There is lungi, dhoti , pancha...it's matter basically how you wear it...lungi is generally used as casual like shorts where as dhoti ,mundu are mostly formal dress code used while occasions , pancha is used much more strong formal wear but complex to wear..you happen to see this kings wearing this in Bahubali and PS , one more version is gochi generally used by hardworking people used while working in fields...
Dhoti, Mundu, Veshti are all same traditional attire in different languages of south. Lungi is a different attire used as casual wear. Even after so many roasts for lungi dance and south stereotypes, still you people are generalizing the attire, language, region and tradition of south. When will the Bollywood film makers strat to do some homework and effort to understand this before making a movie...

Just to simplify, Lungi is an informal wear.. which is worn by wrapping the cloth around the waist, similar to night pants or casual wear. Lunginis very very common especially in south indian homes where every dad shifts into lungi once they come home. Many men even wear lungi all the time in villages, even while working in the fields.
Generally an underwear or shorts are worn underneath the lungi, when they go outside their home, but when they are in their homes, it's their personal preference to either wear anything underneath or have the natural ventilation for comfort.. 😂
Where as panchey/dhoti/ veshti, mundu are more formal wear for men across India, which has been very much there from the ancient India times, even in Mahabharata and Ramayana times dhoti is the common dress code for men (ofc with its different variations). Even the kings and commoners in those days used to wear dhoti or panchey. The same is worn in Bahubali movie as well and the same is seen worn by the deities, in the temples.
My grandfather's generation has the habit of wearing dhotis regularly. But now a days dhoti is only worn occasionally by very few.
I'm from Telugu speaking region where the version of dhoti is called panchey. It is worn similar to dhoti and is little complicated to wear (looping between the legs while wrapping around the waist). Unless they know how to wear it, it can't be worn. So, it's not as prevalent in today's times.. as very few know how wear it. Even in my friend circle or my family, I'm in the small minority who knows proper panchey kattu (how to wear a panchey). Only the priests in the temples are seen wearing the panchey on a regular basis now a days. That all being said the traditional 'panchey kattu' in Andhra Telangana regions is still followed.
But in southern parts of Andhra Pradesh (southern Rayalaseema), due to cultural mixing with Tamil nadu, they all wear panchey in a different way that is similar to veshti mundu, which we refer to as "adda panchey" (horizontal panchey) in Telugu. This is a different variation where the veshti cloth is warped around the waist directly (like a lungi) unlike dhoti version of panchey.

Where as , a Veshti, mundu is the traditional attire in Tamilnadu and Kerala regions.
Even when it comes to dhoti, dhoti itself is a generic term and the dhoti is worn with different variations in different regions like Bengali style, Marathi style, Andhra style, Kerala style, Rajastani style, some specifically suitable for different purposes.
People wear dhoti till above the knees which is worn tightly, when they work in fields or are involved in physical work.
The warriors used to wear a different variation which offers more mobility.
And different cloths are used based on the occassion, like cotton is used for regular purposes.
where as silk is prefered if there is any ceremony and it generally comes with a golden border. This applies to both Dhoti and veshti mundu.
Now a days people only wear dhoti or panchey or veshti mundu for special occasions or ceremonies.
Even historically, There are informal versions of dhoti which is contemporarily called as "gochi" (in Telugu)... Which is a multi-purpose wear for odd jobs.
In India, Historically the generic dhoti (which every the variation) has been the daily wear for the men and saree has been the daily wear for women.
