  • It could soon be legal for some teachers in Tennessee to carry a concealed handgun inside their public school classrooms. This comes after House Republicans passed a bill that would allow teachers who are approved to carry firearms on campus.
The ruling was passed despite strong opposition from parents, educators, and Democrats, who argue arming teachers would not deter school shootings and could instead result in additional violence.
The bill is now set to go to Republican Governor Bill Lee for his signature. Tennessee State Representative Justin J. Pearson joins Scripps News to weigh in on the state's controversial bill.

Has noone in this feed ever been in a classroom. I quit teaching because the children don't receive discipline for the things that they do. Children will figure out how to get their hands on these guns and its just going to make the school's more dangerous.

It's up to law enforcement to uphold the laws , not the teachers . You are placing the law enforcement into the law of the hands of the teachers ?

Police can't be everywhere all the time. Most of the time they can only react to what has already happened. You have the right to keep and bare arms you don't have a right to "be safe".

Maybe parents need to have their kids home schooled or go to private schools!
Safety first! Not a school teacher's job description to pack a gun.

@@annebiggins7180This is part of the GQP to shut down public schools and have everyone "homeschooled" or a "charter school"

Well regulated meant well trained in the parlance of the day. This bill actually fits quite well with that, because it requires applicants go through extensive training.

Wish you were on for better reasons, JJP! With you anti arming teachers & pro gun laws, but afraid uniformed & trained guards needed. Be nice if there was also less gun glory in media & more mature handling in practice. Beyond? Afraid gonna take some national shake-up vs corruption & criminal empires, but not expecting THAT soon!

I think no one will defend the children more than than teachers except their parents. Yes we could have some accidents but they will defend the children with their lives. My politics are on the left but as a black man from the south im sick of these black democrats pushing gun control. He kniw full well that he can garantee anything he is saying.

You should, they experience more shootings and violent crimes, than the majority of Tennessee. And just in case your unaware, those evaluations for which teachers can carry guns, will go just as well as the evaluation, they give cops, before hiring them. In a completely red town in east tennessee, recently schools were put on a soft lock down. It was because of threats, from a former police officer, that currently worked as a officer, at the airport in a nearby town. Look up the things tennessee teachers, have pled guilty to or were convicted of....look up resigned or fired police officers in tennessee......
