7th grade. 8:30 PM. Laying in my bed, feet up on the wall, talking to shorty I tapped kissed after school. Jojo coming thru with the " Shooby Doo Wop, Shoo Do Bop, I wanna Love you" ... Making marriage plans and picking out names for kids 😂😂😂 ... Youth is wasted on the young man. Beautiful memories though.
DeVante’s sound selection is top notch and the way he layers everything really well it just all blends so perfect. I would love if he had like a sit down interview breaking down how he made all the beats and how he wrote the lyrics for a lot of the songs especially from this album and the 3rd one because he really showed out on both of those. I honestly don’t care for a Jodeci movie but I’d want to see like a documentary or a podcast of some sort of them just breaking down their music.

There use to be classic albums documentaries that would come out talking to the artists and producer, and I would love one of those for Diary of a Mad Band. I have listened to the Feenin instrumental a lot lately, and some of the sounds on that are just nuts. The Cry For You instrumental is a thing of beauty, and I have gone to sleep listening to that on a loop. It's so gorgeous.
This beat sounds exactly *yesterday* !!! Takes me STRICTLY back to the 90s with Mary J Blige, Tevin Campbell, Brandy, 2Pac, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Warren G, Dr Dre, H Town, R. Kelly, Toni Braxton and more artists of that period of time'!
Devante Swing: Music Icon and Innovator. Love this track the dopest one on this masterpiece of an album. I hope I do not blow these headphones out. Lol!
can any music theory heads chime in on whats going on with these chord voicings? they put up in several of devante and timbaland's production - curious about the origin
Gospel chord voicings. The bass line sets the structure and then the chords on the upper range are usually inverted so that they have a ‘tighter’ sound. Being able to reach many keys gives him a dope advantage
I think it’s a synth guitar lead patch DeVante used. It’s similar to the one you hear in the beginning of ‘My Heart Belongs To You’ also, if you listen closely.

@rnbplanet2089 thanks for the information. I always thought this sound came from the Emu Morpheus or Roland JD990 modules (as DeVante was using those modules extensively at the time.)
@@wholesomed.j.aftershock5096 Yes, he used those, in addition to the Roland D-70, Yamaha SY99, and the KORG M1, to name a few. I mentioned Omnisphere, because I am familiar with the VST moreso than the other synths, and I have heard this sound used alot in mid 2000’s R&B. Hard to believe this beat was made in 1993, sounds so ahead of its time..
Devante is an undisputed GIANT who's name always gets overlooked
I heard that!💯
You didnt get the memo??
THE 90's IS TIMELESS🙋🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️
Thats because timberland was behind alot of jodeci music.
Yep!!

@@rnbplanet2089 You're welcome! I don't have anything on the first or fourth albums, unfortunately. If I come across anything, I'll definitely share.
Absolutely. Listening to these instrumentals makes me respect Devante's talent all the more

Can you please me what is keyboard sound for those spooky/chill chords that are the main part of the loop?
you can filter an organ and add effects to get that kind of sound

It seems Devante Swing utilized Big Band and Swing Chord Voicings. This may not be correct, but it sounds like it.
