    Dartmoor wild camping with a lightweight tarp set up
    Excuse the wind noise! Something happened with my mic system. Probably didn't connect properly....
    This follows DIRECTLY on from the last part Dartmoor wild camping and is the last part - you could watch back to back!. We discuss the size differences in this NEW Trailstar and my older version.
    This new Trailstar was used last year in the Lakes and I think I pitch with the Cuben version last summer. I knew not was different lighter silnylon but only realised it is also slighter longer recently when someone was struggling to pitch it on uneven ground.
    There is a cooking video to follow in due course.....

    Going WAY back, to your beginning, when this was your go to tarp, it branded that tarp here in so ca. whenever someone is using this tarp, they are known locally to be using the tony hobbs tarp. The last time I came upon a guy using this was at gorgonio and just as a group of us reached the plateau and the tarp came into view, 3 guys, me being one, at the same time exactly, secronized if you will, (although complete strangers to each other) all said, the tony hobbs trail star . then we looked at one another and laughed. then the 2 other dudes said, her, your pharraoh right at the same time. ALL the rest of the people in the 4 groups laughed and looked a little spooked

      Hi Tom yeah I kinda couldn't resist the new one 😄 wanted to check it out. Really got it as lighter than old one and with old one I over did the sealing and that annoyed me a lot. This one being lighter and at same time bit bigger is game changer it's superb! Yup sorry about the audio in part 4 I don't know why or what happened very very annoying. Great you been catching up on the videos

    Thanks Tony. We really enjoy your enthusiasm. I'm looking forward to your cooking video. Have you made a pot cosy for your pot? They are brilliant. I can make a full-on stew with potatoes, vegetables and meat and rice, put it to oneside whilst setting up camp, and then sit down and enjoy the views with a healthy hearty meal that would cost £15 in a restaurant. Much better than the overpriced backpacking meals on the market! And a fraction of the price.

      @@TonyHobbs Ha! As other outdoors folk do I prefer an element of risk🙂 I put in my pot whatever I feel, usually broccoli , carrot, cous cous and chorizo, Bell pepper and with a pot cosy, new potatoes. I just gently bring it to the boil, put it in the cosy and job done! Those ingredients are admittedly bulky, but they don't really weigh that much, and on long distance hikes good nutrition is of course essential.

      I use either an MSR Superfly because I hike a lot in Europe so appreciate the universal ability of that stove, or I use a Vargo Triad meths stove. Both systems are great.

    If you check the dimensions the only thing that is bigger is the perimeter edges. Each panel is 10cm bigger which means that the new shelter is flatter or if you want to have a higher pitch with the edges reasonable close to the ground you have to have a very narrow high entrance. The perimeter is 500mm bigger in total but the inter panel seams are the same length which IMO messes up the geometry. Also either the new fabric is more elastic, or the cat curves are bigger, or the new seams are less reinforcing or a combination of all three, results in more curve. Look at your cover pic and you will see what I mean. You have considerably more concave curves in the new model and that results in less usable space. I sent my new one back as I though it was inferior to the old 30d one. I had both and did some careful measurements and made scale models and sent Ron a report. IMO the new design is a mistake. I'll send you the report via FB.

      @TonyHobbs  Před 2 lety

      Hi Phil did you watch video to very end? Unfortunately the wind f Ed up my audio on this one but it’s important as it addresses your concerns. Did you have and use the old version? How many times did you use this new version? Did you see me camping in this new version last year in Lakes three nights shocking weather? It was pitched on uneven ground as here was stable and didn’t sag with three days rain. I forgot the measure the apex to corner tie points in video ie when pitched but did at home. Hopefully I’m sure I voice over that it is 5cm longer from memory. Not sure how you reaching conclusion it’s same size. The hem is longer by 10cm as you say. And my bits of string said lol now I did not measure walking pole to walking pole tie point but I did measure at home apex where walking pole holds it up behave tony lol to corner tie points 5cm longer
      It was definitely longer not by much and it wasn’t exactly flat when I did it so I guess I could be wrong but 5cm is a bit longer even if m making error lol
      It might be little while before I pitch both but I can and will again.
      Also and I hope you not fallen asleep lol I explain about the concave pitching of rear most line in video. Please watch and listen again :) it’s imo due to low pitch on uneven ground with that part higher ground than the corner nearer me in photo. I suspect hope it goes on even ground with higher pitch.
      How tall are you?
      I had tons of space under there but I’m tom cruise height lol

      @philholden1636 Před 2 lety

      @@TonyHobbs I have the old version and absolutely love it. IMO anyone who has one should hold onto it. I set the new one up in the garden and was very disappointed in comparison. I asked a few well know owners what they thought and the conclusion was that the cat curves on the new one were too big. I carefully measured both old and new on a table tennis table, putting the apex loop of both over the net post and pulled out the seam and photographed it, contrary to what you found using bits of strings and knots, if you measure it accurately the apex to guy point is exactly the same in both models, the bottom of each panel is 10 cm bigger. This means that the geometry has changed and results in more difficult pitching and lower areas towards the edge of the pitched tarp resulting in less usable space. IMO this is a significantly retrograde step and I think you are wrong to call it improved. I found a number of examples where owners had very baggy pitches with the new version - example. www.trek-lite.com/index.php?threads/trailstar-pitch.9856/post-204388

      @@philholden1636 the guy Sameer needed longer lines did anyone tell him that and yes you might not get it pitched low to ground in high pitch all around but that is good imo as improves ventilation. Again watch my pitches and you'll see I usually have one side or edge higher and I mention this. I find it fine and useful. Longer lines helps a lot though.

      I thought it was obvious lol most silnylon MLD shelters have them for adding cords I’d imagine if wished for in strong winds. I don’t think needed but they added to most. Cuben shelters have them too but not the cuben trailstar but the panels are smaller I think.

For the tie out on the trailstar, I can see a piece of material has been stitched to the inside of the tarp to strengthen the guying points and was wondering what that material was? Is it the same silnylon as the main body or more like the cordura patch at the apex? Many thanks!
