  • Tommy Searle had one of the most unique upbringings in the sport of motocross... He had no idea profession motocross was even a thing as a kid and his dad had absolutely no idea what to do when it came to keeping bikes going, but through talent and hard work; Tommy Searle became the most winning MX2 rider in British history.
    //
    Tommy Searle is a true legend of the game. He's the third most winning rider in UK MXGP history and has finished second in the World Championship twice, won multiple British Championships and did a stint in the US for factory KTM. We both moved to the US around the same time but haven't had a chance to catch up in person since, so this was a really great chat! Tommy is deep in the CZcams game now with mates Billy Bolt and Ed Warren and his CZcams Channel and Podcast are well worth a sub!

    Used to watch Tommy on the 85's and he was sponsored by Team Green, would pull up in an absolute monster of a motor home.

    Should make a movie about his racing life, I'm sure so many of us can relate to those early years. Humble beginnings.

    The fun factor gets lost with tougher competition. I stopped racing when I realized I didn't want to ride for fun anymore. The joy came back immediately. Every Dad ultimately every Dad wants whatever makes their kid happy, I told my Dad winning made me happy so he showed me the way to win. I was a dumbass kid . 10yrs of racing went by till I realized riding made me happier than winning did.

    this coulda been me in a way, also got my first weird bike at 4, then cr80 at 9, my dad had to make a custom link to drop it for me, i was hitting big jumps and pretty fast by like 11 but then, multiple factors, we never had much money, dad used that money in bars, parents split, dad never taught me to maintain the bike( he actually knew very well how, was just lazy), bike fell into diss repair and before i knew it, years had gone by since i last rode, i bought myself a bike at 17 but i had lost the touch by then, to this day haven´t ridden a proper motocross track again and definitely haven't hit the jumps i used to

    So great to hear stories like this from one of best riders in the sport. When I was young our family was poor and to save money i had to wear these ugly heavy AF hard wearing runners called Dunlop Supershots I hated them with an absolute passion cos all the kids at school would tease me when they all had expensive Nike air, Reebok's, Adidas etc these things were like house bricks and never wore out. To cut a long story short, despite these heavy solid rubber soled shit tanks I wore I was always a pretty fast runner in primary school but nobody ever considered me as one of the fastest guys which always really bugged me, one day in grade six the principal had the entire school line up on the oval for a surprise race across the oval and back, and on this day for some reason i decided to run bare foot which I'd never done before except at the beach and for the first time ever I absolutely smashed the entire school including the fastest guys in their expensive Nike airs, they were so pissed and made every excuse under the sun why I beat em. Those shitty brick runners unbeknownst to me had been strengthening my legs for years, and the day I ran without them was the day I was set free! Couldn't believe how much faster I was and went on to win several state level events and break a bunch of records, and it's all thanks to those years of having to wear horrible heavy peasant brand runners.

      i had another completely different but similar story,
      when i was young i wanted to play rugby really bad but the only team was a sub 16, well they let me train but said i couldnt play obviously,
      well a year went buy and i was one of the best attendance people so i was super fit and actually knew what to do, and started doin well at practice, so they would put me on at the end of matches for a few minutes, if we were winning longer.. again i went to all the matches, all the training because i loved it, so after a couple years of that i was 11 and probably the most experienced and one of the best cardios, so even tho i was tiny i was getting pretty damn dangerous even to unsuspecting 16 year olds, hit 12 and i got a growth spurt and was now decently tall and very fit so i played full matches even against 16 year olds and did ok, obviously my size wasn't great but i was close and my skill made me decent,
      i turn 13, by this time i was as tall as my adult size basically, and very strong for 13, i had grown with our team which was now the best in the region and had a lot more people so they managed to make a sub 14 team. Well damn, i was probably one of the most experienced of my age in the country as ver few people start at 8, i had been playing against much bigger people.... needless to say i was picked for national team after my first game on that team, a week later i broke my knee at school, never played competitively again
