That's 49-year-old Joan Sutherland singing SICK for you. Believe it or not, she was not in her best days regarding her health and vocal form, and yet she nails it and caps it with a Nilsson-esque High D-flat (but with virtuosic fioritura added). Man, the woman was definitley otherworldly.

i do believe that in her later years she could have sung wagner. she mostly stuck to the repertory she became famous with. but i really do believe with a proper vocal re-orientation she could have made it. and not just barely make it. she could have been a slayer in wagner, hearing the monumental vocal size she possessed later on.
more focus on diction and compromising maybe the ultra agility and super high range a bit, and she could have sung it very, very well. i am sure of that.

Sutherland was and IS my first love to opera and her complete Stuart recording my first opera. So this dificult aria is very special to me. Brava Sutherland, Elkins and bravo Bonynge. Thank you.

Sutherland's agility in this aria, and so many others, is phenomenal.

No puedo creer el caudal de voz q tenía Dame Sutherland, esa nota final es como un rayo que lo atraviesa todo, la orquesta la mira con admiración, que voz tan impresionante. Gracias por el video, me suscribo. La Stupenda Joan Sutherland

It sounds like Joan could’ve spent the whole summer on that high-D.
The smiling concertmaster 13:36 was Erich Gruenberg, who had a pretty remarkable career too. It’s worth a quick reading about him.

the dome of sound and sheer volume and overtone spectrum she was able to channel and project, even in her top range, was just mind blowing.
    all the coloratura fireworks aside.
her stream of sound on that final note alone is world class.

Phenomenal singing! This recording captures well how she sounded live at Covent Garden. I guess we shan't hear her like ever again.

Margreta Elkins AM (born Margaret Ann Enid Geater; 16 October 1930 - 1 April 2009) was a great artist. How gracious to appear here to sing a few notes along her friend and colleague. Bravissime!

Not only gracious, Margreta Elkins was one of Australia's best singers of the last century, and among the top mezzos of her day. Internationally. She made numerous recordings, appeared in concert with Caballlé as well as Sutherland, and in opera houses everywhere, and again with Sutherland in their well-known television Bell telephone hour in the USA.
As did all Australian performers here, Elkins, who was from Queensland, donated her services for this charity concert at the time of Cyclone Tracey which had devastated Darwin, Australia.

I was so lucky to have met and been coached by Greta Elkins at the Queensland Conservatorium in the late 80s and early 90s she was beyond lovely and supportive of young artists and an all round beautiful human being ❤

@@matthenrick5531 You were indeed lucky! She was a celebrated Australian singer who was admired & acknowledged more abroad than she was at home. Internationally, she had a powerful, unique sound and was sought after as one of the great mezzo's of her day. Australia was lucky that she preferred to live "at home" in Queensland, rather than pursue an international lifestyle.

she was indeed a marvelous mezzo soprano in her own right, a very rich and colorful voice

Like all of us. I've watched many videos of Dame Joan and am astounded every time. I wish I could have seen her. (I did see her chum Marilyn Horne 4 times in recital--even escorted her to her car on a rainy night after her recital in New Haven CT around 1987) but never got to see the two of them live.
