this happened because Xtep (a major chinese shoe maker) who sponsored the runner is doing a huge ad campaign for their new release and need the runner who they are sponsoring to win the race so they can put him in their new ad and sell more shoe. and it is the marathon runner community of china who are calling them out and exposed it on social medias so that now you see it.
I always find it funny that the rest of the world see china, the entire 1.4 billion population as one single person. and if a chinese doing anything, it must be the collective will of all chinese doing it, and it is must for either some collective purpose or government agenda. no way it is a shady business and a self-promoting celebrity runner who collaborated for exposure for their own financial gain. it must be the collective will of 1.4 billion chinese who make them do it.

A pacer will typically be a lesser athlete who will run at or near record pace for 1/2 the race, and then drop out allowing the elite athlete to do the rest and set a record or elite time. It’s a common thing, but they almost never win the race like this case
