    I’m wondering why the instructions for the skoo didn’t state to put a pin hole into the yolk to stop it from exploding!

    I have found that it is always wise to pierce the yolk of an egg before cooking whole in the microwave

    The microwave method is VERY dangerous, as it can explode later when you're not protected if it doesn't do it in the microwave like yours did.

      ​@@MrAustinpen power level doesn't matter. I've seen a few videos where they ran tests with all kinds of variables, and the egg exploded every time. Some exploded after being taken out.

    I had a microwave egg poacher from way back and the one thing that they were very clear on is you had to put a small hole with something like a toothpick in the yolk of the egg so it doesn’t explode.

    If you put an egg in a vessel and put the vessel in the water, it’s called a coddled egg. Only a cracked egg cooked directly in heated water is considered a poached egg.

      I was taught by a chef, to coddle and egg you put the egg in the shell in hot water for about 3 minutes. This is how they did it years ago for the traditional Cesar salad. No one uses egg anymore.

      I agree with you.
      The one thing that I dislike is that there's always a bit of white that seems to meld to the pan.
      Scrubbing that requires a lot of elbow grease.

      I was pretty puzzled by the gadgets that required a pot of water -- if you're already using a pot of water, what's the need for an egg poacher gadget?

      @@MM-jf1me I think there are a lot of reasons people might rather use a gadget than putting the egg directly into the water to poach. Some would prefer it simply because it's less of a mess, some would prefer it because it's more "uniform" of a shape, some might prefer it because the egg is less wet, or even simply because it's less finnicky/less effort.

    You should never put raw or whole boiled eggs on the microwave, they can explode like that. It doesn't always happen but its better to be safe than sorry

      Yeah what if the egg explodes like that right as you take it out of the microwave. Getting hot egg on your unprotected skin would be no good.

      I've got an egg poaching gadget that cooks 2 eggs in the microwave. The top half of the gadget folds over the bottom half and locks in place. Instructions are spot on. The trick is to use a fork to poke holes in the raw eggs and add a tablespoon of water to each egg. before putting them in the microwave. 2 minutes for firm yolks, less time for runny yolks. Perfect results. I've had it for a long time, still works like a champ and never explodes. I think I spent about $2 for it.

      @@NightBazaar Yeah this is what I was gonna say. I might have the same thing you do, or something very similar. I poke each egg a couple times with a fork and I've never had an egg explosion. I think that's the key, poking the egg, gives it a release of sorts

      Pretty sure someone got second degree burns from an egg that exploded in the microwave. Definitely wouldn't do it. Not sure what gadget you have, maybe it's like the one he has with the cover, but I wouldn't use anything that isn't' specifically made to go in the microwave.

      @@PenultimatePenPen I had to go take a look at it. Believe it or not, I still have the single cardboard it was attached which includes the instructions. It's hanging in the kitchen. It's called, "Product Plus Microwave Egg Poacher". Also, I said to add one tablespoon to each cup. But the instructions say one teaspoon. I don't know if they're around anymore or not, but it's very durable.

    None of those eggs is truly poached. Unless the water surrounds the egg, you've coddled rather than poached.

      I've never heard the word "coddled" with relation to eggs or cookery before, so thanks for teaching me something new! What's the difference between coddling and poaching? Tbh, I've never fully understood the difference between poaching and boiling eggs either; I mean, I know the difference between poached and boiled eggs, but I don't really get how poaching is not just a different way of boiling something.

      Well, boiled is cooked with shell on in boiling water & poached is boiled with the shell off, the eggs have completely different textures. Coddled & poached...pretty much what you saw here. A coddled egg is cooked in a container in boiling water while with a poached egg you crack the egg & drop the raw egg into the boiling water to cook it; no container. Personally I like my eggs cooked over hard, no water involved lol.

    You have to prick the yolk before you microwave it! A couple punctures with a fork, PERFECT eggs!!!!❤❤ love you❤❤❤❤

      Yeah, I'm terrible with trying to do over-easy eggs and they usually cook more than I want. I wouldn't mind having that third device to make things easier.

      ​@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValleyover easy, poached and hard booked are favorites. I can fry 2 or 3 in the same amount of time as that. I don't use non stick except silicon so my biggest problem with over easy is the occasional break from a sticky flip. Rarely do a true poach because the whites go all over

    Great video as always. It honestly drives me crazy though that those things are called poachers. A poached egg is placed directly in simmering water. All of these gadgets online are coddlers.

    The SKOO is steaming the eggs, not poaching them. The final product looks good, but to me, if the egg is not actually in water, it's not poaching. This thing holds the egg over the water, and the steam cooks it. You can do that with any stove-safe vessel nested in a pot. None of these things are actually creating that wispy, toroidal egg white you get with poaching directly in water. I don't think anyone cares, though, so long as the white is firm and the yolk is finished to your preference, it's a good egg.

