I am grateful to gather with you today in this Brigham Young University devotional. Susan and I love you and have looked forward to this occasion with great anticipation for many weeks.
I am pleased to bring to you the love and blessings of President Russell M. Nelson, President Dallin H. Oaks, President Henry B. Eyring, and all of my associates in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. We love and pray for you, and we appreciate your prayers for us.
I do not know the exact number of devotionals like this one that I attended during my years as a student on the BYU campus. But I do know and am grateful for the lasting impact that the messages I heard have had upon my life. I encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity to receive spiritual nourishment from the faithful men and women who are invited to speak in your campus devotionals.
I pray for the companionship, help, and edifying power of the Holy Ghost for all of us as I share my thoughts with you.
The Nauvoo Exodus
Today is January 19, 2021. Almost exactly 175 years ago, on February 4, 1846, Charles Shumway ferried across the Mississippi River and started the westward migration of Latter-day Saints from Nauvoo, Illinois. For three weeks in frigid temperatures, wagons ferried across the river, often steering clear of large ice chunks. After Charles C. Rich walked across the Mississippi on February 25, scores of additional refugees crossed the river on solid ice.1 The winter phase of this mass exodus was directed by President Brigham Young-the well-known Camp of Israel trek across Iowa involving approximately 3,000 Saints.
The spring phase of the exodus included three large waves of refugees departing Nauvoo and involved more than 10,000 Saints-triple the number in the winter departure.
The fall phase of the exodus included about 700 Saints who were forced from Nauvoo at gunpoint.
The winter withdrawal from Nauvoo in particular caused unimaginable hardship for these faithful Latter-day Saints, and many sought shelter in camps along the Mississippi River. When word reached Brigham Young at Winter Quarters about the condition of these exiles, he immediately sent a letter across the river to Council Point encouraging the brethren to help-reminding them of the covenant made in the Nauvoo Temple. He counseled: “Now is the time for labor. Let the fire of the covenant which you made in the house of the Lord burn in your hearts, like flame unquenchable.”2 Within days, wagons were rolling eastward to rescue the struggling Saints.
What was it that gave those early Church members such strength? What fueled their devotion and enabled them to press forward in overwhelmingly adverse conditions? It was the fire of the temple covenants and ordinances that burned in their hearts. It was their commitment to “worship, and honorably hold a name and standing”3 in the house of the Lord.
President M. Russell Ballard explained:
Sometimes we are tempted to let our lives be governed more by convenience than by covenant. It is not always convenient to live gospel standards and stand up for truth and testify of the Restoration. It usually is not convenient to share the gospel with others. It isn’t always convenient to respond to a calling in the Church, especially one that stretches our abilities. Opportunities to serve others in meaningful ways, as we have covenanted to do, rarely come at convenient times. But there is no spiritual power in living by convenience. The power comes as we keep our covenants. As we look at the lives of these early Saints, we see that their covenants were the primary force in their lives.4
In their extremity, these devoted disciples were keenly aware of their dependence upon God and trusted in Him for deliverance. And I believe they understood that sacred covenants and priesthood ordinances received worthily and remembered continually open the heavenly channels through which we have access to the power of godliness and all of the blessings made available through the Savior’s Atonement...
I meet the apostle bednar. I will never forget it. He was glowing with the light of gods spirit. Reminded me of the old painting of the prophet abenidi in the book of Mormon. He was glowing like the prophets of old.
No doubt
Oof...powerful talk.
I'm fighting my way back after 35 years of stupidity. I never lost my testimony tho and used to share it at parties. One of my nonmember friends got baptized and went thru the temple from those things I shared. That still blows my mind as I have yet to go thru. Life is unpredictable for sure.
I’m making my way back after almost 40 years. There was a couple years when I was active 30 years ago. But, I fell again. Never lost my testimony, just my... discipline. It feels good to enter the chapel Sunday morning and sing hymns, partake of the sacrament and take notes from the talks.
Feels really good 😌
Just keep trying ....
Eight years ago, I came back after 30 years of stupidity and pride. I expected to have to face humiliation and accusations. Instead, I found instant forgiveness, genuine love and trust in my ability to repent. My happy prayers are with you, and I encourage you to take the steps you need to take and dive back in. The water's so peaceful.
@@idahofmegal821 I know it isn't easy, but I'm so happy for you! You are back, and that strengthens us all.
