1 of the few guys that had an answer to all of Jay's deep historic questions. I love it
SS-Oberführer Porsche was still depressed that he lost WWII against us while he was building that car and now Seinfeld is buying his works.. LOOOOL en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_Porsche#Early_life
What kind of knob head comment is that?
Idiot.
The only one close to this persons knowledge of the bespoken subject is actually the woman owning the BMW 1600 in a later episode here.
Jay should have his guests watch these real enthusiasts prior to having them on his show.
Manny S maybe he knew how to politic on the fly, you know one of those who have all the questions and answers for everything, noticed he babies that VW, VWS WERE BEST DRIVEN HAMMER DOWN TO KEEP COOL.
What an amazing piece of automotive history. i love how they restored it back to it's first day of racing.
Last actual remaining "first Porsche" Type 64 is still unrestored. You can see quite a lot of similarities between that 1939 car and this one. Both "borrowed" heavy from Tatra 97. Funny enough Muricans destroyed 2 other Porsche Type 64 in existence so only 1 remains.
A little story (actually a quote from the Porsche factory tour) for Jay, since he mentioned the seats not being RECARO seats in the video: It is a well known fact that Reutter built the majority of Porsche bodiesfrom 1950 until 1963, when Reutter became part of Porsche. Not all of Reutter's employees very happy about this change so they started their own business, based on the company that was registered 1957 in Switzerland: RECARO REutter CArosserie ROhbau. Reutter coachbuilders. And obviously the RECARO name is still in the business (RECARO Holding), but today the car seats business belongs to Johnson Controls.
Just a little fun fact I thought you'd probably enjoy :-)
Fritz Brause Hello from Stuttgart 👋🏻
@@holyfox94 mahlzeit aus duisburg ^^
These cars had a bog-standard interior (possibly) because this car was not designed to be a racing car in the first place. The first bespoke Porsche racing car was the 550.
Gildo Schuster
Honestly the type 64 (based on Volkswagen Beetle, the type 60 Porsche to be exact) of prewar fame was the first Porsche and the first of the racers, but the 356/1 was the first definitive Porsche.
How interesting, I did not know that! Thank you!
With all the great cars Jay has and has driven it's great to see him in awe of a car. Genuine respect and appreciation from a true car guy !
25:38 Man, those crossed arms and the "Yeah, yeah... yeah."
He's bummed he's not driving. XD
@@Doctor_Robert DEFINITELY. And ffs, Jay has driven his Mclaren for years without totaling it, I think he is man enough to handle the jaw dropping power of 40 hp. Somebody must've thought that it's too valuable.
@@igkgigoh I know, it's a bit silly. GM let him drive the Buick Y-Job and Mercedes let him drive the only driveable C-111.
Begs the question of how many cars does he turn down because the people won't let him drive it. This one came through, I reckon, because it's exceptional.
@@Doctor_Robert I'd love to know if or how many people contacted him but then revealed that he can't drive the car. I agree that it's probably a big nope for him, but this seems like it was never questioned and only said before it was to time to get in the car. He is really annoyed, understandably though.
@@Doctor_Robert If there was one person I would want to drive and crash my car it is Jay Leno. The publicity etc. would encourage him to fix up the car better than it was before at no cost to the owner. Also a 1-off car is the only car in the world who's value is unaffected by wrecks or rebuilt titles. It's the only one in the world. If it had been compacted at the crusher, it could be rebuilt and sold for millions, so long as you could prove it was the same car, and nobody would say you should have left it in the crusher... It's all on account of egos and money and the way car guys are. In this instance, it is a power play by that boy who is promoting his fathers shop, and acting all big by oneupping the crown prince Mr. Leno on his own program.
Like Trigger in only fools and horses said i have had this broom all my life I changed the head 4 times and the handle 6 times.
The joke is originally from Open All Hours :P Sorry had to just throw that in
Who else in the whole world could host a show like this. Who even knows where to begin to do a show like this ? This is the coolest show ever about all kinds of cars.Cars and Motorcycles and all things that go rolling along the road. Way to go Jay Leno!
I really appreciate Jay Leno's Garage." No one has ever done such a great show about every man's favorite subject. Cars.. Very good for any guy who loves cars. This is truly a unique show because of Jay's decades of experience and interest in cars. This show is the real deal. I learn more than i thought i knew about cars when i watch this show.
