As someone from Arizona, this is without a doubt the greatest sports moment in our history. It sucks New York had to lose after 9/11, but they’ve won 27 titles, 3 in a row before that, and are usually the most hated (envied) team in baseball

Even though NY lost, the city still had its moment of triumph only a few weeks after 9/11. The first sporting event after the tragedy was a baseball game in NY between the NY Mets and Braves where Mike Piazza of the Mets hit 2 home runs including the game-winner. The mood in the stadium in wake of the tragedy mixed with the patriotism and excitement of the victory is unlike anything I've seen.

I remember that after 9/11, the first new game in New York City was the Mets vs the Braves. The Mets top player, Mick Piazza, crushed a home run late in the game to go ahead, and the Mets eventually won the game. You would think they had won the World Series by how much excitement that one, fairly meaningless win meant to many New Yorkers. Being the first game after the attacks, and having the home team Mets be the winners, was one tiny step for New Yorkers to start to move on emotionally, slowly and respectfully, of course. Later in the year, as this video shows, the Yankees were just a few outs away from winning the World Series again, and yet - well, you've seen the video. It was not to be. For me, seeing the Diamondbacks win like they did made me think that, yes, you never know what is going to happen in life. There are always tragedies, and yet there is always surprise and wonder. Life is like that. You never know what is going to happen next until it happens. Near twenty years after I saw the Twin Towers fall right in my city, I still feel it, and I still mourn for those who died (including a childhood friend of mine). But Life, as it always does, goes on. We remember, and we keep on keeping on. I don't know if this is all making sense, but these were basically my thoughts at the time. So forgive me if some of this doesn't make sense.

He did it against one of the best hitting teams in the league and the only rookie to do it, and one of only 5 pitches in the last 100 years to do it. He was also the first NL pitcher to do it and first MLB pitcher not named Roger Clemens to do it.

I've been apologizing for this for almost 2 decades now, but this was my fault. Well, me and my freshman year college roommate. You see, we were 2 New York guys and huge Yankee fans. And being 18 year old college douche bags, we wanted to gloat when the Yankees won and we also had a lot of speakers. So we wanted to blare Sinatra's New York New York. So with the internet still being very young and it still taking a while to download songs, we made the choice to start downloading in the 8th inning. We didn't realize the ramifications that choice would have. Now, we were life long sports fans. So we knew that the things fans do at home can affect outcomes of games, you know... the usual sitting in the same spot, wearing specific jerseys etc. All that stuff has a little impact on the game. But downloading a song to gloat with, we didn't know it would have this huge of an impact! WE DIDN'T KNOW we were jinxing the Yanks. We downloaded it, even quietly played it to make sure it was the correct version. WE DIDN'T KNOW AND WE ARE SORRY YANKEE FANS. We cost them the game. It's our fault. It still haunts us. We apologize to the entire city of New York.

Arizona has had close calls, but no championships since. The Cardinals their football team has made the NFC Championship Game a few times, and 1 Superbowl appearance, but losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2010. The Coyotes their NHL team made it to the Western Conference Final in 2012, but lost to the LA Kings, and they’ve never made it back. The Suns have made it to the Conference Finals as well, but had serious injuries and lost to Kobe Bryant’s Lakers squads and could never get it done. The Diamondbacks have made the postseason a few times, but have gone nowhere as the young talent they grow seem to find themselves traded before really hitting their prime. The best chance Arizona has at a title in the next decade or so is the Cardinals, as they have a good rookie QB, and they traded for an all-world talent wide receiver. But until then, this championship is all they have.

When this happened, I said at the time that Mendoza should have been pitching. But I followed it up by saying you can never fault Joe Torre from bringing in Rivera to close out the series.
Even though my team lost, objectively, this was one of the greatest series of all time. That year, given that it was 2001, was not the year I wanted the Yankee streak to end though.

Hey Luka, I hope things are going well. I know it may be to much but when you are ready to do long videos could you react to Darryl Kile Documentary: The Life & Death of Darryl Kile.
I could probably break into parts for you if it needs to be that. It’s a sad sports story but I also shows remarkable strength from a hurting team.

To answer your question about Arizona sports, the answer is the state has not seen any more success in terms of championships. That is the only World Series the diamondbacks have won and no other team has won a championship in Arizona.

I never understood the logic of a Yankee fan calling this "painful" lol...the three-peat and 4 titles in 5 years was MORE than enough. I would die a happy fan if my team did that.