I absolutely LOVE reading all these stories of people coming back to the Church. You are needed!!!! You are able to better connect with some individuals than other people are. So for that, I say thank you!
Very good talk. The Lord speaks through his apostles. We can no longer flee babylon we must face it and build Zion.
Thank you Mel Gibson 😅
Crawling back under my bedcovers. This is getting just too hard.
Iknovate don’t give up. You have Christ on your side. You cannot fail!
@@iknovate you’re not alone in how you feel. I’m getting tired too. I pray the Lord gives us mercy and grace to endure to the end.
Speak for yourself Mel. I'm fleeing babylon and not looking back. I feel ya iknovate. We have to keep going, just like frodo. Press forward. I am an addict and struggle each day to believe and live the gospel. Stay on the bus.
The pandemic has not been as hard on me as others as chronic illness has kept me inside my home during cold winter months. Zoom Sacrament meetings and other meetings have been a miracle for me.
❤️🙏
Thank you for lifting me up in a time where the world seems so dark. No unhollowed hand will stop the work.
"...no unhallowed hand will deter the work of the Lord." I have been praying for consolation for my heart, after the recent events. Elder Bednar was the Lord's mouth piece. Amen... Amen... And Amen.
AMEN!!!
Amen! My prayers were answered too ❤️
I get tired of all the constant anti-Church of Jesus Christ videos that pop up on the right side. I never doubt. However, this phrase is a comforting thought that ALL of their efforts are for naught. "As well might man stretch forth his puny arm to stop the Missouri river in its decreed course, or to turn it up stream, as to hinder the Almighty from pouring down knowledge from heaven upon the heads of the Latter-day Saints."
Amen
Wow. I needed that so much. It’s been so hard having the temples closed for regular worship. I hope that they will be able to be open again because the world needs hundreds of prayer circles all day long. Thank you Elder Bednar her for your inspired words. Miracles have not ceased.
Thank you Elder Bednar. Trying to keep hope alive seems to be the biggest struggle right now for me and for many around me. I will keep trying.
The Lord knows your needs. He will give you hope despite the challenges our world faces. He will protect His people as He has promised in the scriptures. Continue to petition Him and He will lead you on your path.
I have found great comfort in the counsel given to the disciples in 3 Nephi 13:25-34. I know that as I follow the counsel of the Lord's prophet, the Lord will honor my obedience by ensuring that I always have sustenance sufficient for my needs. I know that He will do the same for you.
The Lord was not surprised by any of the commotion in the world today!
@@lafeharris8471 thank you
Do NOT give up brother! We can get thru this together!
I feel the same. Especially about wondering when I will be able to visit a temple again. My closest temple is in another country with a sealed off border. I keep thinking of the examples from the BoM of people who couldn't worship as they desired. Elder Bednar brings up the example of the pioneers from the early days of church history. We are now and will be witnesses to miracles we will write about.
Don't give up no matter how hard it will be
Thank you Elder Bednar for helping us to see with eyes of Faith. I am also a witness that miracles have not ceased. May we continue to fuel the fire of our covenants as we look to the day of gladness. I was taught by a wise friend to always step back and say these three things whenever faced with an inconvenient, frustrating, stressful situation. 1. How fascinating. 2. How inconvenient. 3. I am so blessed. I can't tell you how many times during this pandemic these three phrases have diminished a difficult situation to a doable one, especially when we remember our current and promised blessings.
Profound wisdom & spiritual strength in your friend's counsel. Thank you for sharing these 3 phrases ❤!!!
Thank you Elder Bednar for sharing this with us. Thank you for your time and effort in serving the Lord and His people in His church. We are grateful for the temples so that we may perform these great ordinance in our behalf and our ancestors. Thank you for all those who served in the temple also serve in the church. I am so grateful to be a part of this Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I see the church members doing remarkable things now and in the future and the world will go it separate way. We thank our heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ for our prophet to lead in these latter days and I want to thank The Twelve Apostles for your help and everything you teach us. You all are inspired by the Lord Jesus Christ there is no doubt in my mind. Thanks for helping us prepare for covid-19 and other things even preparing for the future of the church.
Out of tragedies comes blessing. Though the pandemic may have caused limited temple work to be done, we Natives in the Tuba City Stake are witnessing miracles of finding are ancestors. A few challenges we face are cultural barriers of not talking about the deceased and few if any written records before 1850. However, we are finding connections by other means. The Lord is merciful.
