What is the Rain Shadow Effect?

  • Why do we often have more rain and plants on the western side of a mountain range than the eastern side?
Well, what happens is an air parcel that's very warm and compact starts to rise up the windward side of the mountain.
And as it does, it expands because there's
less air pressure as you go higher up.
And as it expands, those air particles are going to be bumping into each other less, so it's going to get colder.
As it gets colder, it can't hold as much water vapor, so clouds are going to condense and you're going to get some rainfall, and that's going to grow a bunch of trees.
Now, on the leeward side of the mountain, the exact opposite is going to happen.
Our expanded air parcel is going to start to compact.
As air pressure increases, those air particles are going to bounce into each other a lot more.
It's going to get warmer and it's going to be dry because all of the rain has already been squeezed out.
So that basically explains why on the windward side of mountains, you often have a lot of trees, and on the leeward side, you often have a desert.

the farther up you go the colder the air gets
that's why mountains have snow caps

When there is a high pressure system to the Northeast of the mountains, the winds will blow counterclockwise around the high pressure system and the air will flow over the mountains from the desert and produce the same type of heating on the non-desert side of the mountains.
The result is the Santana winds that produce major fires in Southern California during the fall months.

Is there a minimum elevation level for the effect to take place on average? You mentioned the Santa Cruz mountains, and relative to the Sierras, they’re rather short. I’ve observed it while living in San Jose and in Livermore, too.

Thank you man, however I got a question please (btw english isn't my first tongue).
There are mountains which covered by green nature, land, trees, plants on both sides. How that one works ?
I did some research and most of them say "All mountain ranges experience the rain shadow effect to a certain extent"
I hope the mountains don't turn into hills or do they at some point ?
    Thanks

Why do "prevailing winds" go from west to east? Is it just because of the rotation of the Earth? There must be *some* prevailing winds that go in the other direction.