Also, I was among those who may have seen Jay's role in "Last Man Standing." Ha!
I'll keep watching that show because Jay Leno is in it. That's all. Thanks Man.
I'm so glad that this car still lives.
The moment he said original 50's tires, Jay didn't regret not driving it anymore.
You would have thought they would have had some new tyres on it for driving it around and kept the 50's tyres for shows
Probably pretty tricky to change the wheels on it and I doubt it actually gets driven around much anyway. I would guess it mostly travels on the back of a trailer.
+David Bell Yeah, I would rather straighten a bent frame and repair an all aluminum body from a total wreck than take 30 minutes change the only part of the car that touches the road and controls the travel of the car.
Explains why he was driving so slow.
He must mean rims? Tires expire after 6 years, and that's modern rubber. 60 year old tires would probably fail very quickly.
The first time I haven't seen Jay drive
I think the only other one he didnt drive in was the Pagani Hyuara
not true the v8 trike thing he didnt drive either or pretty much must race cars on here he hasnt driven
I'd like to see Christie's appraisal of this car for auction. I'd bet it would easily clear $20 million if it truly is the first. Won't surprise me to see it at auction in a couple years.
Insurance? Would any insurance company touch this car? "Your annual payment sir will be $2,000,000 with an excess of $10,000,000"
A normal car insurance company wouldn't, but the ones that specialize in cars or art certainly do.
Very grateful to all involved for sharing this car and its history with the world in such an open manner. So cool!
30:48 When a Mazda almost rear-ends your priceless car
best guest Jay has ever had on hands down!!
Rod is a very, very impressive man, not only because of his intricate knowledge but also because of his ability to impart that knowledge with passion and clarity. This is a guy who needs to be involved in higher echelons of motoring - seriously, seriously impressive guy.
Well stated.
I just wish that someone would have mentioned that this was the, "very first LeMans racing Porsche".
This is absolutely beautiful Jay! What a wonderful story! I lament the loss of these beautiful mechanical technologies.
Rod really went to down with researching all the history of the car to get this restoration as authentic as possible. Well done.
Now that is what I call attention to detail. Incredible!
Love listening to this guy, fascinating piece of history..
Jay Leno has such knowledge about cars and history it's so impressive.
Very complete video, I wish more of the cars you review had videos that were this long Jay. I'll go out on a limb here and say that 90% of your viewers wish almost all cars you review had the full treatment like this one got, and then go ahead and take a big gamble in betting on the fact that nobody would ever complain that the videos are too long. This is better than TV Jay, here those who just want to see the car running can skip whatever they find boring in a single click.
I fell asleep, and I'm a Porsche fan.

I don't know how I missed this video two years ago. Great video and kudo's to Rod and Emory Motorsports for a fantastic job on the restoration.
A fantastic, historical Car.
Only Jay Leno manages to feature Magic, fabulous cars like this 46 Porsche.
We can imagine this vehicle racing, day-and-night, through Les Mans.
Probably Fangio, Sterling Moss, Bonetto, and all the great names were competing in that very same race.
Thank you Jay -- another amazing Video
That was cool. One of those cars you never hear about much less get to see in detail. Thanks for another great one Jay!
I’m a big believer in driving and using cars like this. It’s what they were meant for.
But out in traffic in a car this historical and irreplaceable wow. Especially on the old tires. That’s pushing it.
I was a little surprised that they did not have a chase car to hold off tailgaters. Beautiful car and the work that went into it was amazing.
An absolute pleasure to see and hear it go, thanks all.
Yes, my GTI is faster, handles better, is more reliable and better built, but you cannot explain to someone who doesn't 'get it' how awesome this vehicle is! Thanks Jay for showing us this beauty!
You have to have a little history yourself to acknowledge what history has to offer. Fantastic car.
I had the chance to buy a 1968 912 back in the late '70s. But, I was too young to get a loan myself, and my dad wouldn't help. I did take it for a test drive and it ran great. I guess it could have had problems, but because I couldn't buy it, I didn't get it checked out.
i bet Leno wore denim socks and undies in anticipation for having that Porsche in the garage.
