Holmes not having heard of William Gillette is a nice little touch.

Clive Merrison is absolutely superb as Holmes as is the late Michael Williams as Watson.

I believe the late Andrew Sachs played Watson.

@@complexlittlepirate3589 I think you're right as well. They both did. I think Andrew Sachs may have taken over after Michael Williams died of cancer. He was Judi Dench's husband.

Andrew Sachs as Watson (he played the Spanish waiter in Faulty Towers).

@@complexlittlepirate3589 "Following Williams' death from cancer in 2001, he was replaced by Andrew Sachs." So yes, here Watson is played by Andrew Sachs.

First transmitted 6 February 2002, this story is based on a reference from Doyle's short story "The Adventure of the Second Stain":
"You must have observed, Watson, how she manoeuvred to have the light at her back. She did not wish us to read her expression...You remember the woman at Margate whom I suspected for the same reason. No powder on her nose-that proved to be the correct solution."
When a leading actor is stabbed to death, Holmes and Watson step behind the scenes into a world of pretense and deception.
This story is based on the actual murder of actor-manager William Terriss by Richard Prince outside London's Adelphi Theatre on 16 December 1897.

Lol at 20:48 I agree with Holmes's opinion of Margate. God, if only he knew what a dump it is!

Nobody has mentioned the ghost of William Terriss, which has been seen many times both in the Adelphi and in the Covent Garden Underground station ...

Listening to the parts regarding Jessie Millwood made me think of Lila Rossi from Miraculous Ladybug.
Both characters are malicious liars, trying to ruin the lives of innocent people to hurt them and lusting after a guy who loves another.
