What I love about this version is in the middle interlude you can hear a separate Tabla playing, it’s actually Danny Carey’s tabla mentor. Around the mid 90s before Lateralus Danny went to India to train with Aloke Dutta. He is famous in India for his tabla playing. He thought Danny his meditative drum playing. This recording is the only time they played together live. Teacher and Student!

    • @Gideonite
      @Gideonite Před rokem +19

Also the other guitar that’s strumming is Maynard playing the Sitar, a few times he actually plays an instrument live.

Somebody on Polo's channel tried to chop Danny up to just an old white guy with drumsticks without African or Indo-beats. The rest of the world disagreed.
Danny spent his time learning and deserves every ounce of credit we can give him. As possibly the best and last living human drummer we all know, he should be protected at all costs.

I also am biased, I don't think No Quarter as a song can be bested by the alt cut of the performance from Led Zeppelin's Song Remains the Same. Half that performance stinks, but No Quarter, Rain Song & Since I've been Loving You are masterpieces.
with You Lied I even like the Peach version (original) from Justin Chancellor's first band. So underrated killer cover > killer cover from a band that already did it perfectly. It is what it is, ya dig?

The original I see as the victim striking back trying to survive, to carve out a space for itself. This one I see as the victim recognizing they have become the perpetrator, seeing the cycle and lamenting the loss in participating. In the pushing back there's always something lost. Understanding even though it was wrong, it was done with love, just fallible human love. It's haunting and beautiful and I think reflects Maynard's mindset through maturity and becoming a more whole human being.

Hey Polo. I have been enjoying your Tool reactions and followed you on your journey. I'm not sure if anyone has told you yet, but Maynard lyrics are the last piece of the puzzle. One of the reasons Tool albums take so long is the meticulous nature in which Adam, Danny and Justin write songs. They are perfectionists and it shows. Once the music is done, they send it to Maynard and he adds his lyrics afterwards. Pretty interesting as I don't know of any other bands that work that way. Keep up the good work my friend.

Long-time Tool fan here, and this is also my favorite version of the song, compared with the studio version/other lives. That crescendo man... Just top-tier chill-inducing vocals and instrumentation. Also, those drums really did it for me too. Love that tribal aesthetic.
And the pauses were no problem for me. You do rewinds, thankfully, so I'm happy. It's hard to find that perfect balance with CZcams and progressive music, but I think you've got the most reasonable amount of pauses possible. Also, most of us (reasonable people) know you'll listen to it on your own time afterward and enjoy that full, uninterrupted experience. And I'm just happy Tool is getting some more love/exposure. 😁

Easily amongst their best. This one has such an overwhelming physical effect on me. I dove deeply into it once when I was at my darkest place and it felt like going 12 rounds with Tyson: exhausting and brutal. Though it was helpful because I heard in it what I was feeling and knew I wasn’t alone

I love this channel. I know I'm late but there are a couple things about this track that are particularly special. The whole intro is built around the tiniest abstract part of the original song. Just before "never want to see that place again" is a tiny guitar lick that built the entire version of this song. No surprise as this is (pre- fear inoculum) is Adam Jones's pride and joy. ANOTHER aspect is during this performance, they featured Danny Carey's tabla instructor ALOKA DUTTA so when the bridge starts and you hear extra percussion, that is Aloka standing in with Danny to hit that atmosphere.

Everyone in UK just got tickets to Puscifer Manchester!! MJK for £38, saw Tool 3 times last tour, cost me a small fortune. Love Puscifer since Money Shot, so excited!! @Polo See if Puscifer is playing near you, would be an amazing first gig. X

    Nah, you're right.
This is the best version of this track.
This comes in a close second as my favorite Tool song right after Right in Two and Descending a close third.
Ironically, Descending will climb as I age.

We all cried. Saw that live a couple of years after his death. Eric Clapton is a true professional and got though it better than the crowd did. So sad

Music is one of the last forms of real Magick left alive these days.
That their was pure Magick caught on tape, absolutely pure energy captured.
