I doubt it was out of boredom, it was Davinci. All of his stuff has some kind of crazy meaning, he was obsessed with writing and sometimes even speaking backwards and coding. It means something for sure but we're probably nowhere near the mark on knowing what it is.

Since Leonardo DaVinci wrote in mirrored script, superimposing a mirrored image over his composition is not at all farfetched, and quite possible.
The main focus is always the people in the painting and thats just ONE piece to this puzzle. Everyone always ignores whats going on under the table and that theres a whole other part to the painting above the ceiling. “As above so below”

The problem with us humans is we're always looking for a hidden message, even when chances are there isn't one.
It doesn't help that the Vatican has a massive archive of information that it will never reveal publicly, same goes for the Smithsonian in the US and most other countries have similar vaults of information.

It took Da Vinci 17 years to complete the Mona Lisa. He was known to have been an absolute genius who was way ahead of his time. If you look at the inventions he drew and created, most are pretty much important things we all use daily. He performed illegal autopsy’s underneath the Vatican and risked his life doing so for the sake of knowledge so that he could learn and write it down. He also wrote almost everything down in mirror writing. In my opinion, the chances are higher that he did leave a message inside his paintings especially during the time frame Da Vinci lived in, when the Roman Catholic Church was extremely strict and killed those who opposed or questioned their teachings.

It’s a way to keep from paying taxes. Rich people who have massive earnings will dump it into art and sit on it. Later on down the road if they need access to cash they can sell the art for more than the purchase price. If they will need their earnings sooner than a year then they will buy a property and then use it for collateral on a low interest loan. Either way middle class and the poor are the ones who financially support our government. And the rich are the ones who benefit from government spending!

It has been for the last few hundred years that art has become so simplistic. Once upon a time a body could stare at a piece and see something new every few moments.
Davinci being a polymath and known for taking a long time to finish his painting, also known for writing backwards I wouldn’t be surprised if he did this to create his masterpiece. That’s probably what inspired him to draw the last supper and why it’s so fascinating without really knowing consciously.

Every painting that Da Vinci drew had hidden messages and the last supper is believed to be hidden musical notes.
