasure!
I'm already seeing benefits from this practice. Thank you so much. 📓
I'm so glad others find it valuable too!
📓 my new favorite follow. Love this channel.
🙌🙌🙌
Kinda weird but also wholesome that he is replying to all comments.
😅
📓 This was so very helpful. I've been rather stuck with getting started, (overwhelmed by the notebooks).😅 You have cleared it up for me, and now I can move forward😊. Thank you.
Awesome!! So glad I could help!
Very helpful video. I’m always trying to get the most out of my personal notebooks. Thank you.
I am really glad you found it useful! Thanks
Excellent video Parker. Like you, I find my 'on the go' pocket notebooks indispensable for my life. Thank you again.
Always appreciate your comments!
I just started my commonplace journal. Thanks for sharing. 📒📓
Awesome!! You're welcome! 🫡
Just the channel I was looking for, to start writing and reflecting on my own philosophy :)
🙌🤝
📓appreciate your wisdom! Just started using pocket notebooks and looking forward to it!
Let's go! I really hope they're helpful for you
📃 always enjoy listening to your ideas, thank you from the UK!
Thank you! So glad you're enjoying them!
Glad i found your channel. I do the same for years but besides going back and filling up a larger notebook i use google docs for the repository.
The only reason why i do that is for editing better to stay organized. I tried that in a larger book and the organization just gets out of hand for me.
New sub!
Oo this is a good tip, thanks!
📓 I have a beautiful notebook. Didn't want to just put in tasks. So I watched some of your vids for inspiration on what to put in it. Now it became my Good Idea Compendium. I owe you gratitude man
I really love the way you create content! Its deep but light.
Haha that's exactly what I'm going for! Thank you!
Please more Parker! Please!!! Love ur vids
Haha I got plenty more coming 😁😁
📓these have been fantastic videos. Even picked up some saddleback leather for my notebooks!
Woah! That's awesome! Thanks gorvthis encouragement
📓- thanks for this; I have totally embraced this system after moving away from digital notetaking.. I wish I had done this during my doctoral studies, I am definately absorbing / retaining information much better now... Thanks from the UK.
📖 I just started a simple bujo last month. So far I like it. Also started a dedicated commonplace book for books I've read.
Sounds like you're on the right path!
I've been collecting thoughts in my phone's Notes app. I will often copy and paste my comments on CZcams there. But I didn't think of transferring the good ones to another book of some sort. Thanks for the advice.
So glad you like it!!
I have a similar system...😊
My husband suggested that I carry (and leave on my bedside table) a pocket notebook for ideas and random thoughts that might be useful later so that I would have them stored somewhere for future use.
I find it to be especially useful for my CZcams channel ideas and home projects because I have a bad memory.
I love it! Crazy how a little notebook can help so much
Hi Parker! I am really enjoying your videos. Watching them I was wondering how your workflow would look like. I would love a video about how you come from reading and taking marginalia to taking notes in a common place book or compendium and how you then write a paper with your notes. This is what I am currently supposed to do so I am always on the hunt to see how others are doing it.
Thanks a lot for your videos!
Best wishes from Germany,
Chiara
I'll see about filming something, thanks!
It feels illegal to be this early
😄 you did it! 🫡
It feels illegal to have so many pocket notebooks (when I saw the sheer quantity in the beginning) but it makes sense now
FBI, open up
Bitcoin
We are SO back!
I’ve been trying out commonplace/pocket notebooks for a while, but I always find myself overwhelmed by selection in a store. Instead I make my own soft cover pocket notebooks! They don’t have as many pages as a pocket notebook but I don’t really mind! Cost of notebooks always makes me “afraid” to “wastefully” use them, but if I hand make them that fear goes away and I use them much more. I’m also more willing to experiment with page formatting on these notebooks and trying out multiple notebooks for different things
📓 Thanks Parker! I've been looking for a more integrated and orderly method to do this for ages! I've gotten in such a bad loop of working from my catch-all to an A5 notebook to A4 binder and repeat and I feel like I'm not gaining any traction! 😂 just goes to show i need to complete my catch all first
Been there! So happy to help!
