Diesel engines can be hard to do a compression test on for a variety of reasons. This video describes how to do a basic compression test or leakdown test on any Diesel engine out there to check for major problems.

Small diesel engines like the 3024C/C2.2 have glow plugs. Using a glow plug adapter is a bit easier than having to remove injectors.
Hello good video thank you
Im your fan from now on
Keep up the great job…!!!
I brought my 1st truck and it has a 3406 (87 Kenworth). THANKS for teaching
Couldn't they make a fake injector with a threaded hole that fits into the injector holes (and that uses an injector hold-down bolt)? Then you'd just screw a pressure gauge into the hole in the fake injector and get a reading.
Kaon makes one for the 4 cylinders not the HDFTE
You should also make note that if the piston is on TDC you can also have a issue were it will not rotate the engine, just as in BDC.
Is BDC bottom dead center?
@@makincash3337 yes sir.
Wow, looks like it would be smarter to take it to a diesel mechanic for me..
Pure Gold tips bro. Your an engineer 👨💻 pro
Always informative thx !
Well that just went from an easy fix (injector replace) to a major job. But, at least you were able to diagnose the issue.
+easytopleez33 It is better to fix it right the first time than to replace the injector, then have to fix it right afterwards.
Love it brother keep it up
Hey Josh, been watching your videos for a couple of years now and I don't think I've seen a video on how to break in a diesel engine.
I'm an apprentice mobile plant mechanic over in Australia for Komastsu and just finished rebuilding my own motor for my Toyota landcruiser hj75 with a 12ht engine swap and honestly don't know much about engine break in. What do you recommend doing and the best way to break a diesel motor in, especially one with a new cam in it.
Thanks, Marcus
Can this find a head gasket leak
Great video sir! Do you ever use a scope to perform a relative compression check? Ever since learning of that a few years back, I've incorporated it into my regular diagnostic routine. Even when you don't think or aren't yet sure you have a mechanical issue, it's a nice quick check to help narrow it down. Let's you know quickly whether more invasive testing will be necessary. Keep up the great work!
Detroit Diesel has this integrated into their program Diagnostic link 8. It is a really handy to get a peek of what is going on inside.
great work per the norm tearing down a c7 going to give this a try
Thank for sharing your knowledge
Keep up the video i learn alot from them

How to take engine compression for Cummins QSM11 engine?
Could you please how to check radiator at engine
Thanks as always.
What air pressure you asume to be good to do the test if add too little i will never see the engine rotate if add to much i have to see the engine rotate or the valve is super bad is there a average pressure ? By the way you are good doing your videos congratulations i just subscribe
New to Diesels, I recently did a (cranking) compression check. One cyl was lower, so I did the oil in the cyl to see if it was rings or valves. Note to self: Oil ignites under compression. Buy another compression gauge.
Is the leakdown method the only way to check if it's valves or rings?
Mmmm I had never thought about that either !
If it’s igniting oil it’s got more than enough compression
Great info!
Great tip!
What a neat approach. Excellent presentation!
Thank you
Good stuff.
No matter what position piston is in there shouldn't be a loss of air anywhere is that correct?
Hi ? I like to make a question about my c7 because I think it's liking diesel into the oil do you can help me with that thanks!
I put my money on bad injector O-rings
Nice video
Can I use a bunks gun (wash down gun) to evac cylinder?
Does Cat use a cranking compression test? Or just a leak down test?
Sorry for being dumb.....am I right in saying that as its a pushrod 3ngine....that the timing will be ok?.......is this OK to do on DOHC...thanks buddy
Does bad diesel engine compression always results oil consumption (burning) ?! If oil level is ok compression should be ok as well, right?!
Will your channel help me with frieghtliner?
Sherlock Holmes, NICE JOB
This is never fun on a diesel, hence the blowby check
But what a bad head gasket do the same thing nothing to do with the valves but leaking air to another cylinder . I got a deutz 2011 2-cylinder. And everything is backwards on it number one cylinders work the flywheel headsets anyway I'm guessing it's a head gasket I was just seeing what your opinion was
Can you help me? I need to know the hp rating of a cat C4.4 engine. It runs a large wood chipper. I have the serial number if you need it.
