This is one of my favourite performances of this great symphony. It shows Giulini as one of supreme interpreters of Brahms.Thank you very much for sharing this priceless gem.
One of the finest rendition of this great symphony of Johannes Brahms conducted by Maestro Guilini with warmth, power and complete command.
My humble tributes to his memory today on the occasion of his 17th death anniversary today .
I add mine, a wonderful conductor and beautiful human being.

I first heard this symphony in 1972 and was completely enchanted by it! So much so that I have probably played it at least once a week since then!! The most beautiful work ever!
This warm, rich, mellow performance comes from the years when Giulini was at the height of his powers. The tempos may be slow by metronome, but the performance is moving in every sense of the word: the phrasing, the transparent sound, and the emotional intensity make it completely absorbing. Giulini and the Concertgebouw had a great deal of experience with each other, and they certainly are on the same page here.

And, this fourth also the best symphony of maybe the whole 19th century. Beethoven's Ninth ? Yes, but the finale of the work here is unsurpassed and the whole composition is filled with music history. 'Abschied Sinfonie' and a salute to Brahms' predecessors. Agreeing, Jacques ? I am so happy you, as a Dutchman like me, consider the (R)CO of 1979 as to be already the best of the world, not just since this century started. The finale and its tidal passacaglia is TOTALLY REMARKABLE. An "inconsolable" symphony from the greatest symphonic master since his hero Beethoven ("standing on the shoulders of giants" is what Brahms said). The searing strings here are heartbreaking.

Giulini is at his best in German repertoire.
The tempi are wonderfully rendered here. Giulini breath with the sound of Brahms. He is in the same path of Celibidache with a tremendous transcendental anticipation of sounds and tensions. Giulini has incredible concentration which establishes a communicative need and a wonderful impulse of energy. A true and unique musical experience. Thank you for this video!

Une des meilleures interprétations que j'aie entendu de cette oeuvre.
Realmente realización imponente de la cuarta brahmsiana por uno de sus más grandes servidores (sabido es que debutó en 1944 con esta sinfonía). De entre sus tres grabaciones (la de Viena -abril de 1989, en vivo) más el concierto de la Asunción del Festival de Salzburgo 1989, ésta con el Concertgebouw me ha parecido superior a todas... final de grandeza y arrojo en el 1 movimiento, canto mesurado sin ensimismarse el 2, mayor agilidad en el tercero y progresión
inexorable en la pasacaglia (acaba en completa tragedia, decía Karajan).

Es de una profundidad humana que te eleva hasta la trascendente experiencia de vida .
Y Giulini lo sabe.
Giulini hace que sus interpretaciones sean experiencias vitales . Gloría de arte sin máscaras vanas y casi absurdas de sobreactuación innecesaria eso es Giulini y la interpretación de su música. Lo que sale de sus manos es arrollador por su entrega desde el ser al servicio del arte y no al servicio de sonoridades de show.
Cuando lo ves dirigir, su rostro es servicio a la música, como pocos lo hacen..... Hay verdad y vibración absolutamente verdadera.
Y en esta versión de la obra maestra brahmsiana lo descubres en su esplendor total.
Amo la versión de Carlos Kleiber.
Y a esta también.
Esta versión es de absoluta maestría.
Conmovedora, que te sacude todas las células, las mueve, las revoluciona hasta hacer brotar lágrimas.
Todo brota aquí lo germánico de la estructura, lo Italiano de la efusión, lo delicado elegante de lo francés, lo expansivo nórdico y hasta la realeza británica...
El mundo mediterráneo y la majestuosidad de los mares del norte.....todo está entrelazado en un distintivo único: el ser creado por un Creador que ama la expresión por la belleza.
El barco expresivo que elige Giulini con esta impctante orquesta navega "a modo Brahms " con toda amplitud. Dicen que Brahms instó a que se construyera la sala impactante del Concertgebow de Ámsterdam.....
He aquí el homenaje más pleno a Brahms posible.
Gracias por postear esta maravilla de versión que no conocía y me hizo viajar por el mundo de la belleza más pura y acertada como pocas veces.

Consiglierei la serie di incisioni della seconda metà degli anni Settanta con la Chicago Symphony............

Καλύτερη ερμηνεία από εκείνη του Κλάιμπερ, πιστεύω. Πολύ καλή είναι και του Κάραγιαν, σε γρηγορότερο μάλιστα τέμπο. Ο Τζιουλίνι έχει πάντα μια σοβαρότητα, ένα βάθος και φοβερή ακρίβεια.
Giulini was definitely a great maestro Richard

Guilini is often the subject of criticism, especially when he was with the Chicago band.

That's where the beauty lies....
Even when even ten times slower a treasure of unsurpassed beauty + intensity, the orchestra playing their hearts out in a glowing + glorious rendition of this - in my humble opinion - greatest achievement in symphonic music from the 19th century; an opinion I am sure Giulini shared, as this performance proves me.

And the absolute best for this symphony is Italian too: Toscanini (together with Furtwängler).

Remember: Whenever anyone says "too slow" or "too fast" or complains about a tempo in any way, what they really mean is, "This is a different tempo from the recording I'm used to listening to, or the one I first heard, and which imprinted onto my brain how the piece is ostensibly supposed to go". You can be assured that if this Giulini performance were the first one that the commenter had ever heard, anything of Toscanini or Szell or Reiner would be considered "too fast".
