  • The Lockheed P-3 Orion, a four-engine turboprop aircraft, was developed in the 1960s for the United States Navy to perform anti-submarine and maritime surveillance missions. Adapted from the Lockheed L-188 Electra commercial airliner, it is easily identified by its unique tail stinger or "MAD" boom, which is utilized for detecting magnetic anomalies associated with submarines.

Had that Iranian P3 come within 20 miles of the U.S. Navy in the late 80's, early 90's, it would have become a home for fish.

I was an avionics tech on P-3s and got out of the Navy in 1975. I was asked by the Lockheed Tech Rep when I got out if I was interested is going to Iran and working on their P-3s. I didn’t go, but Iran was a different place then. It was a pretty lucrative job at the time. I ended up in the oil fields in Alaska.

@@Unknown_Iranian_Soldier1 It's pretty hard to release missiles from the bottom of the ocean. But I'm serious, those were tense times. The iranian navy got a little taste of what the u.s. navy can do and they backed down within 24 hours. No nation on earth has more warships, subs, aircraft carriers, fighter jets, attack helicopters, bombers, missiles, bullets, smart bombs, spy satellites, spy drones, attack drones.. it's simply not a fair fight for anyone.

Lockheed Aerospace Corp....the P-3 and C-130 were among the finest aircraft ever built. They've definitely flown more missions than the U-2 and SR-71...while not as fast or secret....definitely played pivotal roles for the last 60 years.

50 years ago Iran was our friend. Many of these aircraft were maintained with the assistance of former P-3 sailors. I was offered a job when I got out of the Navy in 1975 as an AX2 to go over there and work. These were pretty lucrative jobs at the time.

Because America sold it to them 🤣
That's not unusual. Pop culture makes us think that "good guys" have American weapons and "bad guys" have Russian made weapons but the truth is that people use whatever they can buy and American, Russian, British, Israeli etc weapon systems often fight against each other.
Iran also the only country that still flies F-14s.
