    Thanks for the video and for the great teaching.
    If something else were in short the varistor would be in short as well, so it could blow up the fuse.
    Maybe it was because of the bad quality of the fuse, nothing special about it.
    --
    You can use a 70 up to 100W lamp in series with mains voltage to test switching power supplies without worrying about if something more is on short or not.
    A lamp in series will create a current drop across it, and nothing will blow up.
    If the lamps light up at maximum brightness, something is bad.
    That's a must have in repair business.
    I believe you know this technique.

    I just repaired my daughters PS4. She had a cockroach infestation and heard a *pop* and the unit stopped working. After opening it up there were still about 20 tiny cockroaches still crawling around in there. GROSS. After checking all the mains switching circuitry for shorts, none were found. Bridge rectifier was good, all the transistors weren't short, nor was the main filter cap. All that was dead was the main fuse. So I took the gamble and bridged the fuse with a single strand of wire like you did, and whalla. It worked.
    BTW There was a black spot on the board and slight damage where I presume the cockroach shorted the mains.

    • @SaiBruce
      @SaiBruce Před 4 lety

      Single strand of what wire????

    • @jtveg
      @jtveg Před 4 lety

      @@SaiBruce
      A single strand of copper from a multi core piece of mains wire. An extremely thin strand, effectively giving it a rating of around 2 - 5 Amps or thereabouts. It's only a very rough guess on the low side. Low enough so that if there still is a short the wire will melt rather than the bridge rectifier explode but will still allow the unit to run if there is no other fault.
      Obviously, ideally you replace the fuse with a similar rated one. Although the unit has been running on average 8 hours a day every day since it was repaired and still works.

    Guys, if you cleaned your PS4 and have a problem getting the PS4 to turn on or it turns on then off, you may have put the power supply back in
    wrong. Make sure the two long metal pieces are straight and not bent to where it reaches the power brick. Not placing it back in correctly also
    may make it hard to put the other plastic back on and difficult to put the screws back in the PS4. Went through this myself. Hopes that's the
    case and you too can save your money.

      Christoffer Denkert fuses are labeled with the mA rating and you check resistance or ohms. You can look in the glass of the fuse at the wire. If the wire is broken, it’s bad.

    Hi!
    The pfc (power factor correction circuit) capacitor might cause this fuse to blow.
    I opened one psu yesterday, very similar to yours, also found a blown fuse and all the rest apparently ok, so I also tried the "fairytale" trick:)
    So, I replaced the fuse and as soon as the 12v section kicked in it started whirring and only then I noticed the 180uF/450v capacitor was slightly bulged, meaning a new one was definitely needed a long time ago.
    Beware this is a PFC circuit capacitor, not a regular mains rectifier circuit filter capacitor, the voltage does rise above 400v instead of the usual 1.414xVac. I made a mistake and squeezed in a pair of 120uF/400v in parallel to try it out, it worked fine with no abnormal noises but I am replacing them asap with the original 180uF/450v one because the voltage might be in excess of 400v and I guess it should be safer to keep the original capacity value at this point also. There is one video on the net illustrating the voltages at this point in particular in the pfc circuit, in standby and full power on there are massive voltage differences. Not the usual rectifier bridge filter anymore or something like that, there is a coil in the circuit...
    Cheers,
    Hugo
    ( I am too old to see a obvious pfc circuit and understand what it does, unless it starts screaming in my face ;D )

    Hi i have a ps4 white light problem and need advice.
    So i traded a faulty xbox one original for a supposed faulty ps4 original from a person that fixes consoles that wanted the Xbox for spares.
    So on the day i got home with the ps4 i used my ps3 cables to power it on and it miraculously powered on which surprised me as the controller was connected properly using the usb cable.
    But i saw the screen flash black then back to the home screen which i didn't know what is was then it did it once more and was displaying perfectly.
    After about 5 mins of waiting for it too show some errors or switching off because i did not expect it to work i plugged in my usb speakers to the other usb port on the front while the controller was plugged in.
    That was when the screen went black instantly. I didn't know what happened and pressed the eject button and a copy of GTA 5 came out which means the console was still powered on.
    When i plug the controller and speakers in on my ps3 super slim at the same time is says too many devices drawing power something like that.
    So i think it drew too much power on the ps4 and caused a wlod on the ps4.
    Im trying to do a home repair with minimal tools and if you could give me some idea of what the usb ports could have shorted eg a transistor or fuses or something.
    It still powers on and everything but that was the defining factor i think that contributed to the white light of death.
    Any recommendations would help as ive watched a lot of CZcams videos and most are the ic chip or some transistor .
    Its a original ps4 with wlod 1116A

  • @r.a.m6211
    @r.a.m6211 Před 2 lety

    4:03 exactly. Bcos they want to exploit people by replacing every faulty console with a new one and charging for it. If people could repair it themselves then they would not be able to exploit them like that. That's why we need to choose a product that's open source, that's not restricted by the manufacturer, which is not hidden by the manufacturer.
    That's why PC is more valuable bcos it is open source. You can literally fix your own components in a pc, if you know what to do.
    But console peasants don't understand this bcos they think restricted access and hidden info is somekind of brand loyalty.

      60w its ok, probably you are not using flux or you try to solder large ground pads. But i will do a video about soldering soon

    I have an issue with my PS4 and im not sure what's causing it. I've been playing on PC for the last year or so and I've recently tried to set up my PS4 and play 2K. (By the way before i switched, my PS4 was working fine before) Once it turns on i can play for about 2-5hrs and then at some point it will randomly just turn off. After that i then have the issue where i cant turn it back on. Ill get the sound and the blue light but then after a few secs it will just switch off. I then have to wait like an hour before my PS4 starts working again before i get that' turning off' issue again. I opened up my PS4 and cleaned it properly, but i still get the issue, so i doubt its coz of overheating. Has anyone had this and found some kind of solution?