    Poaching eggs is really easy without the gadgets. If I remember correctly, you do a really light boil, like 7/10 on the stove. Crack the egg in the water for 1:30 seconds to 1:50 depending on your desired doneness. You just have to make sure you do it in a non stick pot and you can swirl the water as well to prevent it from touching the bottom. You can do up to 3 in a big pot at a time.
    Poaching eggs should be cooked in the water and not steamed.

    For the microwave you always need to pierce the yolk first otherwise it will explode.

    I do eggs in the microwave all the time without any special equipment.
    I do an egg with a set white & runny - to - jammy yolk (depending on my mood) in a Pyrex custard cup: pan spray cup or bit of butter, egg.
    IMPORTANT NOTE:
    Always pierce yolk so it won’t explode!
    Time depends on your oven’s wattage (mine is 900 watts)

      Play with it - you can cook on hi if you do on & off about 10 seconds at a time, or a bit longer if you reduce the power.
      Covering it changes cooking time, too.
      It never takes more than about 60 seconds.
      But DO REMEMBER TO PIERCE THE YOLK!

      @@tessiree Just letting you know, that while piercing the yolk _may_ reduce the chances of the egg exploding, multiple tests have been done and found that it's not exactly foolproof doing that either. I know How to Cook That has a couple of videos where she talks about it, and I've seen a few different ones from different people talking about testing a bunch of the "methods" people have stated to prevent it from happening, and all of the techniques still were able to lead to an exploding egg. I would say it's, at the very least, still worth taking precautions for anyone still choosing to cook an egg in the microwave.

    James - if you aren't aware, you should google why you should never microwave an egg (what you saw was actually pretty minor). Something for future items - just plain never microwave eggs, it can end REALLY bad.

      I microwave scrambled eggs all the time. You just shouldn't microwave eggs whole, or with an intact yolk

    I think the first one is gimmicky, but the 9 minute method looks like a winner for it. The 2nd was definitely the best. The 3rd is an awesome product but I do agree its not a poacher.

    I reckon the microwave one might have worked better on a lower power setting. Like, probably the lowest setting the microwave has, and then letting it sit for a while afterwards too
    We used to cook scrambled eggs in the microwave in a mug when I was a kid. I think it was a “the kids probably won’t hurt themselves making their own breakfast” kind of thing 😂
    you had to be very careful not to get any shell fragments in because even the tiniest shell fragment will make it explode. Your microwave “poached egg” looks exactly like the microwave eggs we used to make as kids
    The whole point of poaching is that it’s quite a gentle heat, so a modern microwave on full power is never gonna be gentle enough

    I think each of those gadgets work good if you just learned how to properly time it and use it a little bit of trial-and-error kind of thing. And when it comes to their microwave you always have to poke a hole in the yolk so it doesn't explode but I would have to say the last one he tested in the microwave came out looking more like it's been fried instead of poached is his best option.     Years ago, I had instructions on how to cook an egg in the microwave, but they said to cook on simmer so the egg didn’t explode. I’ve done it successfully many times, but that was back when I preferred hard boiled to soft. These days, I just use a non stick pan and it slides right on out.

      Ann Reardon tested that out. It would still explode even if the yolk was poked. Even excluding the yolk entirely (or excluding the white entirely) didn't prevent explosion.

    Hi - Thanks for your reviews, especially these about poaching eggs. My two comments: (1) when our natural gas bill soared, I invested in an electric kettle which heats water much faster than gas. I was a bit concerned about your electric kettle because it boiled longer than necessary. Our Hamilton Beach isn't as pretty as yours but it shuts off a little sooner (safety first!). (2) Before cooking whole raw eggs in a microwave oven, both the yolk and white must be pierced with a toothpick so they won't explode. Don't ask me why! Thanks again!

    Btw there are ways to poach eggs in microwaves. You usually need to add a spoon of water in your whatever-you-use and break the yolk a little by sticking it with a fork. That's how my microwave poacher works. BUT I do like my water and vinegar method better 😅

    Eggs tend to explode in the microwave unless you pierce the yolk. A pinprick does the job, making sure the yolk doesn’t detonate the egg all over the microwave, without it being a ruined egg.
    At least I read that, the only eggs I’ve ever done in the microwave were scrambled, and didn’t use a pan when my kitchen was being renovated and only had access to a microwave for a few weeks.

      Piercing does not prevent an egg from exploding in the microwave. The problem is the supereating of the eggwhite.

      @@draakevil I have cooked a lot(50+) of eggs in the microwave and a solid pierce of the egg yoke will stop it in every time I have done it. My understanding is the explosion happens because steam builds up inside the yoke and bursts, piercing it allows the steam to escape.