I hope to hear about these miracles in detail! What a blessing.
In our hearts we know miracles do exist, but how comforting it is to hear an apostle of the Lord share accounts of miracles in our day that can help not only strengthen our faith but remind us to look for them in our own lives. Thank you Elder Bednar!
very true, miracles of the temples are divine and powerful which enables faithfulness
Thank goodness for Elder Bednar having the Holy Spirit. I really needed some centering 🙂
Me too.
Thank you, Elder Bednar, for sharing these miracles with us. We had our own pandemic temple miracle last summer and I will never forget the love I felt from my Savior that day; I felt it again as I listened to your message. ❤
Thank you Elder Bednar for your service and sacrifice. My soul has received a lift today.
I truly believe that we have miracles in our lives. I see the Lord’s hand in my life daily and I see many miracles in my life. Every one is mighty to me. The key for me is to look for those miracles. If we seek we shall find. In the last year, 2020, where I was thinking that this has been the worst year of my life, I had 2020 Vision and I realized that this was the BEST year of my life. I have gained a personal testimony of the Book of Mormon, I have been blessed so much and have been able to see those blessings. I have had much affliction but as I look for the miracles, I feel joy and gratitude for each and every affliction that touched me over the past year. For each one has brought me closer to God and anything that does that is the MIGHTIEST OF MIRACLES to me. I am so grateful I got to start my day with this awesome talk, I am so grateful for all the miracles that I see in my life. Each one testifies how much God loves me and for that I will be forever grateful.
thank you so much for sharing this
You are welcome ♥️🙏🏻
Thank you Elder Bednar. I needed this today. I hold the temple close to my heart, and I'm grateful for the blessings so many people received from it! Miracles have not ceased. ❤💞
Never been to BYU,or any university.
I have read the scriptures many times and heard talks from many people in different places about faith and history, science, health, etc
Hearing from the person soul while they are speaking are the best of all, and as always those from BYU and People who love God really stay with me.
Thank you very much for sharing these beautiful talks with us ❤️📖🙏
I remember when Elder Bednar was sustained in the twelve. I felt the holy ghost confirm to me he was called for purpose. If he had few friends before, he had a friend in me. Rex Pinegar approached me one time after a fireside and shook my hand firmly. "I remember you from the pre existence my brother" as I thanked him for his service. I feel the same with Brother Bednar. I believe his best is yet to come before the Saviors return and how important he will be.
Such a powerful message. Yes miracles have not ceased! It continues to happen in these latter-days!
The words of Doctrine and Covenants 121:33 kept going through my mind while I listened to Elder Bednar speak. “How long can rolling waters remain impure? What power can stay the heavens? As well might man stretch forth his puny arm to stop the Missouri River in its course as to hinder the Almighty from pouring down knowledge from heaven upon the heads of the Latter-Day Saints.”
I love that these messages come right on time
Dear Elder Bednar, thank you for such amazing and inspiring message, Miracles haven’t ceased. We love you!!
Thank you, Elder and Sister Bednar. We love you.
Thank you 🙏 “As long as there is one man (woman) to save, miracles will exist” touched my heart, answered a prayer, and brought peace to my soul.
What a wonderful, intelligent and inspiring man ❤️
Elder Bednar's address reminded me of the excerpt I learned from the letter from Joseph Smith to newspaper editor John Wentworth. Though it talks about missionary work specifically, I think it is even more widely applicable, to every aspect of this great work as a whole:
"Our missionaries are going forth to different nations. The Standard of Truth has been erected. No unhallowed hand can stop this work from progressing. Persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, and calumny may defame. But the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, 'til it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear. 'Til the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the Great Jehovah shall say, 'The work is done.'"
So wonderfull to receive this testimony of united efforts and miracles during this Special time.
This talk has helped me renew my desire to serve as à temple ordinance worker and to continue to pray for blessings most dear To me.
Thank you Elder Bednar. I cherrish these BYU devotionals.
💓I love the temple & the Lord's miracles. I can't wait to be able to go again.
Miracle comes true obedient to our Covenant to God, blessings open unto us by his Power.💥🙏💖
Amen! I know that what was just talked about by Elder Bednar is the truth!
I love this man. His talks are empowering. He looks exhausted.
He is not exhausted. He is aging big difference.
