    I love how the transformation is different between the two characters: Whereas Lawrence’s is slow and painful because he rejects the change, Sir John’s is quick and seemingly painless for he welcomes it!

    • @wybub
      @wybub Před rokem +127

      It also makes totally perfect sense due to the fact Sir John's been a werewolf for over twenty years. Transforming every month for 25 years means since he was bitten, Sir John has transformed nearly *300 times* in his life if you do the math. Twelve months in a year, twenty five years. Sir John's body has adjusted to the change, and the fact he doesn't try to fight it means his body doesn't snap around as much, but I suspect even if he did attempt to resist it it would come smoother overall. In stiff contrast Lawrence has changed twice prior to this, but we see him transform far quicker in this fight cause he's trying to force the wolf out. Like that quick shot of him tugging on the back of his own head, like he's trying to be like "SPEED UP" to his own body before Sir John launches him over the piano.

    I love the connotations of his dad abandoning all humanity and fully embracing the beast inside him. His transformation comes with such ease and no pain as well as the fact that he rips off his clothes, the only thing that represented any humanity about him after his transformation. Whereas Lawrence's transformation is always painful and keeps his clothes on, there is still very much a human behind them yellow eyes with Lawrence.

      One must also consider that his father also seems to be more in control than Lawrence is, Lawrence is killed by the woman (beauty killing the beast trope) for attempting to kill her with the beast in full control. Lawrence's father on the other hand, didn't kill Lawrence on purpose in order to use him as a scapegoat for his attacks. Making rational premeditated decisions as the human and still able to carry them out as the monster. This is also representative of his father fully embracing the beast.

    Clothing represents civilization here. After Sir John transforms, he rips his shirt off not only to tell them apart, but as a sign that he has completely abandoned his humanity in favor of being a werewolf. In contrast, every time Lawrence transforms into the Wolfman, his shirt and vest stay on because he frequently struggles to hold on to his humanity.

So, the monster wouldn't just be a guy with some scars on his face, but rather a sort of zombie/cyborg brute. Frankenstein would have the brute power of machinery as well as undead raw strength on his side. He'd be far less likely to tire, and most likely stronger. It's ironic that in the original movie, the father hardly did a thing to help poor Larry because of Sir John's arrogant skepticism. He didn't believe Larry until he saw the Wolfman with his own eyes. In this movie, Sir John is the werewolf that placed this curse on Lawrence, He's murderous beast that terrorized the village every night of the full moon. He turned his own son into a monster like him for twisted evil.

  • @wybub
    @wybub Před rokem +7

    Love this movie. One of my all time fav horrors.
    The detail on the transformations is always gonna be one of my favorites. Other people have noted how Sir John transforms quicker due to the excellent symbolism of him giving into the beast, which also includes him tearing his shirt off to show he doesn't hold onto his humanity. Then there's the fact, if you remember it's been 25 years since Lawrence's mother died. In all likelihood, if you do the math, this means if Sir John has been transforming every month on the full moon since he got bit, then that's nearly 300 transformations.
    I also love the detail of how much quicker Lawrence's transformation is while still looking painful and less "smooth" like Sir John's. This is Lawrence's third transformation, and even when he avoids fighting it it's still new to his body and his body is simply not made to handle the pain. Our bodies adjust to repeated stimuli. We get muscle memory for things we repeat, workouts get easier as we get used to them etc. Same logic applies for Werewolves in this movie, and it's lovely.