What is your take on diesel engine oil used in gasoline engines, in particular it appears that Rotella T6 is used in motorcycle engines. What do you use in your car/truck?
I use Rotella T6 5w-40 in my 2009 VW GLI with 220K miles and no issues yet. I also use Rotella 15w-40 in my 06 cummins with 229K miles and so far no blowby but I think an injector or more are going out.
Big diesel's don't use screw in glow plugs?
Not all diesel engines have glow plugs and a C13 falls into that category, It does make it easier for sure when doing a leak down test when they do have them.
Corey Regier Thanks Corey. Does CAT use a grid heater or some other charge air type heater for the winter starting?
CAT does utilize an air intake heater on the 3116, 3126, and other engines I can't remember off hand.
Yeah those engines have intake heaters as well as the C7, but no glowplugs... I don't recall seeing an intake heater setup on any other Cat engines either. Trucks in our area rely on block heaters being either electric or a Proheat system. Battery warmers are important also in very cold areas to get the maximum CCA.
These large-bore diesels have such compression that (except for maybe way down at minus40) the air heats up enough enough during the compression stroke for the diesel fuel to ignite. Of course, down at minus 40, it becomes rather difficult. The smaller diesels found in pickups, passenger cars, don't have such high compression, so they use starting aids like glow pins, grid heaters, any trick in the book, so-to-speak, to get the fuel to ignite in cold cylinders. The old trick of using ether to start a diesel can be used on a glow-pin-equipped engine, but the trick is to skip the waiting period for the pins to heat, and begin cranking immediately. Using ether to start a diesel engine of any type can result in serious engine damage if you don't truly understand what you are doing.
Thank you, but how did you know #5 cylinder needed a compression test, i.e how did you determine the miss was there?
One of the valves was sitting a lot higher than the others. He would of seen it when he removed the rocker gear. It's called valve recession, not uncommon on CAT engines.
He also would of noticed no valve clearance on that that rocker arm. No free play between the arm and valve bridge
how did the valve become recessed into the head like that?
+Robert Large The Valve Seat failed, it happens sometimes.
Hey I have a question I really really hope you can help me with I haven't been able to solve this. 275 horse 3116 over heats water pump works radiator ok Louie thanks
+Lucio Scaringi I guess all the standard questions first. Are your thermostats opening? Have you tested the radiator cap? Have your done a bottle to test for a cracked head?
I know this is off the subject but I just put a fuel pressure gauge on to test it and it's showing 60psi at idle. Is that too low? Also the gauge bled off fast and I have problems starting it sometimes esspecaly if it's cold or if you don't keep your foot on the fuel pedal while starting. What do you think?
Thanks
It's a c15 6nz too. Sorry
tnsportsman21 60psi is way to low just a normal gas engine gets 199psi well thats for my motorcycle diesles need more compression
What's the middle of the dash gauge say?
Omg diesel engines seem like a pain
The opposite. There ignition system is also their fuel system. Noi coil packs spark plugs throttle bodys with iac sensors in tank fuel pumps to wear out. Older diesels are all mechanical . Very simple to work on . Allot easier then modern cars once you understand them.
@@markrich3271 if it's so simple then why doesn't everyone fix their own junk.
@@juanfo7307 They do. People who work on thier own gas engines also work thier own diesels.
@@markrich3271 simple for those willing to put in the time and effort to learn. Not so simple for the vast majority of sheep
To improve your viewers and subscriptions you need to stop talking into your microphone and at least have an engine in front of you something to make it more easier on the eye
Although not perfect, I have found his videos to be very informative. This type of education is incredible compared to 10 or 20 years ago and I really appreciate him taking the time to make them.
Daniel Thompson absolutely no doubt just my opinion
why don't you make your videos as you please? don't like? don't watch!!
Where are your videos? We are still waiting 😮
You just have the trashy videos 😂😂😂😂