😅😅 Good one, I think he was actually born in denim tho..😆
They need to get the #6 1938 Volkswagen bug ever made on this show.
Its very scary to think just how easy it is for legendary cars such as this one to become lost or destroyed. And I like what Jay Leno said about the younger generation. Yeah new cars are cool, but not cool enough to forget the cars and legends that got them there.
Just imagine if this Porsche came up for sale., imagine it's value- PRICELESS
Porsche 917, 956,962,the many 911 variants, and this little 1100cc car, was the very first car to compete in racing for the Stuttgard company.
One of the most interesting Jay's Garage videos.
Thanks Jay, it was a real pleasure watching this.
Top 10 favorite episode of Jay leno's garage
Reminds me of the fabulous Gmund coupe restoration performed by Camm Ingram and. the lads at Roads Scholars.. that car went on to win Pebble in 2011. It's good to see Jay enjoy the significance of a historical car like this. Kudos for a job well done.
I am an airhead. . . Learned to drive in a type 2 vw bus. own a 1960 deluxe sedan (still 6-volt!). Have always appreciated Porsche from a distance financially, but wow! I would feel so at home in driver's seat. Thanks for this, Jay ;)
Amazing Porche! Thank You for Sharing it With Us.
Wow! Thank you so much... Totally enjoyed this and loved the historical aspects.
👍🏼
Jay has a first rate garage, the best technicians, and more money than god. Let Jay drive!
Paul S and this car is beyond expensive if it gets damaged

Beautiful & with Leno's description of the coupe in Austria. Thanks PRECIOUS.
The Best Show, anywhere! Thanks.
W0W, What an Humbling experience to see this amazing vehicle. I bet the owner WAS Very Nervous while you was out riding around in it, man.
It is a beautiful car for a period race car from that time frame from the European racing scene. It is also funny in a way because people always give VW's a hard time for having such a small air cooled under powered engine but here we see that a race car a Porsche no less shared a huge part of it's power-train with the lowly VW bug. 40HP and winning LeMans in it's class and 28th over all. The extreme light weight 1300lbs. speaks volumes to the less is more idea that was also at work with Lotus.
What a treat to see this car and hear it's history.
That turquoise classic in the background....immaculate!
Lindo trabalho! Amo a história do automobilismo e as particularidades das corridas de antigamente. Estar na garagem do Jay Leno seria um sonho. Muito legal!
Bom trabalho
Wow! What a great job! This is one of the best episode from Jay's Garage!! All details so original thumb up!!!
This is a great show !!!!! I start watching episodes of it and can't stop.
Mr. Rod Emory is a national treasure. What a car!
Probably the rarest of any Porches that were and remember it is the very first Porche racecar period. STILL on the road and I guess it should be.
TBull Cajunbreadmaker : actually the rarest would be the 1939 Porsche racer....Chris Harris drove it on Top Gear on CZcams

That was special
The restoration on this car is over the TOP. Wow. Jaw dropped!
Wow 45 hp Porsche racing at Le Mans. We have racing go karts with tiny engines that could output more than 45 horsepower. We really have come a long way since 1951.
Jay was thinking, 66 year old tires? Jesus this guy drank the entire jug of koolaid, didn't he? Awesome video guys, I was entertained, so cool!
yea i think it was just a joke with those perfectly looking 66yrs old tires. In case of a blowout it would shred that aluminum fender in seconds, not to mention the whole precious car could crash.
Blame collectors that want the cars absolutely original with zero exceptions.
Coker could have made perfect replica tires for driving instead of risking peoples lives.
The car and Jay are within a year of each other.
Wow what a beautiful and historic Porsche.
What an epic episode! Having loved Porsche since I was a kid and now finally owning my first, this was just incredible. Thanks Jay!
What do you have?
The excitement in jays voice at @6:42 is one of a child, its nice seeing someone get so worked up for a little history. “Its pretty amazing.”
Biautifull
Facinatic race car for
that time... Great to watch
You could sense the uneasiness in Jay's face once the guy said how old the tires were. I kinda think safety is more important than having "era" tires on it.
Because this thing can go fast enough to strain the tires that much..
Ryan Spalding People are just getting ridiculous with this originality theme.
@@gregorytimmons4777 Well, at least the tires should be new.
