      When I arrive to my apartment I can't be bothered to find a place for it so I just throw it wherever, then it would get in the way when I need to do something in the place I threw it so I throw it somewhere else. This pattern continues until I the thing breaks. Also, I don't have a car and my umbrellas always end up bent after wrestling my way out of the subway car.

      henrikoldcorn companies used to make things to last 100 years, you could pass your tools on for generations, with some maintenance. Now, they sell you an umbrella made of something slightly sturdier than aluminum foil and it gets all bent up within 3 usage times. Made to break and re buy

      Find an umbrella with a wooden core. I bought mine from a hardware store. it lasted me 4 years until the time I carelessly tossed it while open. bent 3 of the steel spokes that keep it open. it still worked for a few months until the center ring broke. 8/10 will buy again. :'(
      Used that thing as a cane in dry seasons and as an umbrella on extra sunny days or rainy days.

      This self defence umbrella is a useless gimmick. Try as hard as you like to make it seem viable is a pointless endeavour. Self defence moves are fake bullshit. The attacker just gives up after the initial attack and goes with the victims' moves. The truth of the matter is the attacker will use their hands to block any attack, grab the umbrella and beat the crap out of you for the aggravation. The only thing to do is to get the hell out of that situation as quickly as possible. Pepper spray will always be the best choice because it requires no physical strength or technique to incapacitate the other person

      @@tomatodamashi Hey bud. I get that you are a "master self deffence expert" but you missed some points in your little lesson here.
      A) People in many European countries cant carry mace or pepper spray. So thanks, teach.
      B) The umbrella isnt promoting you to go out on the streets and beat the shit out of anyone who looks at you. Its made to be an umbrella that is strong enough to deter an attacker if you are threatened and cant run.
      C) Did you watch Skall's video? For anything more then 30 seconds?
      D) Do you even know what you are talking about? Like at all?

    • @tomatodamashi
      @tomatodamashi Před 3 lety +1

      @@sebastianriz4703 Did you design this umbrella or something? Because you are taking it really personal.
      So what if pepper spray is not available, it doesn't take away from what I said. It IS the best self defense tool because it doesn't require any technique or physical strength to use, and it can be used from a distance.
      I never said I was a "master self defense expert", but I know enough about fighting that I know most self defense experts are full of shit. They teach moves to build a false sense of confidence that can get their students in real trouble.
      IF you even have this umbrella with you when an assault occurs, as I said, most people (even trained ones) will be so shocked and scared by the assault that there is no way they are going to use this stupid umbrella to defend themselves. Any weapon, including pepper spray, will most likely be used against you in an assault. People with a weapon are going to mistakenly think that it can protect them, when the best option is always to remove yourself from the situation. Standing your ground, more often than not, is a really stupid decision. Weapons and self defense training gives the person a false bravado and confidence that won't reflect reality. Watch any self defense video, the guy does one move (like grabbing the neck) and then pauses in that position to give the woman time to do her moves. If that doesn't scream bullshit, then you're either delusional or lying to yourself because there is no way a real attacker is going to be so accommodating.
      I've explained myself thoroughly twice now. I have nothing more to say to someone so passive-aggressive who gets so insulting to a perfect stranger who doesn't like a gimmicky umbrella. Bye.

    Hey skall my grandfather got attacked about 20 years ago by a thief and all he has on him as defence was an umbrella. He Actually decided to defend himself and the umbrella opened up and actually helped him massively. The Thief was trying to get into his pocket to grab something likely a knife, but the umbrella opened up, suprised him and my grandfather pinned it up against his chest so it hindered the guys arm from reaching his pocket. Thankfully some passers by helped him and the Thief was arrested and charged. He is a ww2 veteran too and actually remembered some of his melee training that also may have saved his life.

    Fun fact: in Victoria, Australia, you CAN in fact be prosecuted (technically, anyway) for carrying around an umbrella, if there's no reasonable chance of rain. The relevant law refers to "dangerous articles", which are not any specific, categorised weapons/tools, but rather anything that could plausibly be used as a dangerous weapon. More or less, you need to be able to justify why you have it on you if questioned by police ("in case it rains" probably wouldn't pass muster in the middle of Australian summer). "Self defence" or any other answer which implies intent to use as a weapon can get you prosecuted.
    This is the same law that prohibits people from carrying around gardening implements, sticks, hammers, crowbars, etc. "just in case". Strangely enough, battle axes, warhammer, etc. also fall under this law, because they're not on any of the more regulated "weapon" lists.

    Raise awareness to the fact that you are attacked! Scream for help, scream that they have to stop attacking you. So everybody around knows whats up and knows who is the attacked so nobody can get confused by the plain sight of somebody hitting another person.
    And if you attack, always go for the vulnerable parts: groin, face; if you are trained a bit or strong enough, add in knees, ellbows, hands.

    As a thrusting weapon an umbrella, even a weak one, is actually pretty effective... In skilled hands. The regular ones are no good for blocking or parrying, but it'll extend your reach by quite a bit. I carry a Blunt (brand) umbrella myself, which had a steel shaft that runs all the way into the end of the grip and vinyl ribs. Mine is meant to weather hurricane level winds, hence the flexible ribs, but it also has quite the heft to it, without being burdensome. That said, I live in Japan, in small town and in a nice neighborhood, so I'm not actually worried about people. There's a higher chance of being attacked by a feral cat or rabid goose than a person. I only bought a durable umbrella 'cause I suck at using umbrellas. Xp

    I’ve using my walking cane as a self defense weapon for many years.
    In general i habe Theo types:
    The light types for everyday use, in a fight I would use the for disarming enemies and maybe for thrusting but only as a last measure.
    The heavy types of my canes is what is says “heavy”
    Currently I own only one because it’s to exhausting to use it every day bea cause it’s made from ebony wood with a massive sterling silver handle...
    in addition to my technics with the light one, beating is an real option for this type and because of its weight it’s a pretty effective weapon!
    As an example if you have a cane or umbrella with some sort of hook an the handle you can use it like this;
    Grab the cane near the lower end, get with the handle between the legs of your opponent, hook into the back of one of its knees an simply pull.
    Your opponent will go down immediately and it will be an really unpleasant an painful experience.
    Carrying such a thing with me is no problem because I need canes because of an disability anyway. Because of that, running away is no option for me so it’s better ne know how to use what I have with me.
    But in general the best way to win a fight is to avoid them anyway!

