    Kino Lorber is an amazing company and I wish I could afford to buy more of their releases. Treasure Of The Four Crowns was one of those movies that never got a decent release until this Blu-Ray. I preordered it as soon as it became available for preorder! I saw TOTFC in the theater in 3D and the polarized 3D was amazing! Unfortunately I can only view the 2D or the Anaglyph 3D which still looks pretty good. The movie itself is bad but I love it! I 100% agree that a movie doesn’t have to be great to be fun or entertaining. As always, great video Heath!

    I don't agree that the slipcover is just a piece of cardboard. It adds uniformity to the shelves, doesn't create as much glare when light hits it at certain angles, and the color is better than the color of the spine behind the clear plastic of the standard case. On the other hand, there is no way on earth I'm paying a bunch of extra money just to get one.

      I can understand that. I mean, it's COOL cardboard, and I like them when they're included for the reasons you've mentioned, but slipcovers as a valuable collectible still perplexes me, especially when so many people throw them away. As Aaron and I talked about a few weeks ago in our "Why Do We Collect" video, the second hand slipcover market reminds me way too much of the variant comic book cover market, which tanked the entire comics industry 25 years ago, sending Marvel into bankruptcy and leading to an all-time low in comics readership. I don't want to see that happen with home media, but it sure looks like it's all happening again. The minute the focus of an item becomes its form and value over its function, then that item is officially in trouble. We're not quite there yet, but the increase in movies as a value-and-profit focused collectible does not bode well for our hobby.

      @@CerealAtMidnight That makes perfect sense. I have similar concerns about the folks who collect movies just to have them, with watching as a secondary concern. How sustainable is that? What happens when the zeitgeist shifts and physical media hype dies an unexpected death. Could go badly.

    I think I saw Francis the talking mule when I was a kid and maybe even Mr.Ed on tv. I remember them as pleasant part of my childhood. I have Without Warning on Venezuelan VHS and I found weird that I have an American movie from a foreign source/country but the movie itself was unavailable in US. I also have Enter The Devil and Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things from Venezuela same thing American movies unavailable in the US that I had from a foreign source. It's kind of ridiculous. Man Kino's been releasing so many movies lately that's incredible. Good showing and cool video Heath!👍

    As punk kid at the time, "Times Square" was one of the few movies that "got it", "Son of Samson" looks great, but I'm most excited by the "Francis the Talking Mule" set. Those movies were on TV a lot when I was little. And I loved them. But I haven't seen them in years. Finally, re purchase links, I try to use them for stuff I buy from Amazon, but I always buy my Kino stuff straight from Kino.

    I don't know if any of the films in this month's Kino Lorber releases is a must-buy, but I'm definitely adding Without Warning to my wishlist. It's one of those films I was vaguely aware of as a kid but never actually saw (although it's entirely possible I saw some of it on late night TV in the late 80s to mid 90s). It sounds like good ridiculous fun.
    Canadian boutique bluray website Unobstructed View is having a month long Kino Lorber sale, and I took the opportunity to finally pick up Metropolis, Nothing Sacred (another Carole Lombard film for my collection!), and Theater of Blood (one of my favourite Vincent Price films, and one of the view I specifically wanted to upgrade from the old Midnite Movies DVDs). You're definitely right about this being a good time to be a film fan.

    I do hate how much attentions have gone to slips and how crazy people get over them. You're right it's just cardboard, we should be collecting for the movies. However, as a collector, I am still compelled for them. Sometimes on movies I really enjoy I feel like something is missing without them. Like its the 99% definitive version. But there's still that 1% sometimes.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před 2 lety +1

      I love when they have alternate artwork. I don't want to act like I hate slipcovers, because I for sure see what they add, but when I see people not buying a release because it doesn't have 8 cents worth of cardboard around it, that's unfortunate. It's a cool little bonus item.

    Hey man, great video thanks. To answer your question, I use purchase links on youtube videos all of the time. It is so much easier than having to search....especially when it is a *specific* release, or maybe there is more than one version of a release.
    I know it is more work for you, but I am someone who utilizes them.
    I ALSO just watched MIGHTY PEKING MAN...what a TRIP. It was an odd addition to that box set vibe. It felt like that should be a stand alone release and 8 DIAGRAM POLEFIGHTER should have been in the box. I don't know maybe I'm wrong but it doesn't matter...I bought both anyway. LOL

    Absolutely agree, Heath, more peplum, please! I love 'sword and sandals' style fantasy, and miss that genre. As much as I appreciate The Lord of the Rings type films, I feel like it's pigeon holed fantasy into a very limiting aspect. I'd much rather see good versions of Robert E Howard type stories being adapted to film than another Tolkien CGI fest. I guess I'm just in a small demographic, growing up loving Conan comics and fawning over Frank Frazetta art. Glad someone else likes these types of films too, though.

    Fun fact. The Arthur Freed song Make Em Laugh, performed by Donald O’Connor in Singin in the Rain like you mentioned, is very if not a bit too similar to the Cole Porter song Be A Clown, performed by O’Connor’s SITR costar Gene Kelly in the MGM musical The Pirate just a few years earlier. So yes, great performance, but also quite derivative.

Whenever possible, I think it is valuable that people know a bit more about who else may have put out a particular title, and whether or not the transfer / packaging and / or special features may be better. Think Imprint out of Australia which has re-released so many films of late that have had inferior prior releases and you get the idea.