Absolutely, just loved listening to this talk. Such devotion and obedience, such amazing commitment
This was wonderful! I desperately needed this message of hope today! Thank you for posting so quickly!! ❤️
Let’s pray, that we’ll have an increased “hunger” for the ordinances of the Holy Temple during this unexpected and unwelcome time of “Temple-fasting”. And: no unholy hand - neither virus - will stop this work from progressing.
The most incredible miracles we will ever witness will happen in the last days! The day of miracles have not ceased. They are more incredible for the time we live in!
Charles Shumway was my direct ancestor. What a beautiful talk and an amazing story about temples! Miracles nave not ceased.
This is marie Wheeler of the tuba city Stake. Charles shumway had a home stead in kanab Utah. His sons drove the family cattle between kanab and northern Arizona. On the Honeymoon trail on the sand stone cliffs by tuba city, there are names inscribed by his sons. If you want to see and visit the inscription let me know I can take you to that site. Its been over 100 years since those days of the cattle drives. I can tell you miracles of finding the shumway names, though I am not a relative but have helped those relatives of the Shumways.
My wife's as well.
Such an amazing devotional! Thank you so much for your message, Elder Bednar!
Thank you Elder Bednar.
Thank you Elder Bednar. As we cast our eyes upon the promised land from our corner of the earth, we have faith in knowing that we are led by living prophets seers and revelators . Lovers of The free world needed this message today!🙏🏽❤️God bless the promised land 🇺🇸
I had no idea what happened in November! Thank you for letting us know of these miracles!! I'm deeply touched!!
This needs more views. If the millions of members watched this once it’d be on CZcams’s Trending
One of my top favourite apostles. Love his spirit
He's pretty good
Great and inspiring talk! Elder Bednar's brain is amazing and his spirit is finely tuned in with the Holy Ghost. I think people worry too much for nothing. Everything that has happened, is happening and will yet happen is clearly shown in the Holy Scriptures (including the words of living prophets). Live in righteousness the best you can and let go of worries. Life is still eternal, isn't it?
Well said ! Totally agree.
This was so excellent! I was listening to Come Follow Me with the Book of Central and I was looking on the list of videos on the right to see what I could watch next while I worked on Family History ....for one hour only...(they like me to stay longer those ancestors) And I saw this come up! how glad I am that I listened. First of all i had been contemplating have there been miracles taking place behind all the junk that the media has been spurting out. Are there things that I am missing because I don't catch every article from the Church News. I so don't want to miss out and the Lord heard and answered my heart prayer. I also had an experience close to 20 years ago of being able to participate in temple work during a weekend that the Los Angeles temple was open all night. It was one of the most electrifying sweet and most awake experiences I have had. I was so excited to be there at 12 am. I had also felt as though I was with the saints in Nauvoo being in the temple in the middle of the night. Thank you Elder Bednar this was fantastic! God Bless you.
Thank you Elder Bednar for such an uplifting talk!
Another powerful sermon from Elder Bednar...I loved being at his devotionals at BYU-Idaho when he was the President. #faithtoact
I remember a prophet telling us that one day the temples would be open day and night. I often wondered when that would be. Here it is. 😇
That's interesting, would you know where I could fine that reference?
@@darren_bassett Maybe Lorenzo Snow "The time will come when there will be temples established over every portion of the land, and we will go into these temples and work for our kindred dead night and day." ?
It was referred to be many apostles but I can’t remember now where.
It will open day and night in 1000 years millennium. Our ancestors will come with more genealogy. During the millennium the temple will open day and night. So, prepare yourself, family, and families to live with the Lord during the millennium. And continue to do temple work to those who did not make it to the millennium.
Revelations 7:15, that's what I found
Miracles do happen today. I love these BYU devotionals. Thank you.
These troubling times are sure to get worse. I really need to hear Brother Bednar's talk. My brother is a Patriarch, in Texas. told me about this speech which has comforted my soul.
The future is as bright as your faith!
Every day when I wake up is truly a MIRACLE.
That's sad
Thank you. I needed to hear this today.
Thank you Elder Bednar. Our family has experienced miracles during the pandemic. Our faith has been strengthened. We are most grateful to our loving Heavenly Father. I love him and Jesus Christ so much!