    "the danger is over-confidence"... "prevent it from happening". I knew a guy who lived in a remote cabin. There were bears there. He said he was never afraid of bears when he was unarmed because he knew he would body-language/behavior himself out of the situation (and had). When he carried a gun, he was constantly aware he would stupidly use it and then shit would hit the fan (not in his favor).

    I was searching for something like this for use as an actual resistant umbrella. Unfortunately, the spokes and slider appear to be a regular grade construction and the footage has shown it turning upward like a dish... Yes, sturdy core is great, but still is lacking...

    • @BoojumFed
      @BoojumFed Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah. Upgraded mechanisms/ fabric would be necessary for the umbrella itself to be more resilient to the blows/ momentum it would experience in a melee situation, while this is designed as more of a standard utilitarian umbrella around what boils down to a fiberglass rod/ club. Doable and (probably) marketable, but that'd be an increase in price with a smaller market...

    • @johnfrancisdoe1563
      @johnfrancisdoe1563 Před 5 lety +2

      BoojumFed The market would be _larger_, adding all the people dissatisfied with flimsy umbrellas destroyed by the very weather that they are supposed to fight. It also ads to the legal justification for carrying their product instead of a normal umbrella.

    • @BoojumFed
      @BoojumFed Před 5 lety

      Higher quality umbrellas exist now, they're just pricier; leading to fewer people willing to/ capable of buying them (reduced market). Same deal with any product, really.

    Sending this to my friend who got one of these. Also, I wonder how well it can work with a one handed swing from right shoulder down to left hip, striking the collarbone. With the right biomechanics, it should multiply force quite a bit, if Kali is any indication.

    • @CuriousKey
      @CuriousKey Před 5 lety +3

      Any kind of decent swing to the collarbone should be an incapacitating strike for sure. Even if you miss and hit the shoulder, they're not using that arm in a hurry. 600 grams of weight and the force of a swing focused onto a small metal rod is quite something.

    • @BoojumFed
      @BoojumFed Před 5 lety +1

      I expect that that's going to depend more on the percentage of the force that is absorbed by the flex of the fiberglass vs. amount transferred during the strike than the raw strength/ technique of the swinger. A weaker person with a firmer quarterstaff will break more bones than a stronger person with a more flexible one. Not that I'd volunteer to for target practice of either of them, mind you...

    • @vytas5584

      In other countries, the likeness to weapons is a significant factor. What you're suggesting is "if given opportunity for a better weapon, why not a better weapon?" That's kinda the point, sometimes the better weapon just isn't available.

    • @JerryCollins101
      @JerryCollins101 Před 5 lety +3

      No, I am suggesting using a perfectly legal thing, a walking cane, as a defensive weapon.

    • @zeekeno823
      @zeekeno823 Před 5 lety

      Ok, why are you using a walking cane? Do you have trouble walking? Were you carrying it with the intent to use it for self defense? If the later, that's illegal in some places. How much like a weapon does that cane look like? That's completely subjective to the authorities in question. That'll also affect legality. I could go on, but you get the idea. Not everywhere is the U.S. and a lot of places have very strict laws concerning "weapons" whether or not they are conventional weapons.
      As an addendum, A cane can and will inflict more damage, which in some countries will come back to bite you with a vengeance. The amount that you harm your attacker is also a factor.

    The general issue I personally have with those kind of items is that they are likely used by people who are untrained in martial arts or self defence. People who are not trained in that might swing in awkwardly or not put enough strength behind the swing and in that case there is a high chance of the umbrella becoming ineffective even if it is an effective tool when used right.

    I've done it, with a regular umbrella. Single stage telescoping (It basically collapsed to half length) crooked handle, normal tube steel. However, it was essentially reinforced by having the main tube doubled. I got a couple decent strikes before it bent, I hurt him. 2 handed camp-axe style overhand striking. No joint lock, hooking, fancy spins, basically just like a short cane. It was better than being unarmed, I had better reach, so defensively I was able to dance around (Out in the open) where I could hit him, and he couldn't hit me. I carried it to defend myself against Rain. I used it (With a knife clipped to my pocket, but I had the umbrella in my hand) I broke it, and I won the fight.

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker Před 5 lety

      Escalation, it could lead to the attacker becoming more aggressive... He's attacking you, what kind of becoming more aggressive is going to change the engagement? He could pull another weapon: So could I, I had a Kerambit (Emerson Wave) clipped to my pocket. I didn't need it. You defend yourself. Weapons are tools you use, and anything can be used as a weapon. Cracking them in the skull doesn't have to incapacitate him. It just has to hurt. I think you really discounted the Reach. Defensively, Reach is fight winning. It's ultimately what scared him off, I told him "I can hit you," hit him, "And you can't hit me." Grabbing an umbrella doesn't really do much of anything.

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker Před 5 lety

      I've also fought off a bear with a Shovel. I wouldn't suggest carrying a Shovel to protect yourself against Bears. (I highly reccomend the Emerson Wave for self Defense.) However, when the bear shows up, you grab what you can to not get killed.