I already know how to do this just love watching your videos
🙌🙌🙌
It's a pleasure learning how you organize your thoughts. As a high intelligence individual, starting a journal has helped me identify how many times I lean on unhelpful habits to cope with anxiety that comes from being understimulated. I'm excited to keep learning more, so thank you for all you share!
What defines a "high intelligence individual"
@@allelss-oh8sj Someone that lets the CZcams comment section know 😂
I just started following your advice and my notebooks have totally freed my brain from gridlock.
Luv this system for migrating and nurturing data man🥊
I’m gonna check out the podcast now. Word up 🙏🌸🦋🌱
Edit: Found you Christmas Eve… best present I got 😂🧑🎄🎁
Haha thanks so much. Glad you found me. I hope you like my podcast!
Being an investor, entrepreneur, inventor and IP attorney, words and ideas are my life blood.
🤝
📓 explanations clear and simple and helpfulnas always. I'm still trying to find a pocket notebook I like, but I am a big fan of Moleskine expanded for bigger things.
🫡 awesome! Yeah you gotta find one you like so you actually use it. I've learned this
📓 I do pretty much exactly what you describe in the video - and it works for me, too. Recently, I added an A3 Sketchbook for experimentation with analogue knowledge management instead of throwing quotes and highlights from what I read into some digital platform, never to be seen again.
📓 Been using pocket notebooks on and off since 2016. I'll have to go back through and try this system of organizing!
Definitely!
I absolutely love your channel. 📖
The caricatures of yourself at the frontispieces of some of your notebooks, do you draw those?? They're brilliant.
Ive fell out of the habit! Thanks for the motivation again!
My pleasure!
Another great 📓 video. I started using a Field Notes this year. I decided to use my phone less and it currently says I’m down 22% usage from last week.
That's awesome!! Good work
I simply keep my pocket notebooks and go through them randomly once in a while to revisit what I've written down. If something was important, I've probably dealt with it already, or transferred that idea to a relevant place, or expanded it somewhere else--a poem, a story, a post, etc. Much of it will just be mental detritus that doesn't warrant further thought or action. So it just becomes a record of what I was doing, reading, thinking, or preoccupied with. Which is fun and satisfying to revisit from time to time.
Totally!
You've inspired me to try something new. I bought my first pocket note book today. Let's see where this takes me.
Dangerous! You may end up like me haha. But I'm excited for you!
📖 I carry a field notes but I don't tend to use it very much. I do use a Midori A5 as a catch all commonplace book. Need to work on reviewing it more often
I'm really growing to love midoris!
That’s what I find with using analog is it’s easier to build a habit of sitting down and reviewing.
When digital, I think we expect that since our notes will always be there they got lost.
I couldn’t believe how many things notes ive lost in my past attempts to go digital. Too many apps and clouds!
📓📚 Thank you for posting such helpful, inspiring, and unique content. I kept pocket notebooks and constantly recorded my thoughts and ideas when i was younger. Youve inspired me to pick up the habit (and a notebook) again. 💚
I've done this multiple ways in the past, but the way that is best for me is to just take a mini composition book with me everywhere I go. They are not fancy but they work really well as long as you get the kind with the sewn binding and not the glued one (the glued ones turn the sheets of paper into sad, unfinished sticky notes). Everything goes in there so it can contribute to anything from the grocery list, an Amazon order, my commonplace book(s), or current/future projects I'm in various stages of. What's bouncing around in my head is often different when I'm at home vs. when I'm out and about, so I have a "home" notebook and an "outing" notebook.
I maintain these and their output as I go as often as possible, but hopefully once per week at the least. It might seem like a lot but I can blow through an entire notebook in a week. If it's a list item or full list it gets dealt with that day and crossed out so I know it's been taken care of. By the end of the notebook I'm usually just left with the notes I hadn't chosen what to do with yet, or if I wanted to keep them in the first place.
An option I had not considered until last week was to simply keep the notebook to revisit it later and peep the ideas that I really had no idea what to do with, rather than stick them in a Scrivener document that gives me no context to the thought or what I was doing around the time I had it.
For the last couple years I've been dealing with things digitally as much as possible so I'm only just returning to this system. It's more fun to keep it analog until I need to produce something digital from it. There is also a huge sense of nostalgia since I grew up without much computer or internet interference and started doing this nearly 20 years ago.
