If you look at the tiles for the merged buildings, you can tell that some tiles have cliff-faces that prevent them from allowing a merger. Every tile in the combo seems to be without sheer cliffs.
EDIT: Yeah, the tutorial states this explicitly actually.
Not for me. It works it just adjusts the height. BTw, the reason it didn't work: You needed FIVE of them. Not four. It's a weird goofy ahh glitch, I KNOW.

You really had a lot of tunnelvision in this game, as you skipped really good placements just by selection wrong buildings or not looking what you already placed.
Yeah, this game let's you get distracted pretty easily. Perhaps the best strategy is to focus on one area, draw all the decks and focus on resources and basic buildings
Things have checked since the last time I seen it.
My only issue is that I want to see little villagers moving around and animated buildings like smoke and stuff. Edit: Nvm, I guess its just youtube rendering, there is infact little villages and smoke piles, so cool
You CAN see them. It's a graphic setting.

I think some really good ones have come out but I’ll admit I’m also not a huge fan of them.
