Frankly he is my defensive player of the year. If the argument for Rudy is his team defence is better, then to me we gotta look at Rudy’s team mates. When he was in Utah his perimeter defenders were terrible, Rudy was constantly bailing them out. Now he has MCdaniels, Naz Reid and even Ant has taken a leap defensively. The spurs got Sochan who’s good, Osman who’s decent and Keldon who’s average, everyone else is below average or straight trash as defenders. Wemby should get it.
The difference is Gobert literally led the Jazz to a top 5 defense and to the playoffs with those horrible defenders around him. Gobert has him beat in every advanced defensive statistic he’s gonna win it this year
Wemby is undoubtly the defensive player of the year. It is not just statistics. He affects the way his opponent team's offense system unfold. Because of his presence and protection of the paint area, his opponent team does not penetrate as much and relies on mid-range and three point shots. It always takes away the default offense system of his opponents.

If it was just based off stats wemby would win but it isn't. It's never been that way and it will never change most likely
@@itshurtt395 But he literally does what you are asking of him: He makes his team good defensively. Because when he is on the court, the Spurs are Top3 defensively. When he is off the court, they are the worst defense in the league. Doesn't that make him an amazing defensive player? That the brings the worst defensive team in the league to be top3 just by himself?
Here’s the thing he’s ahead in blocks and it’s not only that he’s ahead in blocks it’s that he’s so far ahead in blocks that it’s not even close. Not only that but for a big man he’s very quick with his hands and gets a lot of steals as well so in my opinion he’s arguably more impactful on defense for the spurs than gobert is for the timberwolves which is saying a lot, arguably if you switched wemby and goberts teams it could be argued that wemby would have a even bigger defensive impact on that team than gobert would and that’s a very legitimate claim to make. So I say he definitely deserves to be named defensive player of the year and rookie of the year in the same season and he deserves to be the first person in nba history to have that honor just my opinion though, because gobert deserves it as well but wemby is just doing unreal defensively better than I’ve seen in a long long time.
So many people give validity to the league only awarding those who win and not those who actually deserve the individual award. Its either an individual award or it isnt, cant have it both ways. Either youre the best defender or you arent. If it isnt, change the title of the award because it wouldnt be accurate. If you have to bring anyone else up in an individual award conversation such as the rest of the team's performance, youve lost the point of the award and should reevaluate why that is. The fact people bring up the teams record as if that should have any weight means its become a group award. If you are going to take a team's performance into consideration, it should be something like "This is what the defense is ranked without this person and this is what theyre ranked with this person."
if you want to see just how bad spurs defense without wemby, spare some time watching them play against team that focus on scoring inside the paint. like Pacers yesterday. Pacers rarely go inside the paint when wemby there and when he's on the bench? oh my lord they be feasting inside the paint lmaoo.
even with wemby they lost 19 straight games. they arent shit. ignoring that fact is moronic. thinking losing 19 straight games deserves any awards is extremely stupid.
Many people talk about his blocks numbers but not about the fact that most of it aren't send to the crowd (and given back to the other team) : he often keeps the ball or deflects it to a teammate, which offers an offensive possibility, so his blocks aren't only defensive but offensive. This is something a large part of the other defenders don't do at all and it's precious, even if Spurs don't do well with the balls he gave em.
So they could be generous and look at the team splits when he’s on the floor to off the floor, they’re 8th in the league in defence when he’s on and last place when he’s off by more than 3 points to the team in 29th 😂 that’s crazy.

Gobert does not deserve this award. His team has better defensive players so of course their defensive rating is better. Look at the Spurs rating with and without Wemby. Compare that to Rudy’s on and off. Also, Wemby plays less minutes and still has more stocks. This is an individual regular season award that should not be impacted by team success.

@@xKeegZ I mean defensive PLAYER of the year doesnt really include team performance, Or it shouldnt at least. The spurs are like a top 8 defense with wemby on the court and are like 26th without wemby on the court. Wemby all the way
It's good logic. MVP is based on a player having the highest % of responsibility for the success of a successful team vs the other players on the team. Teams with multiple high level players won't have a stand out even if they dominate the league. When Nash won B2B MVPs, the team was rolling good then Nash got injured, they really suffered until he returned at which time they recovered. On the flip side, when Russ Westbrook went down, KD carried the team to the playoffs and ran off a lot of wins, doing better than they were with Russ, so it made KD the MVP. Russ won the MVP through media hype surrounding the inorganic triple doubles the team scammed for him by letting him rebound and living in a one pass one shot offense. Kawhi Leonard won DPOY because he had very visibly great showings against teams like the Warriors, and he was so far above even Draymond that it was impossible to not give it to him. The Spurs had one of the best defenses in the league and Kawhi was the main reason. You saw Lebron's face when Kawhi entered the game. If Spurs had the worse defense in the league, Kawhi's defense wouldn't have mattered. You can be the best but be in a situation where it doesn't impact the outcome. Likely you won't be awarded anything.
Even when he’s in the court, his team still doesn’t have the best defense in the league. Gobert puts wolves at 106.1 when he’s out. Wemby puts spurs at 112.1.

Wemby loves the game more than any other player in the NBA..You can see it by the way he plays..Offensively and Defensively..Jordan skills with Kareem height..He looks like a ringer against the other players..
it's not just his blocks at the rim that makes Wemby special. It's his agility and footspeed that lets him defend smaller players on the perimeter and use his insane length to block jump shots. wouldn't be surprised if a third of his blocks are on jump shots. When he's guarding you it's almost impossible to shoot over him and if you drive there is no chance you making the shot at the rim. He's an eraser.

I concur that Gobert's gameplay is one-dimensional; his defensive effectiveness dwindles once he's removed from his comfort zone. Conversely, Victor isn't confined to a stationary zone; he adapts dynamically, displaying performance levels not characteristic of a rookie but rather akin to a top 20 or even top 15 player this season. While some may argue that the Spurs aren't contenders-and indeed, no single player can guarantee victory-a glance at the scoreboard during Victor's customary rest periods reveals this truth. Consequently, team victories shouldn't sway the voting process. Instead, the decisive factor should be the defensive pressure exerted by a player while on the court.

But now Wemby in that conversation. Wemby is undoubtly the defensive player of the year. It is not just statistics. He affects the way his opponent team's offense system unfold. Because of his presence and protection of the paint area, his opponent team does not penetrate as much and relies on mid-range and three point shots.

Man I really hope Wemby wins it, DPOY as a rookie would be beyond historical
NBA logic: Players can’t win MVP because the rest of the team is too good
Also: Wemby can’t win DPOY because Gobert’s teammates are just better
Love your stuff, man! And yeah, he's absolutely that guy.
TEAM PERFORMANCE SHOULDNT DETERMINE JUST ONE PERSON DEFENSIVE STOPS !!!
Even when he’s in the court, his team still doesn’t have the best defense in the league. Gobert puts wolves at 106.1 when he’s out. Wemby puts spurs at 112.1.
