    One thing not shown were how ineffective the police standard-issue MP5 was against the robber’s body armor. At the time, very little police units had rifles, most of them only having shotguns and MP5. In the aftermath, SWAT/police in the US quickly learned from this incident, and rapidly switched to AR-15 being the standard-issue weapon, which is why you see an AR-15 in every police car now. History is amazing.

    • @griz312
      @griz312 Před 2 lety

      I don’t think the MP5 was ever deployed because only the swat team had them. What’s crazy is Law Enforcement didn’t learn a lot from the Norco Bank Robbery and the FBI Miami Shoot out in the 80s. Both instances cops were outgunned against determined suspects with AR15/AK platforms and it was until Hollywood that more departments started to purchase AR15 rifles.

    There are a bunch of myths in the comments, Larry and Emil were not blitzed out of their minds. They had taken a nerve suppressant to keep calm during the robbery. They were total in control of their bodies and minds. As to why no one other than them died, the robbers were there to rob a bank, not kill cops. Their main goal was to suppress the cops with overwhelming fire to enact an escape. Had the patrol car not noticed the two at the start of the robbery, then they would had made off with a little more than 300k assuming the dye pack never exploded.

    • @kettle_of_chris
      @kettle_of_chris Před 7 měsíci +10

      "the robbers were there to rob a bank, not kill cops." I think that is the #1 thing people forget when puntificating about their motives, state of mind, etc... I will have to do some digging on the drug thing though. Nerve suppressants - not sure what those are in relation to what we think of as drugs/painkillers. Are they the same thing? What do they do? Are they similar? Etc...
      Anyway when this went down, there wasn't an epidemic of pain pill abuse like there is now, so any reporting of them using pain pills was in the same vein as the descriptions of them wearing body armour; the pills were just part of their "kit". The media didn't place any disproportionate emphasis on them taking is my point. *(2)* "Larry and Emil were not blitzed out of their minds"
      No one is really saying that they were blitzed. Just that each of them had taken pain pills & even back then, it was in the context of thier kit like I mentioned earlier. Some people said "high" [on pain pills] but that could be explained as just lazy english in a high pressure envoirment such as 'news' reporting. Which in 1997, was regarded as a lot more accurate than it is now.

It's hard to believe no officer was killed in the actual chaoic shootout, dealing with armored gunmen with big magazine full-auto AK-47 and other weapons while they had their then-standard pistols, forcing them to go to the gun store for M16s. That, my friends, is why police are the way they are now. This recreation of the gun battle is cool, though not quite 100% accurate.

      @TheNationalBlade Před 3 lety +13

      Nonsense. They began the militarization of law enforcement during Prohibition and they escalated after the first Gulf War. The impetus for that escalation has consistently been the War on Drugs. That is a war against the American People. The cops are the foot soldiers of that war sand Americans are finally waking up to the fact that the war is squarely focused on the poor.
      From the start Nixon declared this war to target his political rivals which specifically included minorities. We saw the bias of this when we compare the crack epidemic of the 90's and opioid epidemic of the last 2 decades. The blacks got longer sentences and more harsh treatment, but big pharma got fines, and the addicts got treatment and diversion programs. The crack epidemic was labeled a criminal crisis and the opioid epidemic was called a medical crisis. The difference is that the opioid addicts were primarily white and rural (Republican constituency).
      They better end the War on Drugs soon. If they don't they are going to see this kind of stuff a lot more often.

    • @kevinchester6721
      @kevinchester6721 Před 3 lety +3

      The.National.Blade though very well stated the ending is were you lose the argument. Saying that the opioid crisis is different because of a Republican constituency is wrong. The opioid crisis doesn’t have massive gangs wars in the street. The opioid crisis effects all races too. But if we would like to get political, the longer sentences are because of the Democrats. Also cops are not the foot soldiers for a “war” on the American people, they are there to keep the peace. If they were foot soldiers there would be a lot less violence and a lot more death.

      For decades, police departments have acquired military weaponry like grenade launchers and armored vehicles for little cost through a controversial Defense Department program called 1033. The program has sent over $7 billion worth of excess military equipment to more than 8,000 local law enforcement agencies across the country, according to the office overseeing the program.The 1033 program was instituted in 1997 under the Clinton administration amid pressure to bolster police forces’ ability to fight the war on drugs. It transfers the military’s extra or outdated gear to state and local authorities who apply for it, who are responsible only for the cost of shipping.
      Whatevers the reason the jigs up. As an American I never thought in a million years I'd see American military products being used on Americans.In 2014, the ACLU reported that police departments in Arizona had collectively amassed a military arsenal that included: 712 rifles, 64 armored vehicles, 42 forced-entry tools, 32 bomb suits, 704 night-vision items, 830 units of surveillance equipment, and, in at least one department, “a .50 caliber machine gun that shoots bullets powerful enough to blast through the buildings on multiple city blocks.

Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Mătăsăreanu did not jump in getaway car, but decided to stay at the location of the robbed bank, waited for more cops to arrive, and faced their deaths at the hand of the police. I can’t imagine the *real* level of fear, adrenaline, chaos, desperation, & disorientation the real robbers were feeling getting shot from all directions non-stop, regardless of their suppressing capabilities.
    I kinda wish they had been captured alive just for the sake of interviews & hearing what they’d have to say.
    The closest to anything similar to this gunfight would be the Miami Dade shootout, which was also 2 bank robbers, & one of them tanked (fatally) without *any* body armor. Both robbers also killed in that shooting.
    Edit: What’s not made clear in the movie, what’s believed at least, is Larry was experiencing side effects from the drug he, and Emil, had taken earlier before the robbery, which were Emils prescription for his epilepsy.

      If you study them, their reasons and motives, you can have a chance to stop it from happening again, theoretically.
      Edit: Almost forgot to mention. The 2nd suspect didn't receive medical attention for an hour after giving up. 20 shots in his legs. He bled out.
      He could have survived. We could have understood more. Who knows what his info could have helped us stop.
      He even asked the cops to kill him when he gave up, he wanted to die. I think him surviving and answering for his crimes would have been more justice. Personal opinion.

Sure they coulda got away, but you gotta put yourself in Philips shoes, either you surrender and never see the light of day again (they were wanted for previous robberies and murdering a cash truck guard) or you die and forever change methods of policing and be remembered forever. Sure they were both violent murderers, I would’ve loved to see them rot in prison, but calling them insane is unfair. Either rot in prison or go out with a bang.