Please don't try to get people scarred for life with such dangerous misinformation. Don't ever microwave eggs.

      Look up "how to cook that" she has a great video on the dangers of microwaving eggs. She also shows that piecing the yoke doesn't always work. Also shows the injuries the exploding eggs can cause. It's not pretty. Just cook you eggs in a pan

    I have tried a few egg poachers. Part of the poached egg experience is that little taste of vinegar from the water. The fake poachers never taste right.

    The thicker the container, the longer it will take. Also, the material of the container will make a difference in how quickly it heats up.

    When I do eggs in the microwave, I put a small cut on top of the egg yolk. It helps prevent the egg from exploding.

    Great review. The microwave certainly sounds more convenient, but not so great results it seems. I have a 4 pot one that I use on the stove. I’ve been very happy with that, but sometimes the microwave just sounds more convenient. Thanks for the great reviews mate. I’m binge watching whilst stuck here in hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

    How to poach an egg in a microwave:
    1. Take a coffee cup and add about 3 tablespoons of water and a tiny dash of vinegar (optional, but works better). The water should only be about 2cm (2/3inch) in the cup.
    2. Microwave the water for 30 seconds
    3. Crack in an egg and cover the cup with a saucer.
    4. microwave for 45 seconds only.
    Done. Perfect every time.

    I have an egg poacher like that flat one but with mine you put luke warm water in then drop the egg into that, put the lid on and microwave for 50 seconds, perfect everytime!!

    When I got my first microwave decades ago I learned from the cookbook that came with it to always prick the yellow of the egg with a pin or tip of a sharp knife, That keeps it from exploding,

    I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of days and just subscribed.
    I’ve been noting down each gadget that isn’t a failure so I can but later.
    I hate buying gadgets that don’t work as they show in the adds. I love my kitchen and cook for 5 family members that I care for, I have chronic fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and
    Severe bulging disk on my lower, middle, upper back and also severe lumber spine on both sides and slipped disk on my left side of my neck, where it gets so painful to look down for a long period of time not only is it painful , but also cause dizziness , light headed and out of balance, 9:22 So any gadget thAt help sped up the process of cleaning, cooking, chopping etc is great to see. I was dumping my money in the bin before I started watching your videos. Looking after 5 member of the family and driving around to them isn’t easy as well, cutting down on hard work has given enough time to finish a cup of cofee and going to bed 3 am instead of 5 am only to get Back up at 6:30am.

    Raw yolks are no different , texturally, than snot when one has a nasty cold. It’s absolutely repugnant, but I’m still gonna watch, & enjoy this video.

    If you "poach" an egg in the microwave, pierce the yolk with a toothpick. That does work but you might need to reduce power to 800-900 watts. Cook for 1 minute. Use a standard mug or ceramic ramikin.

    You can cook perfect eggs in the microwave. Ya just gotta remove it the second you hear it start to pop. I've found that 40 seconds is all it takes in most microwaves for a perfect hard cooked egg. Can't really do a runny egg in the microwave.

    Yeah, I would suggest avoiding microwaving eggs. Far too many people have been badly badly hurt by them exploding after being removed from the microwave. Ann Reardon over on How to Cook That has done a few videos talking about it, along with a bunch of other youtubers, and it's worth checking out. In short, people have tried all kinds of different variations to find ways to microwave without the risk of the eggs exploding, and have found that basically any way you do it, the risk is still there. Honestly, these gadgets should be putting warnings _against_ using them in the microwave, considering the risks involved.

    The thing about “poaching” an egg is that it’s done “in water” !! As in the egg is actually in the water not floating on top of the water.

    None of those poached the egg. To poach it must be cook IN water. Two were steamers. Usually called a basted egg or steamed. The third fried it. Fried it nicely, but fried it.

    I have had the Egg'Ler for three years, and you can buy it overseas. It is something that is one great invention and perfect and costs about twenty bucks downside takes about a month to receive it

    Microwaving eggs - instructions should tell you to pop the yolk(s) so that it doesn't explode. Pierce more than once to be safer. Good luck from UK 🇬🇧

    I feel like the skoo would do better in the microwave if set on a power level of 3 for 2 minutes instead of just adjusting the time. You might have done this but didn't see it in the video.

    Be careful about eggs in the microwave. No matter how you try and microwave them they can explode like that and can seriously harm you

      It actually works quite well if you prick the yolk and cook at 40 percent power at most(I usually did 30). I have done that many times without any problem when I had no other option but a microwave. Having said that, a pan of hot water is just as easy, and produces a perfect poached egg...no surprise, as that is how to do it. Why dirty another device other than a pot?
