Edit: Coming back, it seems like people don't know the difference between a fighting game and a game with fighting in it.

ddr already tried a sabotage versus mode. doing well would send effects to the other player, like speed up/slow down, extra notes, uniform color change (prevent seeing any beats through color), and other bad things.
it was hectic and considered a lack of skill to win so now it's always just 1v1, play for the better score. very unexciting now imo. as for a Puzzle Fighter esque rhythm game where we dance till character knockout, "Legend of the Dark Witch Rudymicheal" is a game that does just that on the Switch. it gets very boring very fast, even with the more catchy songs/charts.
imo, rhythm games are fun for a blind run and to revisit every now and then but grinding perfect max combos and memorizing charts can be an absolute chore. unlike fighting games, the end game skill isn't in a complex duel of reading and responding to your opponent's actions, it's just mashing buttons at super human speeds with super human accuracy with the lengthiest/craziest muscle memory ingrained into your fingers, eyes, and ears. most of the time, this makes players break controllers unintentionally.

This is actually an awesome idea. Turning a fighting game into a rhythm game, and clashing being the forefront. One-hit kills. Also, multiple game modes, such as Versus, which is who can survive the longest, and Co-Op, which is getting the most points. Brilliant game design.

This actually sounds like a great mini game concept they could put into a fighting game, just make it a mode that can be played separately from the main game. Almost guaranteed it would be a hit as a fun party mode when players want to wind down or just try and style their way to completing the song.