This time I did get an upgrade, though. I found a mini notebook leather cover and just ordered it to keep these usable and readable. I live where it rains a lot and it has destroyed one of these more than once. Additional benefit: the cover also fits my prayer book, so I got an extra and can take that with me, too!
I hope you enjoyed this short (unintentional) essay. 📓📓📓
You are the best Mr Parker 📓!!! Keep it up!!!
🫡 thank you! I will!
I really enjoy these videos! 📝
Thank you!
Yo great videos man - please share a philosophy favorites reading list in video form if you would
I'll definitely do this, thanks!
Have you worked with any of the discbound systems like Levenger's Circa?
I'm using a Field Notes or equivalent as a catch and then slowly moving all of my reading journals, planning books, and writing journals to disc notebooks. So far I have liked it.
The only downside is that the best/only leather cover I have found is the William Hannah system from England.
Just discovered your channel and am enjoying the content.
I really don't like ringed and spiral bound stuff. I know a ton of people do though
Great video! 📓 Organising used pocket notebooks (they're A6 Rollbahns so i keep all sorts of day to day stuff in their pockets, resulting in some pretty dinged up books) has been a challenge for me, so I'll try out your good ideas compendium system!
I love it! So glad you're going to try it out
📓 Great info as always!
Thank you!
📓 I use a pocket notebook. I’m on the field notes right now. I hope they are good to me this year. First time using them. Otherwise I have used the cheap exceed pocket notebooks from Walmart.
Field Notes do not like fountain pens but I use them anyway. I may try to incorporate Blackwings but. It sure how I will carry them. At any case, great video.
Thank you! Are you carrying a fountain with you on the go??
@@ParkerNotes I am. Asvine Fountain pen. I have a couple videos on it. It works well as it has a cap. Got it from Amazon.
I have been using pocket notebooks for over 20 years it started in high school and was cemented in my being once I started my Naval career. I honestly don’t know if there has been a day that I haven’t wrote in a notebook.
I use pocket sized decomposition spiral notebooks to write thoughts, grocery lists etc. Then once its filled I input that information into google docs such as a ideas container document. I feel that the review process happens when I read through the finished notebook.
🙌
When it comes to storing good ideas or research I have adopted the second brain by Tiago Forte. I use a notebook as a catch all and I have my philosophy/theological study journal but I migrate the notes that I think are the most important into my second brain. If you haven’t heard of the second brain it’s worth checking out. If you have a system on how you store important notes digitally, it would be a cool video on how you organize that.
What digital system do you like for your second brain?
I had just written down this past week to ask you about how often you checked completed pocket notebooks / journals. Lol! Philosophy of Mind (Reading)
Haha that's awesome!
Love the content man, i use multiple notebooks cuz of you, even mange to convince my father to use one.
That's awesome! I hope he loves it too. I just convinced my father too actually haha
Thank you
Can you make a video on understanding and comprehension. Like how to understand more deeply and how understanding is a skill we can develop.
Yeah I'll think about this some more and see what I can do, thanks for the suggestion
Hey Parker, what are your thoughts on combining a daily planner and journal into one notebook? Do you prefer separating those two or does it not really matter?
Totally doable. Really just personal preference
would you be willing to make a video on your daily journaling process/ routine? I am interested to see what a day in your life looks like using all these different notebooks. I use two on a daily basis (home and pocket), and then a third one as more of a diary. I would also be interested to see your storage solutions haha 📗great video friend!
I have a catch all pocket notebook that I carry around everywhere, it's usually something cheap, nothing in there will stay in there if it's worth keeping (things like shopping lists are also in there).
I take notes from podcasts, things that people said to me that I think are worth remembering, or I might just go for a walk through the forest and decide that I need to write about a tree that I though looked particularly nice 😂 anything goes really.
Then, usual, on Sunday (or any other day, I often procrastinate lol) I will go though this pocket catch all and then I will transfer ideas that are worthy of a longer write up and shove them into another notebook. My method is very chaotic so it's hard to explain but there is one notebook that is more or less focused on "self discovery" so things like why I felt a certain way about a certain thing etc, and an other one that is focused on "external" ideas, the more philosophical topics that aren't about me, that where I build arguments for and against the topic at hand.
Other than that, I have about too many sketch books. I tend to doodle when I'm in deep though, or maybe I end up in deep though when drawing.