This car will probably NEVER be driven again. For the day, they took a risk
Not everybody is afraid of their own shadows. Knowledge is safety
first time I agree , this is not a test drive car, Although happy they are actually driving it on the streets! Give this guy a medal for restoration!
wow, what a piece of history. I imagine that if this car ever hit auction, it has a real shot at breaking the record for most expensive car ever sold.
Matt Wasilewicz IMO that would be totally unjustified when stacked up against rare old Bugatti's, a surviving limo of Hitler's, the only surviving Horsch etc. People have just gone off the deep end over these glorified VW's. I get that they have value and historic relevance but let's keep some perspective here.
@@gregorytimmons4777 you think a rare Bugatti or Hitler’s limo compares to the Porsche that won Le Mans in their first ever race? How much cooler can a car get? If you’re interested in Porsche and/or sportscar racing, this is the holy grail. Not that there aren’t other holy grails, but a lot of rich guys love Porsche race cars
The 912 had the 915 "dog leg" 5 speed transmission, which was followed by the G50. Which in my humble opinion is the greatest manual transmission ever , but then again, Porsche is the greatest car in history. I'd give this episode a thousand thumbs up!!!Oh btw, I think Steve McQueen's Jaguar must be the most valuable car to have been in Jay's Garage, I can't remember the price but it sold for over ten million dollarsAnd YES Jay should've been allowed to drive, it just adds value to the car. :-).
Here's a gentleman (among many) who understands the historical fringes of every aspect of the Porsche brand in addition to the mechanical operation and performance. Another level!
This is an amazing story by both of you. Glass windshield and perspex racing windows. Juat loved seeing the red inside of the headlamp buckets. Authomotive archeology. This is some great history and we can add being on Jay Leno's Garage to its history. My '74 that I ran into was in Rennsport IV at Monterey. That's where I met Jay for the first time in person. My '74 went through so much but eventually I had to sell it. My car was some kind of a test car for Porsche before it was sold. It is considered to be the earliest Porsche still on the road in North America for the 1974 year. It has a unique set of trial gauges in it and it has the holes that are factory drilled for the optional factory plastic race fuel tank that was not offered on the 1974 models but rather the 1973 model. Clearly this started life as a long hood chassis and then was built up as a 1974 and sold to its initial owner who bought it from Mark Motors in Oxnard (a dealer few people recall let alone having ever heard of. The cars DOT sticker and original license plates are still with the car. That sticker has the completion date in July 1973, belleive it or not. The color is factory original emerald green metallic. During my restoration efforts on the car, more than one independent Porsch mechanics stole parts off of it. This inlucde the paint code badge and the original accordian covers for the bumpers. It also included the original American headlights. What else was stolen, I don't know. The engine, transmission and body remain original to the car. I had help selling the car and it went through one of the main people in Orange County Cars and Coffee weekend show. The original gauge cluster that is totally unique to this particular car is still with it. I have lot of Rennsport IV photos of it. The custodians sent me a letter saying that they could tell I loved the car. Due to illness at the time, I sold that 1974l It has gone to a good home. The car has experienced a hard life and after an accident, I could have junked it, but I had it rebuilt for the third time under my stewardship. AF

Thanks Jay for another GREAT historical car video. Wonderful channel. I had a Porsche 912, 5 speed for 4 years. As a kid I thought it should have had more power. Now I know the importance of these Porsches I just took for granted. I wish I still had it.

I love this clip. Porsches first car to win the Lamont 24hrs race. And also to know that they orginally had two but then were down to one. That's like working a long shift only to find out that you now have to work literally 24hrs because your relief couldn't make it. And the company's entire future rested on this little car is crazy. Every car in Porches history and inventory owes a dept of gratitude to to this little car.

Always wondered why they don't use a buffer car at the rear to stop people rear ending priceless cars like this one...
Mercedes had a buffer car for their C111 when Jay drove it last year.
Seems like cheap insurance against tragedy, unless of course the guy they get to drive behind loses concentration. lol
Tires from the 50's ... now that is brave. They're lucky they didn't turn to dust going around a corner.
Inner-tubed though, and as long as they are not dry rotted they should be fine. They probably didn't even go 40 mph the entire time.
yeah its pretty dumb put some tires on the car.