Your message Elder Bednar is so meaningful and really helps us to things in a very different way, so many blessings of truthfulness you had shared in your talk that makes us stay strong and never to cease believing and have faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and His Father. I so believe and testify that you’re message wake us up and do something more, I like a part of your talk that says,”No pandemic can stop the work of the Lord”, sure enough, so many ground breaking for the new temples is happening around the world and more to come, that’s my testimony to know that the work of the Lord will never cease. I so believe and testify that all the Lord’s work will keep on, and on and on and forever. I love this Gospel with all my heart.
What a wonderful speech. Miracles still happen today. I pray that we recognize these in our lives and help other to see them in theirs.
No unhallowed hand will stop the work of the Lord. That sentence gives such great comfort in these troubling times. I'm so grateful to our apostles who bear witness of the miracles and hope we will find when we look for the silver lining in dark times. We will return to our temples and that day will be glorious here on earth and in heaven. ♥
We Love you and we sustain you Elder David A Bednar.
This was wonderful thank you Elder Bednar
Thank you, Elder Bednar.
These experiences only testify of the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. How grateful I am for those who had a part in the Restoration of this magnificent Gospel 🙏
Love Elder Bednar. Thank you!
These Apostles are amazing.
May God bless those strong and mighty members of Christ's Church here on earth.
It great to know that God will not allow this work to be stopped as long as this earth stands. Now that is a Miracle all on its own. Thanx for the reassurance that we will be still working in the Temples when Christ comes here again.
Just what I needed to hear today, thanks Elder Bednar, you are a truly inspired man.
His messages are always eternal, how I love this man.
A very beautiful and much needed to hear talk/message. Sharing along
We had a patron, a woman in her 50's probably, come through the Boise Temple a few months ago to receive her endowments and she was so grateful and touched by the spirit that she literally cried with joy and gratitude the majority of her time while she was receiving her endowments. I was so touched by her gratitude and humility. If we really knew the significance of the temple ordinances, I think we would be crying, too! Let us live the best we can to be prepared for the coming of the Lord.
There is so much light in this talk 💙
An amazing presentation of a miracle! We are so blessed to have Apostles and Prophets to teach us.
Still waiting. We could really use an angel army about now. 💛
Thank you for inspiring message elder Bednar. I am honored to hear your message may God bless us all.
Thank you!❤️
ALLELUIA, AMEN and AMEN... Bless you Elder Bednar.
Thank you so much for the talk, the Lord lives
Thank You for your message and service.
Makes me Love Brigham more.
Powerful talk loved it. Greatful to have come across this talk. Loved the story of the saints who put Heavenly father work first and service day and night. Much love from Melbourne Australia
What a powerful and timely message!
Inspirational!
Ask yourself at the end of the day, “hope have I seen the Lord’s hand in my life today?” Then you’ll recognize miracles- almost daily!
Our Great God of love and miracles. Grateful unto Him. So sacred and holy, thank you.
Faith is the key to receiving miracles so as our faith increases so do the miracles. As the miracles increase our faith is also strengthened. This is how faith grows as we recognize God's hand in our lives. Amazing, it is to me.
The work shall go forth nobly and boldly
Wow. Thank you Elder Bednar for sharing and thank you for being such a great apostle of the Lord. You are such a blessing in my life.
Wonderful.
Amen 🙏 This is exactly what I need today...
I'm Incredibly Grateful For Modern Day Miracles! I Sustain Elder Bednar and All The Prophets Seers and Revelators-
My family has been particularly drawn to family history work during this unprecedented time. We have also seen miracles as family names have been found and our family tree is filling in. I feel the urgency behind this work and look forward to serving in the temple for these family members. This devotional was not only timely, but another witness to me that we are living in the times prophets have long foretold. It’s very exciting!
Tha power of temple covenants have the power to cause miracles and for normal men and women to do extraordinary things. The spirit of God was felt!, thank you elder Bednar
Indeed, the day of miracles has not ceased.
Yay! I get to hear a member of the Quorum of the Twelve speak!
Escuchar a este hombre, me trae paz al espíritu, y tranquiliza mi alma y corazón, esas palabras no son de terrenales.
Gracias por sus palabras.
Love these 🥰
I believe with all my heart that people are being obstructed from getting on your website!
Thank you elder Bernard your message, God bless you
Thank you for posting these talks.
Thank you, Elder Bednar
Amazing!
Love Elder Bednar!!!!
I strongly suspect those that gave this brilliant talk a "thumbs-down" didn't really take the time to listen to the talk.
Wonderful doctrine!
AMEN! Thank you ❤