📒 I have tried both digital catch-all systems and notebooks but I consistently find that digital methods do not stimulate my thinking. They record but they do not encourage idea generation or deep contemplation. I haven’t been good at processing and distributing my notes though. Good episode, thanks
I feel this same thing!
Great video📓
Thank you!
This guy is full of great ideas
😁😁😁
Sorry if you mentioned this before but where do you get the covers for your pocket notebooks?
Hey no worries, the links are all in the description
Excellent content Mr Park Notes.
Once a week , I am transcribing my Pocket notes, into my Commonplace / spiritual / language learning or Bujo planer. (4 books total).
I like to use different colored fountain pens , to organize each of my books...
for example I will use a Zebra Serasa dry x20 gel pen for my pocket book
Fountain pen with Black ink for my Commonplace book
Fountain pen with Brown ink for my language book
Fountain pen with Blue ink for my spiritual book and
my bujo will remain Zebra serasa gel pen & ballpoint with highlighter.
Curious if you, yourself, do something similar with different types of Pens , (ballpoint, gel pen, fountain pen) and color coding with different inks ??
Loving your content...keep it up, very helpful.
This was quite an interesting video 📓
Thank you!!
📓 Great content!
Thank you!
As an academic, how do you manage your references and how do you compose papers, articles, etc?
At which point are you going to have to go digital?
I have been looking for a viable analogue system for a very long time, but things like Zotero are just so useful.
I would love to go 100% analogue until it’s time to assemble/transfer a piece of work into a .docx file, but haven’t figured out how yet. Any advice on this would be highly appreciated.
Thank you for your videos.
I have a notebook where I work out my outlines and even rough drafts and manuscripts of papers. I add references and even quotes there. This is helpful for future reference too. I usually get it all in there before I start writing my papers but I will often rewrite the outline in a word doc and work from that and my manuscript commonplace book when writing the papers
@@ParkerNotes That's very interesting, thank you.
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you!!
Field Notes all the way. I always have one in my pocket as EDC.
Hi, what is that book in the background about - "Snow Crash"? The title caught my eye. Thank you.
Sci fi book. Coined the term "metaverse" I believe
Thankyou1@@ParkerNotes
📓 I collect notebooks( that i dont write in).... and definitely have a stack of scribble a5 books with stacks of random notes from talks or books that I'm planning to digitise into obsidian so i can find things 😅..... eventually.
Idk why it's so fun to collect them lol is it the potential that they represent? Whatever the case, I'm with you haha been there
📒 Thanks for the video! I have two little 4" x 5.5" notebooks I keep in a travel bag with colored pencils and various pens. One is lined which I use to write down art notes, quotes, and other misc things and the other has no lines which I use to sketch in. I mainly use them at home because I don't leave my house much lol. I go out about once a week to shop for food then stay home ... So I don't really take them anywhere. I like your ideas in your videos and am interested in getting more into philosophy.
What’s your goal for the future/life? Become a well known philosopher, author, etc? Just curious, thanks man! Love your work
Mmm idk about well-known. I'd like to be a very good academic philosopher and provide for my family through my public philosophy and theology work.
@@ParkerNotes awesome man! I see what you’re saying! You’d just like to make a living doing what you love. God bless!
Thanks for sharing. 📔

Sorry for my not so good english.
Thank you parker, because of you i started using the A6 pocket notebooks and even the bigger A5 notebook.
In the big one i write about the day, how it went, what happened and at the bottom i write what i should do the next day and a summery of the day that just ended( i do it aroung 9/10 pm).
The little notebook i use it for everything, su remember things acc, i am trying to use it in order to replace my smartphone.
I have even another little notebook for like really short books reviews, with quotes that i really liked or made me think deeply.
I am currently reading the idiot by dostoevsky and started to sympathize the existencialism movement.

what do you think about freedom? do you divide it into internal and external? if yes, which one do you prefer?
📔Just wanted to say I enjoy your content! :)

📓 I like this idea, I think I'm going to try it once a month 📒
Awesome!
I am interested in your Jiu Jitsu notes. I play rugby and am interested in the kind of things you are noting down, and what you do with your notes to improve your skill. Ive always felt taking notes after practice could be helpful, but Im not really sure what to do with them after.
