These barriers are placed in areas where the danger that a rogue driver poses to others is extremely high and therefore it is worth trading their life for those around them. Also keep in mind that the collision shown was at very high speed, where it is very likely that a crash will cause injury or death to others.

    One thing that might be classified as a pursuit stopping tactic is the ram bars on the cars. They're often overlooked, but very, very important while pitting someone. Without the ram bar is very easy for the officer to also lose control. I don't know if that counts, but it is still very vital.

    • @ZYGTropicals
      @ZYGTropicals Před rokem +1

      The PIT technique in no way uses the the push bars, they are used as a battering ram or to push disabled vehicles off the road!
      The pit technique is done by the pursuing cop nudging the right or left front part of their car on the sides before their front tires and nudging the target vehicle on the rear quarter panel behind the rear tires of the target vehicle causing the target vehicle to spin out.
      It has nothing at all to do with the push bars on the middle of the bumper of a cop car. Doing things that way will only fail and make the cop look extremely incompetent!

    • @bm7151
      @bm7151 Před rokem +2

      @@ZYGTropicals I see your point. But, I've seen officers (Without wraparound rambars) get a good grip on the vehicle with the rambars and spin it out... In a more effective way, with less damage to the squad car. On the contrary I've seen what you pointed out. But, most of the ones I've seen involving the PIT to fail was while an officer was using a wraparound rambar. I cannot say 100% if it counts as a pursuit stopping technique but I've seen it work more times than not.

      The number of people in prison has very little to do with policing and a lot more to do with a for profit prison system.

      @jeffrbake Před rokem

      @R Hamlet the thing is, allmost everything you just said has little factual ground. Police aren't over here killing people left and right, that's totally false. Like all of that information is stuff you get from the most left leaning news sources here.

    • @jeffrbake
      @jeffrbake Před rokem +1

      @R Hamlet You are looking at raw information (that is skewed, because stats are easy to manipulate). You aren't taking into account gang activity, our terrible handling of mental health, the fact that the US is not a homogenous population, the size difference between the US and any country in Europe, wreath distribution among groups (for instance, statically there are more black people sadly than any other race that live in poverty, hence higher crime and higher chance to go to jail).
      You can't take a narrow look at an issue and have a complete picture. Like I said, things aren't perfect here, but there are not as bad as you make them out to be.

  • @bobthecannibal1
    @bobthecannibal1 Před rokem +2

    Retractable spikes are a technical solution in search of a problem. If you know what you're doing with normal spikes, you know that: You need to be ahead of your target, you need to set the spikes and run across to a safe pull location, then when your target is imminent, you pull your spikes into their path, then follow through by continuing to pull them off of the road so pursuing units don't have to do anything except pursue.
    That snare thing sounds like a good idea until you consider trying to take on a 4wd. (Oh, you *want* to get dragged by me? We're going into oncoming traffic. You're gonna die in a head on collision with traffic, and that recoil strap is going to part company as I drive away clean.
    The RF safe stop is all well and good until you EMP someone else's car, *pacemaker,* or cell phone because they're merely in the vicinity of a pursuit. (What maniac thinks this is a good idea?)
    If you want the way to *safely* end the pursuit, why not have a police UAV with a nice long loiter time, operated from the ground, and just watch the suspect run. They're going to have to stop eventually, and you can intentionally wreck them with an unmarked once they think they're safe.

    I've seen all these in documentaries before but in actual chases I've only seen stop sticks attempted with any frequency. Often they don't work because the officers can't always predict where the fleeing car is going to go and even if they do manage to be in place, the drivers often merely drive around the device. So the effectiveness is only so so. Also saw grappler used successfully but it's quite expensive and not in common use. Of all the others, I've never seen them used. The fixed barriers have only limited use as they aren't portable.

Not once did they actually have an officer or guard within eyesight of them. The helicopter was the only vehicle in pursuit, since the gate guards were not able to legally clear law enforcement to enter, and there were only a handful of guards on duty that day.

    One piece of tech they need is a tungsten dart deployed from a chase helicopter. Once identifying and gaining a positive lock the dart would be launched and plunge vertically though the engine bay destroying the vehicle's engine. The dart could be designed to penetrate and drive into the underlying surface or separate and shred engine components without penetrating.
    Or, with a slight adjustment, punch through the roof above the driver's seat... which would be a far better use, IMO.

Hence the Officer just throw the smaller spikes strip around the rear wheel of the vehicle, so that the Suspect cannot decide to resume his fleeing.
