  • In his keynote address at the BNC#6 conference, Clem Sunter delved into the intricate methodology of scenario planning, emphasising the importance of studying current challenges and adjusting interpretations based on evidence. He highlighted key global flags such as religious tensions, leadership dynamics, geopolitical risks, and climate change concerns. Sunter also addressed economic challenges, social polarisation driven by social media, and the looming impact of ageing populations. With a focus on South Africa, he discussed the upcoming pivotal election and the need for inclusive economic growth and infrastructure development. Sunter's insightful analysis provides a clear roadmap for navigating complex global challenges.

It's hard to take Clem Sunter seriously when he blames C02 for global warming.

The problems we have globally from a western perspective is mostly due to firstly an over eagerness to include Russia and China into world trade and a certain level of naitivty on the part of western leadership in believing that including states that had not embraced democracy into the global trade fold would result in such states accepting democracy as a winning principal. All we have achieved is to empower and finance the creation of despotic states to rise in power and importance on the world stage. Western countries have willingly engaged China with much of its mass production needs - very conveniently as we then exported out dirty polluting manufacture thus washing our hands of the sins thereof. Secondary, the drive for ever greater profits has seen the west willingly trading at a great discount with China and Russia - China producing units of manufacture far far lower cost and Russia willing to sell oil and particularly gas to Europe at very low prices - all of which have feed the bulging profits of the capitalist - but at a very high hidden future cost. That cost we are beginning to realise now - the cost to us in the west is bellicose posture from both Russia and China with both of these building up significant weaponry aimed directly westwards. Yet we do not learn from these mistakes - we continue feeding these dragons with the hope of pacifying them. In terms of Africa - one would think that post-colonial African would be more cautious in their dealings with powerful states such as China and Russia - but no - what we literally see developing is recolonisation by stealth by these states which call themselves 'friends' of Africa - but the aims are very clear - to continue stripping Africa of raw materials for 'cheap loans' - we see how that has ended up in Mali and Sri Lanka. We simply do not learn lessons in history but continue blindly following the same well trodden paths to further destruction.

Agree with most of this but can't help feeling that when dealing with people who can't walk across the street and chew gum at the same time the answer might well be a dictator with a size 11 boot!
