    Best thing I ever did Mel, started with a folding Bike similar to yours, upgraded to a Giant E-mountain bike, got a tow bar Thule bike rack and haven't looked back ! I'm 59, hadn't ridden a bike since I was 15ish. It really got me looking at personal fitness too, it was never about turn on full power and do nothing. Great video as usual Mel, all the best.

    Great video, I permanently carry my ebike in my camper. I find it great for out of town parking during busy seasons, and exploring off road. When I built my camper I designed it around my bike with the ouick release wheel off. Just a tip buy a minimum 350w bike although illegal in UK it is usable, the 250w legal bikes are only good on the level. All thanks to our desk based government who hardly ride bikes. Keep up the good work 👍

Having come off Mountain and Motor bikes at 30 ish mph it can make a mess. Hi Mel great video as always .just a thought, with all those lithium divices you have under your van that requires charging. would it pay you to have a smoke alarm under your bed just in case one becomes faulty. It may give you extra time to get out. If you've ever seen a lithium battery fire 🔥 stay safe?

    I bought the FIIDO M21 recently. The brakes were pretty awful and I should have checked for oil/residue on the discs before riding as they were squealing like hell. I have stripped down both of the cable brake pad assembly's - they are the work of the devil as they explode from the spring pressure in the inner side pot. The pads are magnetically attached to a grub screw on the outer face, and a to the moving piston on the inner face. I have put copper grease on the backs of each pad, assembly paste on the washers that mate to the frame, and decent thread lock on the bolts. Discs have been given the full brake cleaner treatment. The brakes are much better now, but still squeal in damp conditions. I have ordered some full float discs and am looking at getting a hydraulic set up next.

    • @BigVanSmallWorld
      @BigVanSmallWorld  Před rokem

      Good luck with the upgrade I’d be interested to know how you get on with it 👍

      @@BigVanSmallWorld Well... I couldn't find a hydraulic set that has the secondary slot on the brake levers for the power sensor, so I bought a set of floating 180mm discs and some Shimano cable brake callipers and resigned myself to using the existing levers.
      I removed the old rear calliper and attached the Shimano. I had to use spacers from the stock calliper bolts to get the brake piston correctly aligned. Then I spotted a minor problem; the brake ferules on the existing cable did not fit into the slot/brake adjuster on the Shimano. Out with the dremel and it now sort of fits. When I went to fit the new rear floating disc I spotted a major issue; the power train cable that runs to the controller in the frame prevents easy removal of the existing brake disc - so it either comes apart inside the power hub or somewhere in the frame. So I undid the wiring housing behind the battery frame hinge to see if was just a question of unplugging the lead there - but the power cable splits off somewhere behind the loom and it looks like it branches into many other smaller wires with detachment clips. I certainly wasn't going to tempt fate by messing with this. I don't know how the rear spindle assembly comes apart, so I have left the old rear disc in place for now while I gather the courage to attack this at a later date.
      Front disc was dead easy to swap, but the Shimano was a real pain to fit once again because of the ferule problem and then having to mess about with washers again to get the calliper housing in the correct position.
      So half a day later and finished. I was just going to take it out for a test ride and the heavens have opened - aw bºllºcks! 😃

    Interesting review Mel and certainly looks well made and a bit of fun. But. You could go shopping on a traditional Bicycle that costs a lot less, good exercise and is less knickable and does not need charging all the time. Oh I forgot, the whole world is being led Into the abyss of everything “Electric”. Very, very dangerous. How many cycles does the Battery last I wonder and can it be replaced and at what cost?

    Great bike but be careful. 250w is maximum wattage allowed on the road without being registered for the road and licenced. Get yourself a sticker to put on the motor that says 250w. 🤫

  • @nigelford6473
    @nigelford6473 Před 2 lety +5

    Hi Mel. Nice bit of kit. I've been looking at ebikes. I'm not sure this is UK road legal as the motor exceeds 250w and power assist exceeds 25kph. So is likely I would need a valid license, tax and insurance as is technically an electric motorbike. Nice price though.

    • @daviddehass6877
      @daviddehass6877 Před 2 lety +1

      Just program the controller to 250w and limit the speed for use on the roads. It only takes a minute to take off the throttle. Best of both worlds.

    • @descb600f
      @descb600f Před 2 lety +1

      It has a throttle so its classed as a motorbike, or possibly more accurate a moped. To go near the road it needs Tax and Insurance and the rider needs to have passed a CBT as a minimum.

      @@descb600f not true buddy, you can have a walking throttle but must cut off after 4mph. and you can now also get a dft to check the the safety of the throttle to allow you to use it. It is a hard one for the police to check what a motor is pulling the motor could say 1000w it dose not mean it’s actually 1000w. but ya I’ll agree it’s a hard one to risk that comment with the wrong copper. The way I read it is a MAXIMUM OUTPUT of 250w so I don’t see the problem If the controller is limit the output. I’m in the same boat I’m a truck driver and don’t want to risk any points. Ado 20f or there new xe range are very similar bikes but good think is they are locked and labelled at 250w motor

    I'm not sure what's grey about the area. It has the ability to go faster, has more power than the legal definition of an eBike and having a throttle automatically makes it a moped. Nothing grey about it go ask your local police station. It's as grey as riding a moped without the same.

    Mel, it’s not a throttle. A throttle controls the amount of petrol that is passed in to a carburettor. What you have on an e-bike is a variable resistor that controls the flow of electricity like a volume on a radio or a dimmer light switch. Just saying like 😀👍😎
